E - BULLETIN UPDATE #3 November 2017 November has been yet another busy and engaging month at Cedarwood P.S. We thank the community mem- bers who were able to join us to observe one of our two Remembrance Day assemblies. Our staff and stu- dents did a tremendous job of organizing a very meaningful, reflective, and respectful observance of this im- portant and solemn occasion. We thank the many staff and students who dedicated their own time and efforts to help offer this moving, learning experience for our school community. We also thank our Grade 8 classes and their teachers for planning and organizing the Student Success Assemblies for October. The assemblies were upbeat and fun, and helped us to learn further about the character trait of responsibility, and also cele- brated the students who show great responsibility on a daily basis! Our students also continued to participate in a variety of fun activities that are designed to engage students and get them active and involved in school-life. Some of the activities include(d) the Km-Club, the C.B.A. (Cedarwood Basketball Association), the C.F.L. (Cedarwood Football League), two volleyball teams, the Forest of Reading Book Clubs, our Eco-Team, our Student Council Change Makers, and our Healthy Schools Team! There are also a variety of other opportunities being offered that may be shared in a future E-Bulletin. Our community and staff generously donated over 840 non-perishable food items to the local food bank, through our We Scare Hunger Campaign’, organized by our We Day committee. There is currently a Movember Stache fundraiser happening, as the Student Council Change Makers raise awareness and funds for a variety of Mens related health and mental health issues. As always, we are so appreciative of our school community for being so supportive of these important social initiatives! November 5 th to 11 th was Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario. During the week, we promoted awareness to our students and staff about the history and importance of treaties and treaty relationships, through a display in the front foyer, daily announcements, and in-class discussions and activities. As a school community, we continue to learn about, and value, the histories, cultures, perspectives, and contributions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples in Canada. It has also been Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week this week, and we have been trying to intentionally address issues of bullying and the impact it has on the academic and socio-emotional well-being of students, and on the overall school climate. Students received their Progress Reports on Wednesday, November 22 nd and the parent/teacher/student inter- views and conferences will be held, in most cases, on the evening of Thursday, November 23 rd and during the morning of Friday, November 24 th . These interviews/conferences will be a great opportunity to discuss what your child(ren) is/are doing well and what potential next steps and goals can be set as the first term progress- es. We are requesting that our students be part of the interview process, as we know that involving them helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page as we move forward. We are looking forward to meeting with our students and families over the next few days! Finally, back by popular demand, we will be sending home information in the near future related to the up- coming Special Electives that we offer each year in February. We have planned a variety of experiences that we hope that our students will really enjoy! As always, we are looking forward to continuing to work closely and collaboratively with our families to support our amazing students as the school year progresses! 399 Elson Street, Markham, ON L3S 4R8 (905) 294-5756 Principal: Paul Battler Vice Principal: Araby Porter Superintendent: Camille Logan (905) 940-7800 Trustee: Juanita Nathan (905) 4712553 School Website: http://www.cedarwood.ps.yrdsb.ca School Email: [email protected] Upcoming November Highights… November 23 in evening/24 in morning—Parent /Teacher/ Student Interviews for most classes November 27 & 29-Dental Screening November 30-COURAGE Assemblies Staff and students are en- couraged to Rethink their actions before disposing of an item. Avoid food and beverages that are high in added salt and/or sugar and low in nutrients.

Do not serve foods with artificial trans fat . Artificial trans fat is harmful to the health of children and youth. Use the nutrition label (i.e., Nutrition Facts Table and ingredient list) on food packages to help avoid foods with artificial trans fat. Visit Health Canada’s website on understanding food labels for more information about nutrition labelling.

Encourage healthy eating practices by giving children and youth enough time to eat (at least 20 minutes) when possible. Promote positive social skills by providing a pleasant eating environment.

Encourage children and youth to help plan menus and choose foods and help with food preparation. Offer appealing food choices that are inclu-sive and reflect the faiths and cultures of the children.

Respect that children and youths’ appetites can change for a variety of reasons. Children are encouraged to listen to their hunger and fullness cues. If a child is full but has not finished his/her food, do not put pressure on the child to eat more. Likewise, do not withhold food from a child based on body size. Food should not be used as a reward for good behaviour or withheld for inappropriate behaviour.

Children and youth are easily influenced by casual comments about weight, body size and calories. Show a positive attitude for healthy eating and nutrition. Eating well gives you energy and improves your health.

Connect with your local public health unit for more information about nutrition and food safety.

SOME STUDENT NUTRITION GUIDELINES AND TIPS... Try different flavours, textures, and colour combinations of food, and offer seasonal food items when possible.
