2020 Trinity Goals Approved Trinity’s Charge Conference on October 13 approved the goals proposed by the church council for 2020. To refresh your memory—
1. Help raise the level of biblical literacy in the congregation by completing “The Story” program. 2. Attempt to raise the level of missional interest, participation and giving by adopting a major mission project for the year. 3. Establish a Hospitality or "Atmosphere" Task Force to reflect on how Trinity can be more effective in reaching and welcoming new people. 4. Review our Leadership Structure. 5. Review our church finances and make adjustments. 6. Publish a new church directory.
If you would like to be involved in helping our church accomplish one of these goals, call the church office, talk to Pastor Steve or to a member of the church council.
2020 Church Officers and Committees The Nominating and Leadership Development Committee still has some work to do in getting a complete roster of church officers and committee members for 2020. We would hope to have most if not all the work done by next month.
Christmas Eve Services The Worship Committee discussed Christmas Eve services during their October meeting. Several possibili-ties were considered, including Trinity’s traditional 7:00/11:00 p.m. schedule.
It was decided to try a 5:00 p.m. and a 9:00 p.m. service. The 5:00 p.m. service could work well for folks who have plans for the evening, freeing up the rest of the night for plans with family and friends. A 9:00 p.m. service would enable people to have their evening plans and top off the night with a Christmas Eve service. Hopefully we’ll be able to catch some people who wouldn’t stay up for an 11:00 p.m. service.
A Christmas tradition…
A Very Chippy Christmas December 21-22 If you like Chippy you’ll love “A Very Chippy Christmas.” What is it? You’ll get a chance to find out in December. Tentative plans are for two “Very Chippy Christmas” services—one on the evening of Saturday, December 21 and one on Sunday morning, December 22nd. The service will have a number of features that are typical of Christmas worship services but with more of a Chippy-spin. (We’re trying to see if Dale, Chippy’s brother from Minneapolis, could join us!)
Help is needed! A few items would be needed: a fake fireplace with a mantle, a living room chair that swiv-els, and a small 3-4 foot Christmas tree. We’d also need greeters, special music, readers. If you’d like to help, call Pastor Steve. The best kind of recycling…
Wanted: Laundry Soap Jugs! I’ve made a lot of laundry soap over the years and I’m afraid I’m going to get rusty If I don’t make some soon. Start saving your laundry detergent jugs! Jugs need to be 96 ounce or larger. (No milk jugs or other bottles, please.) Bring your empty jugs to church and throw them in the large plastic barrel. THANKS!
Words from our Pastor…….

A break from “The Story”…
“Living Generously” We’re taking a bit of a side tour from our journey through the Bible. For the next five weeks we’ll be visiting the Donovan family, a suburban family living the American dream—nice house, good Christian friends, plans for the future and all that.
And then it happened. A whole new world opened up to Frank Donovan as he discovered the joy of Christian gener-osity and service.
Beginning on Sunday, October 27, during our morning worship services, we’ll be joining Frank and his family as they learn about generosity and the generous God who created and blesses us.
Lifetree Café—the next step
Lifetree Café as community outreach? We have a possible off-site location for an weekday evening session of Lifetree Café. It would be a comfortable setting for a “conversational café.” Promotional materials that can be placed in local newspapers are available from the Lifetree publisher. So why would we start a second session rather than just invite people to the one on Sunday morning?
Not everyone feels comfortable coming into a church building. But they may feel comfortable going to a neutral location where they are “welcome just as they are.” People may not be will-ing to come to church between worship services for Lifetree Café but might give it a try at a neutral location. The church needs to go out into the community rather than waiting for people
t o come inside.
So we’d like to have a two-month trial period where Lifetree Café would be offered in the evening at a local res-taurant. Participants could come early and eat first or even eat during Lifetree or they could just get a beverage or nothing at all.
Before we make definite plans we need some church members who are interested in working with Pastor Steve. We could use one person to lead sessions every other week or so and a couple of people to welcome people and interact with guests. Anybody interested?
November 6: “Has God Left the Building? An hour of honest conversation about the church” November 13: “Zzzzz: Practical help for getting a better night’s sleep” November 20: “Make a Difference Now: Choose to be extraordinary” November 27: “A Day in the Life of the Hidden Homeless: A mother’s struggle to keep her family together”
Searching for another venue! Our goal isn’t just to offer Lifetree Café during the Sunday school time. We’d like to take it out into the community. Maybe a breakfast session at a local restaurant? An afternoon session at another location?
Some people won’t give Lifetree a try if it’s only offered in a church. But they might try it in spiritually neutral ter-ritory. Any ideas?
Help needed: Occasionally Pastor Steve is going to be unavailable to do Lifetree Café. We need to have one or two hosts who are able and willing to fill in during vacations. Any ideas? Make sure to call!
In the hospital? Don’t make the pastor play “hide and go seek” with you when you’re in the hospital. Waiting for the pastor to find you isn’t very efficient and this approach often leads to people thinking (or saying), “Why didn’t the pastor come see me when I was in the hospital?”
There is a simple SOLUTION: Make sure you let the church office know right away when somebody is admitted to or plans to be admitted to the hospital. Don’t assume that the pastor will find out on his own or that someone else has already told him. Calling the church office makes it so much easier.

Trinity, Thank you so much for the award of my scholarship. I appreciate it so much, as it helped me pay rent and buy books I needed for class. Thank you also or the Amazon gift card. I haven’t used it yet, but I will use it for school supplies and things I need for my apartment. I am currently working at Old Navy and on October 1st, I will start as the head swim coach for Black Hawk County YMCA. I’m working both places on top of going to school full time. I very much appreciate all you have given me, as well. Thank you so much, again! ~ Sydney Keifer

Egad! E-Cigarettes
While the debate continues about whether e-cigarettes help people quit smoking, or actually serve as a gateway to start smoking, or a crutch to continue, research is accumulating about the po-tential harms of these electronic devices. Though e-cigarettes don’t contain tar and many other harmful constituents of tobacco, they do emit chemicals known or suspected to be dangerous.
Lung Damage In a case study of 2,100 teenagers (11th or 12th grad-ers) in the America Journal of Respiratory and Criti-cal Care Medicine, researchers found a strong link between e-cigs use and bronchitis/other respiratory problems, after controlling for tobacco smoking. The FDA has banned sale of e-cigs to children under 18 years of age.
Damage to Guns and Other Oral Cells In a lab study in the Journal of Cellular Physiology, researchers found that half of the cells from human gums died when exposed to e-cig vapor for just 15 minutes a day for three days. Similarly, lab study in the journal of Oncotarget found that e-cigarette va-por, especially when containing flavors, produced oxidation stress, inflammation, and DNA damage in cells—effects that could lead to various oral diseas-es.
Explosions Injuries from exploding e-cigarettes appear to be on the rise, according to the research letter in the New England Journal of Medicine. Often, serious, the in-juries include flame and chemical burns along with damage from flying debris. The main culprits are overheated batteries that rupture and burst into flames or explode, damaging hands, face, thigh, or groin ar-ea. In most cases, e-cigs explode while in use, but some times when they are in pockets.
Dan Beane of Garwin, Iowa will share his observations from his recent time in Occupied Palestine/Israel. He and his group met with Palestinian leaders and Israelis to hear their interpre-tation of the conflict, the current situation and hopes for the future of Palestinians and Israelis . He observed the struggles of Palestinians living under the Israeli occupation for over 50 years and the increasing illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. . He also observed that the Israeli’s live with fears of attacks and suicide bombings from Palestinians. He was host-ed in numerous Palestinian homes and visited many Biblical sites. This program is free and open to the public.
We’ve begun preparing for Christmas. It feels a little early to be writing about and even actively preparing for December 25
th (Heather is a huge fan of keeping the holidays in order and cele-
brating them in that order) but what is more exciting than God becoming human and walking among humans? Be sure to attend our Christmas Program on Dec 15
th at 4 pm.
Want to become an acolyte? Contact Heather. Training will occur after the Christmas Program Practice on Dec 7th.
