What is a cell?

• A cell is the smallest unit of all living organisms.

• An organism is something that is living• All organisms are made up of cells.

Cell theory

• Has three basic characteristics:1. All organisms are made up of one or more

cell.2. The cell is the basic unit of all organisms3. All cells come from existing cells.

The cell theory is the fundamental to the study of organism, heredity, and evolution.

organisms

• One celled organism are called unicellular• Ex. Amoeba• Multicellular organisms are made up of more

than one cell. Ex. Plant

• Single celled organisms must carry out all the functions for life within that cell.

• Multicellular organisms have specialized functions for cells.

Functions for life

• Eat,• Reproduce,• Give off waste• respiration

Parts common in all cells

• Cell membrane – acts as a barrier between inside of a cell and the cell’s environment.

• Cytoplasm – include the fluid and all of the cell’s organelles.

• DNA- is genetic material provides instruction for cell’s function.

• Organelles – small body in a cell’s cytoplasm performs specialized functions.

Two Types of Cells

• Prokaryotic – single cell organism does not have a nucleus. – Contain ribosomes that do not have a membrane.– Some have flagella to help them move

• Eukaryotic – organism made up of cells containing DNA in its nucleus. – Contain membrane bound organelles aw well as

ribosomes.
