    He takes in the chief s slaves and hides them (pg 57)

    This pressures the chiefs as they are losing their slave,and thus, their power. It also can cause the other

    slaves fearing them anymore because they can run toBirch for shelter

    Birch also wants to be in charge of the tax collecting to

    MAHARAJA LELAMaharaja Lela is a man of his culture.

    He never gives up his customs and beliefs to

    that extent that he become obsessed with hisculture.

    This is the reason he came out with an idea to

    kill Birch- Birch was changing the custom(slavery, tax revenue)

    cruelty of slavery.His daughter , Mastura keep on talking

    about the unfair treatment to slaves.

    Lela challenged by Masturas word andslapped her.

    Shows that his rationality can be weakened

    by his own culture.
