SFA Web Site:

The winter DROP has been posted to the National Web Site. http://

www.specialforcesassociation.org/drop. Please go to the web site and open the

DROP. I found that it was easy to view and read and print any article I wanted

to save. The DROP is moving forward to being posted to the web site full

time. This move has been taken because of the increasing printing and postage

costs. Like many other things today this is a necessary step in our economy.

Yes, it means change, but we need to see that some changes are necessary and

needed. Let us know if you are having trouble viewing the DROP of the web

site. We can then relay this information to National. They will not make

changes if they do not know there is a problem.

Misinformation ? :

In the latest issue of the Museum Musings, Bill Palmer published that in the

spring of 2014 the JFK Special Warfare Museum will be no longer. He states “

the present US Army John F Kennedy Special Warfare Museum will be taken

down to make room for the new multimillion dollar Special Warfare Center

and School main campus facilities which are being constructed in the area. “ He

goes on to say “the Army has no plans to move or incorporate our present

Museum into the new facilities.” The truth is, as you will read on page 7, there

are plans for a new Museum they just haven’t been finalized. Please read Major

General Bennet Sacolick’s response to the article written by Mr. Palmer on

page 7. I’m sure we will hear more about this at the June National SFA Con-

vention.

be able to ensure the correct quantity of food will be available. This year is a change from the last year, so

came and see what’s new. Also a new start time of 6:30pm. It was felt that since the Formal is on a Friday it

needed to be started one hour later to give everyone time to get home from work. Guest speaker will be

Mr. Garry Reid, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict.

We are also planning another special event for the evening, But you will have to attend to find out what it is.

Let’s just say it is going to be a lot of fun and you won’t want to miss it.

Formal. It’s not to late to purchase raffle tickets. The tickets are $5 each payable to SFA 29. Please mail

SFA Convention:

June 11 thru 17 are the dates for this years SFA National Convention. This will be the 60th anniversary of

Special Forces so the location of the National Convention will be Fayetteville North Carolina (Ft Bragg).

Refer to the latest DROP issues for details. Chapter 29 will have a table in the vendors room to raise money

for the scholarship fund and future Nam Dong Library expenses. This being the 60th anniversary will mean

Hotel/Motel rooms will be scooped up quickly. Many Hotels in the area are already sold out, so if you are

planning on going, make your room reservation first. Call the Hotels directly, for room reservations. They

sometimes will be holding a block of rooms or have a wait list for this event that the 1-800 numbers do not

know about. If plans change most hotels/motels allow cancelation if you cancel 48hours in advance of check

in. The convention is a great chance to get first hand information about all the drama that’s been going on via

the e-mails many of us have been receiving. It’s also a chance to visit some of your old haunts from days gone

by. Camp Mackall, Airborne Museum, Local Watering Hole, Group Friends etc. At this time it appears 3

chapter members will be attending, Chapter Secretary Gail Merrill and two other chapter members.

Update from ECHOES (Retiree Pay Dates Have Changed!)

Pay days for military retirees and those who receive portions of retired pay, changed in September and De-

cember when the Defense Finance and Accounting Service changed its schedule to comply with the 2011 Na-

tional Defense Authorization Act. The 2011 NDAA requires military retiree pay to be processed on the first

day of the month. When that day falls on a weekend of national holiday the pay date is moved to the previ-

ous business day.

Payments normally scheduled for October 3rd, 2011 were issued on September 30th 2011 and payments

scheduled for January 3rd 2012 were issued on December 30, 2011. That means you received 13 payments

in 2011 not 12 payments. For some that will effect their tax returns. Just remember if the first falls on a

weekend or federal holiday you will get paid the business day before the first. This change affects regular re-

tired pay, concurrent retirement and disability pay, combat related special compensation, retiree allotments,

garnishments and court ordered former spouse and child support payments. This does not affect annuity

payments. For questions or to make changes in withholdings Form w-4 or w-4p or form DD 2866 please go

to www.dfas.mil/retiredmilitary/forms.html and should be mailed or faxed to 1-800-469-6559 Defense Fi-

nance and Accounting Service U.S. Military Retired Pay PO Box 7130 London KY 40742-7130. Changes can

take up to 30 days to process. Reprint from ECHOES Jan-Apr 2012.

4 Things you might not have known about your Cell Phone:

For all the folks with cell phones. There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST (Emergency)

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your

mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to es-

tablish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is

locked. Try it out.

SECOND (Hidden Battery Power)

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with

this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you

charge your cell phone next time.

THIRD (How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?)

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone: *#06# .

A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it

somewhere safe.

If your phone is stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able

to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You

probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If

everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

FOURTH (Free Directory Service for Cells)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have

to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a

problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial:

(800)FREE411 or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone

now. This is sponsored by McDonalds.

Le and Chris:

Le, our translator on the trip to Laos, Viet-

nam and Cambodia was married on January

1, 2012 to Chris (He is from New Zea-

land). After touring Vietnam with Chris

and his family for about a month, they are

settling into married life. Chris had to re-

turn to New Zealand on business, but will

return to Vietnam to be with his bride

soon. They plan to move to New Zealand

as soon possible.

DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY

UNITED STATES ARMY JOHN F. KENNEDY SPECIAL WARFARE CENTER AND SCHOOL

3004 ARDENNES STREET, STOP A

FORT BRAGG, NORTH CAROLINA 28310-9610

Office of the Commanding General

Dear Museum Association Members,

I was deeply troubled by the January 2012 newsletter, which compelled me to write and address the rumors

circulating about the JFK Special Warfare Museum. To begin, preserving our museum and its artifacts is a

principle concern on mine and all the men and women who comprise the Special Warfare Center and School.

Indeed, our artifacts remind us of the past, offering a physical representation of our heritage. What’s more,

they distinguish who we are today, and, as such, maintaining the museum is of critical importance to the com-

mand.

Currently, our museum is housed in an 1,800-square-feet facility, which only holds approximately 20 percent

of our artifacts. I view this as a disservice not only to the members of our regiments who have donated impor-

tant pieces of our collective history, but also to the public and our students who are prevented from fully en-

joying the many displays the JFK Special Warfare Museum could offer. For this reason, we must have a new

museum – one that can appropriately and sufficiently display our history; and one in which every member of

our three regiments can take great pride.

Creating a state-of-the-art museum is exactly what we intend to do: My command is in the process of develop-

ing a multi-course plan to shepherd the museum’s relocation, revitalization and expansion. To that end, I have

assigned a field-grade officer to act as a liaison and to serve as lead planner on the museum project. I anticipate

presenting all plans under discussion at an upcoming association meeting (or sooner if possible), and, at that

time, I would welcome any feedback or ideas you may have about this exciting initiative.

In the meantime, we remain focused on raising awareness as to the importance of the museum by assigning

additional service members to supplement the outstanding work of the museum staff. These service members

with the support of association volunteers, for example, have built display cases, arranged artifacts and pro-

vided overall area beautification on museum grounds. You can be confident my command will continue to

stress the importance of becoming more familiar with our history by incorporating a museum tour in all of our

student training schedules.

As the museum revitalization initiative unfolds, honoring our history and preserving our artifacts will guide the

process. I look forward to being a part of this exciting next chapter in the USA JFK Special Warfare Center

and School’s history.

Respectfully,

Major General Bennet Sacolick
