CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MICROBIAL POPULATIONS PRESENT IN THE SURFACE OF THE EGGS OF FOUR ARTIFICIALLY REARED

MARINE FISH SPECIES

Vibrio salmonicida

Good quality of marine fish eggs are crucial to guarantee economic viability of hatcheries;

Fish eggs are a substrate for colonization of bacteria, jeopardizing its quality;

Evaluation of susceptibility of each fish species to different genera of bacteria

will contribute to achieve better results in hatchery productions;

OBJECTIVE

Characterize  the  bacterial  community  in  the  eggs  of  Diplodus sargus,

Diplodus vulgaris, Sparus aurata and Solea senegalensis

The total number of colony forming units (CFU’s) present in the eggs of the studied species ranged between 104 and 106 cfu.g‐1

There is a negative correlation between total CFU’s and eggs hatching rate, for all the studied species;

The  identified genera  Pseudomonas, Aeromonas,  Vibrio,  Flavobacterium and Micrococcus can  include  pathogenic  or  probiotic strains  and  are

commonly isolated from normal healthy fish egg surface.

Figure 2: Percentage of bacteria identified in eggs surface for studied species.

Figure 1:  Relation between total number of bacteria and Vibrionaceae CFU’s, eggs viability and hatchingrate.

There is a negative Pearson correlation (‐0,779) between total number of Cfu´sand eggs hatching rate of all the studied species.

Diferences between eggs colonization in D.  sargus (Vibrio and Aeromonas salmonicida) and theother studied species (mainly Flavobacterium spp.)   (Fig. 2). Micrococcus species appeared  in   D. vulgaris and  S.  senegalensis eggs.  Important  fish  pathogens,  such  as  Yersinia ruckeri were identified in S. aurata eggs.

D. sargus(Jan, 21.0 °C)

D. vulgaris(Dec. , 18.1 °C)

S. aurata(Dec. , 15.1 °C)

S. senegalensis(Dec. , 18.5°C)

Among  the  species  analyzed,  D.  vulgaris present  the  highest  total  number  of bacteria  (Tryptic soy agar  ‐ TSA) and Vibrionaceae (Thiosulfate citrate bile  salts sucrose agar ‐ TCBS) and S. senegalensis present the lowest (Fig.1).
