he recently found this re-markably well preserved ‘68 Plymouth Fury, all pressed out in VIP trim, for an afford-able price. A previous owner dropped a 318 c.i. V-8 in place of the original 383. By our standards, no, it’s not a muscle car. But Adam’s friends back in China are in awe of that big American V-8.under his hood. It’s all relative, right? To compete with the Ford LTD, Chevy Caprice and AMC Ambassador DPL, Plymouth marketed this Fury Belvedere C-Body as a “Very Important Plymouth”. Featur-ing full wheel covers, luxury interiors with walnut dash and door trim, thicker carpet and courtesy lighting, the VIP was a notch above the Fury I, II, and even the III. Adam’s four-door hardtop VIP features air condition-ing that, like a lot of parts under the hood, needs to be repaired. Among the items that Adam has so far cor-rected is new dual exhaust system that delivers a proper V-8 burble. To add to the muscle car look, Adam shod the car with new tires and chrome Crager wheels. Adam knows the VIP needs work, and between classes and his part-time job, he does what he can, as his budget allows. But he learned of an event called the Road-kill Zip-Tie Drags. Drag racing, swap meet, burn-out contests, car showin’, the lure was overwhelming to one who has not long been in Muscle Car Heaven. But

the event, held on January 14-15, 2017, was in Tucson, 415 miles away. Adam devoted most of his spring break replac-ing spark plugs, fan belts, setting the timing, and more. With typical youth-ful enthusiasm, he asked himself, “How hard can it be?” So, he packed more tools and spare parts than clothes into that cavernous trunk on Friday, and pointed the hood toward Tucson. He didn’t make it. Somewhere between El Centro and Yuma, that forty-nine year old water pump ate its bushing. Spitting coolant and steam, Adam coasted onto the highway shoul-der. He got a tow to

acquired this ‘68 Plymouth Fury VIP. The four-door hardtop sports it’s original Light Green Poly paint and luxurious interior. Adam hopes to repair and replace parts as his student budget allows.

FEB 2017

Clubmember Adam Ye was in middle school in Beijing, China, and loved to play video games. Just like kids here. His favorite games were about cars, and his favorite cars were muscle cars. Mopar muscle cars, to be exact. Compared to other manufacturers, Adam saw that Dodge and Plymouth didn’t play by the rules. He just loves Mopar styling, especially the ‘70 Hemi ‘Cuda. As Adam got older, he spent a lot of time on muscle car websites, hungry to learn more. His excellent English language skills allowed him to understand what was posted on these sites and soon Adam became transla-tor for the “Muscle Car Club of China” website. And he wanted to own an American muscle car. Well, it’s tough to get an American car if you’re citizen of China. Darn near impossible to get an American muscle car, as the government con-siders them dangerous and inappro-priate on the nation’s roads that are becoming increasingly choked with vehicles. Air quality is such that it’s against the law to own any car that’s fifteen or more years old. But Adam figured a way to get his American muscle car. Engineered a plan, you might say. He came to America on a student visa. Been here three years now, majoring in me-chanical engineering at the University of California San Diego. He hopes to one day be a designer of internal combustion engines. And since this is Southern Califor-nia, a kid needs wheels. Well, Adam is living on a student budget, so that Hemi ‘Cuda is a tad out of reach. But

a motel in Yuma and picked up a new water pump at a parts store. By then darkness fell and Adam turned in, determined to make the repair at first light in the motel parking lot and arrive in Tucson by late morning. Such was not to be, however, as he couldn’t get the corroded bolts to come free. So, next day, Adam rented a tow rig and got back to San Diego. Nearing home, Clubmember Kerry Kohl happened to phone him. Like Adam, Kerry’s a regular at the informal Club gather-ing on Saturday nights at the Slab. On hearing of Adam’s troubles, Kerry offered his driveway for the repair, since UCSD’s dorms don’t have such space. Clubmembers Ralph Vagnone and Joe Bourdage also pitched in with labor and advice, and the VIP was roll-ing that very day, purring like a kitten. Although disappointed that he missed the Tucson event, Adam will no doubt attend many such events closer to home. But he had his first vintage car adventure, taking on the road. More importantly, he came to know the benefit being a member of the Mopar Club. He is truly thankful for the help from these friends.

Adam not only loves Ameri-can muscle cars, he also has come to love everything about America, and what makes our country unique. Maybe after graduation Adam will go on to design our next generation of high horsepower, yet fuel and

emissions efficient muscle car engines. And maybe, one fine day Adam will have his own garage to house that Hemi ‘Cuda. After all, isn’t that just about everybody’s American dream?

Top: the wide bench seat features an armrest. Adam has added a cupholder and a bracket for his tPhone.Above: Adam replaced the exhaust system with chrome-tipped duals that have a nice V-8 burble.Left: Adam knows the engine bay needs some effiort and will spiff it up as his class schedule allows.

Right: Adam and his big Mopar ride.

Clubmember Adam Ye hails from Beijing, China and loves American muscle cars, especially Mopars. Currently in his third year at UCSD, Adam recently
