This year, however, was unique, given COVID- 19 conditions. An abbreviated ceremony, without a parade or guests of honor speakers, was deemed best given the limitations placed on public gatherings by social distancing guidelines. Few participants did not affect this somber moment to reflect and memorialize our fallen and departed veterans. God bless our men and women who died serving our country. Did you hear the news? The Post 28 kitchen renovation is finished and passed all required final inspections! Our last kitchen renovation was in 1945. Our “classic” dinners will continue for those wanting Chop's good-ole fashioned meatloaf or succulent Swiss Steak, while new and bolder menu items for today’s changing food tastes will be introduced. Our immediate focus is on serving tasty “carry-out/to-go” food items, given we are still closed inside the Post due to Covid-19 state government restrictions. Kyle Soentgen is our new certified kitchen manager. Kyle has a solid background in restaurant protocols and culinary trends and is diligently developing new menu ideas. Estimating a timeframe for conducting a “soft opening” is challenging but hopeful, given current state mandated restrictions on public gatherings and social distancing. Your input on meal ideas is important to us in planning budgets, advertising, and promoting our brand of meals. In addition, Dr. Chris Petras will be developing Action Plans for our Post to assist in transitioning once social gathering restrictions on restaurants and bars are loosened and we can once again serve our great members, inside the Post. Post Officers are elected to lead our organization forward using sound judgement and keeping our Post compliant with laws and regulations. With the guidance of our 5 th District Commander, Post and District Judge Advocates and the American Legion Department of Michigan, the Post 28 mail-in election of Officers is your opportunity to elect Post Officers who practice the highest levels of integrity. As I wind down this last year as Commander, I reflect on a year that has been challenging yet rewarding in several aspects. For example, completing the new Post kitchen, aligning our veterans with new programs including the world-renowned Singing Christmas Tree program, the creation and broadcasting of the documentary celebrating our Post’s first 100-years, implementing new efficient and effective technology resulting in significant revenue increases for our Post’s operations and programs, and meeting dozens of amazing Post 28 Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, Auxiliary, and Riders. Although our Post may look and feel different with COVID-19 protocols in place, the vision of Post’s founders and mission of veterans serving veterans, continues stronger than ever. I respect this Post and will be forever grateful for every opportunity to serve you. Commander Janet
