By contract between Timberview High School, the Mansfield Independent School District, and the United States Air Force, cadets enrolled in the AFJROTC program will wear the Air Force uniform at least one complete school day each week, and keep hair styles and personal grooming within established Air Force Standards. These are mandatory procedures which I encourage you to follow in order to stay enrolled in the JROTC program. In addition to Air Force standards, each provision of this cadet guide was written in consideration of the academic and development objectives of Mansfield Timberview High School.

The AFJROTC curriculum includes aerospace science academics, leadership instruction and training, and physical exercise/training. Cadet Officers and Noncommissioned Officers learn leadership and management skills by organizing and directing the TX-20053 AFJROTC Group. Our mission is simply to build better and more productive citizens for America. Enrollment in the corps in no way obligates the cadet for military service.

The standards in this guide support the leadership and personal development objectives of the AFJROTC program and if taken in the spirit, in which they are intended, will provide the foundation for a pleasant and profitable educational experience. It contains policy guidance, requirements, and rules of conduct for you, an AFJROTC cadet at Mansfield Timberview High School! I recommend you study this guide thoroughly. You will be held responsible for its contents during daily activities and on examinations.

We wish you success and personal satisfaction as a member of the Mansfield Timberview High School “Wolf” Group!

MISSION AND VALUES OF TX-20053

The success of Detachment TX-20053 depends on the application of the Air Force core values:

Integrity First

Service before Self

Excellence in all We Do.”

In addition, the cadets have adopted core values of “Integrity, Respect, and Leadership” to guide them.

Integrity is the first and most important value. It is defined as “knowing what’s right and doing the right thing,” even when no one is watching. Bad decisions and mistakes are part of being a human, but lying, cheating, and stealing demonstrate bad character and a lack of personal responsibility and respect for others.

Respect is the appreciation for others and the property of others. It speaks to treating those around us with respect and working hard to earn the respect of our teachers, parents, and peers.

Leadership is the commitment to accept responsibility for those in the corps subordinate to us. It is also the desire to conduct ourselves in such a manner that elevates us to leadership status in the eyes of those around us. .

2

HONOR CODE

To make the core values more meaningful, cadets are expected to live by the honor code:

“We will not lie, cheat or steal, nor will we tolerate that behavior

from anyone in our corps.”

As a cadet, it is imperative to set the example for others to follow. Your character must be above reproach and strong enough to withstand conflicting situations. Your words and actions must be above question because others will not follow someone they don't trust. Doing what is right is not always easy. Sometimes you have to pay a high price for having the courage to stand by your convictions. You, the cadet, must believe in yourself and what is right. Being a leader involves having to make tough decisions and carrying them out for the benefit of the organization without regard for personal gain.

The Cadet Honor Code is a vehicle to guide you along the path of successful leadership and followership. If you tolerate a violation, you are as guilty as the one who commits the offense. Toleration in this society will come easy, and throughout life you will face temptation and urges that will encourage you to abandon your ideals. Some people have no problem with matters of conscience, because they choose not to be ethical. However, in winning at all costs, the advantages are short lived and the costs high.

Make the honor code and personal integrity part of your life. Because you are a cadet, you will be given responsibility, and you will be expected to perform. The Cadet Honor Code will prepare you for the rigors of life and leadership, and will play a vital role in the never-ending development of your character. It is a minimum standard from which a cadet can build and evaluate his/her moral character throughout the years.

Strict adherence to "the code" is required by each and every cadet at all times and in all situations. Personal integrity is a common thread that links cadets of the past, present, and future. Integrity, as embedded in the Cadet Honor Code, will enable you and others to accomplish the tremendous tasks you are asked to do as you meet the challenges of life.

4

Page 13: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

CHAPTER THREE

CONDUCT AND MILITARY COURTESY

1. General:

a. TO PASS THIS COURSE, YOU MUST CORRECTLY WEAR THE UNIFORM WHEN DIRECTED TO DO SO. Normally this will be once a week on Wednesday. However, there may be times when we will be called upon to wear it more often or on a different day than regularly scheduled.

b. All cadets are expected to observe correct military conduct at all times. This will reflect credit upon themselves, their parents, fellow cadets, Timberview High School, and the U.S. Air Force.

c. Cadets will abide by the rules and regulations of the Aerospace Science Department and will accept responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of Air Force uniforms, textbooks, and other equipment.

2. Respect for authority:

a. Cadets will respectfully follow all instructions, directives, and orders given by the SASI/ ASI. b. Administrators, faculty, and staff will be treated with the same respect as JROTC instructors. c. School rules are to be strictly adhered to at all times while at school or school sponsored activities.d. Cadet Officers and NCOs represent the SASI and ASI, while performing certain duties directly related

to the AFJROTC program. They can and will give instructions and directives relative to their duties. These directions must be respectfully followed without undue questioning, except where clarity is an issue.

e. The SASI is a Commissioned Officer, he will be addressed as “Sir” or “ (rank) ” in all conversations.f. The ASI is a Noncommissioned Officer. He will be addressed as “Sergeant” or “Sir” in all

conversations.g. Cadets must demonstrate the proper respect for all authority at all times. Criticism, sarcasm, and

challenges to authority will not be tolerated.

3. Punctuality:

Cadets must be in classes, meetings, formations, and other AFJROTC activities on time. Those who are tardy disrupt student instruction time and penalize those who are on time and ready to learn. Tardys to

5

class will be handled in accordance with the Timberview student handbook as well as the established AFJROTC discipline and demerit procedures and program.

4. Commitment:

Commitment is very important to the success of the program. For most events, a sign up list will be used to ensure participation. After a cadet has signed up it is imperative that they show up for the event unless they have a valid excuse, i.e. family emergency, doctor’s note. If a cadet signs up for an event and fails to show, they may face a cadet disciplinary board which could result in him/her losing their rank or position in the corps. If unexcused, the absence may also affect their semester grades.

5. Classroom Procedures:

a. Class begins when the tardy bell sounds. At that time students should be standing at “parade rest”, next to their desks ready for the report to be taken. Any student who is not at his/her desk will be counted either absent or tardy, and the appropriate report made to the school office. If you are tardy, proceed immediately to the office to receive a tardy slip. You will not be allowed into class without this documentation.

b. Upon entering the classroom. Drop off back packs, purses, etc. under your desk or at the side of the room, get notebook/paper and place it on your desk with writing utensil and then take the position of “parade rest”. When the tardy bell sounds, the flight commander or flight sergeant will close the classroom door and assume his/her position at “attention” and call the flight (class) to “attention”. All students will immediately assume the position of “attention”, without talking or undue movement.

c. The squadron/flight commander/sergeant will command, “Elements report”. Each element leader, in sequence, will render a salute and report the status of his/her element. For example, “Element one, all present or accounted for, Sir/Sergeant.”, “Element two, one missing, Sir/Sergeant.”

d. When all elements have reported, the flight commander/sergeant will face the instructor, salute, and report, “____ Flight all present or accounted for Sir/Sergeant.”

e. The instructor will return the salute and command the flight commander/sergeant to continue. The flight commander/sergeant will face the flag and lead the class in the Pledge of Allegiance. Cadets will all remain at attention and pivot to face the flag. If in uniform, the pledge will be recited at the position of attention. When in civilian clothes, cadets will remain at attention, but place their right hand over their heart for the pledge. In all cases, proper respect will be given to our National and State flags!

f. At the conclusion of the Pledge of Allegiance, the flight commander/sergeant will turn to the flight and command, “seats.” At this point the flight commander/sergeant will open the door to admit any tardy students. Tardy students will report to the instructor, “ Cadet ____________ reporting, permission to join class.”

g. After permission is granted, the cadet will take his seat and begin class.

6

b. Cell Phones/iPods/IPads: –There will be absolutely no tolerance for using a Cell Phone/iPod or any other gaming device (with the exception of District provided IPads) in the classroom, or while participating in drill or wellness training, unless approved by the SASI/ASI. Any use of these devices will result in that item being taken up immediately and turned into the students Assistant Principal in accordance with school policy. IPads when brought to class will remain face down on desk and use will be restricted until direction is given from the classroom instructor.

c. No sleeping will be permitted in class. If necessary quietly get up, move to the rear of the classroom, and stand at “parade rest” to stay awake. You will not lay your head on the desk.

d. Cadets will display proper courtesy and manners toward the instructors and other cadets at all times. Interrupting or talking at inappropriate times is a sign of disrespect.

e. Profanity, vulgar language, or disruptive comments will not be tolerated.

f. Stay in your seats during class unless given permission by the SASI/ASI. Sharpen pencils before class. Hold all trash until dismissed at the end of class.

g. The flight commander is the cadet “in charge” anytime the SASI/ASI is not in the room. He/She is responsible for making sure all classroom rules are observed.

h. “Cutting down” or making fun of fellow cadets will not be tolerated. Hazing in any form, meaning physical or emotional harassment, will result in immediate disciplinary action.

7. Class dismissal:

a. Class will be dismissed only after the bell rings, indicating the end of the block.

b. The instructor will tell the flight commander/sergeant to call the flight to attention. He/she will command, “Flight, attention.”

c. The instructor will tell the flight commander/sergeant to dismiss the flight. He/she will command, “Column of files from the right/left.”

d. Only after the flight has been dismissed will the cadets exit the classroom and they will do so in an orderly manner.

8. Departing class during instructional time :

a. No student will be allowed to leave class, except for illness, without a completed hall pass. If a student must leave the class for illness, he/she will raise his hand and announce, “Sir or Sergeant, I have an emergency.”

7

Page 16: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

b. The student will leave the class as quietly as possible and proceed directly to the rest room. After his/her restroom break, he/she will return quietly to class. If the emergency persists, he/she will ask permission to proceed to the nurse’s office or to the school office to call home for assistance.

9. Hazing and Physical Discipline:

Any form of hazing, whether verbal or physical, will not be tolerated within AFJROTC or any AFJROTC activity. In addition, requiring other cadets, individually or as a group, to perform any physical action as a reprimand, punishment or for failure to perform will also not be tolerated. Cadets will not condone or encourage any type of hazing or initiation rituals.

Examples of prohibited physical activities include, but are not limited to: push-ups, running laps, or any inappropriate physical contact such as shoving, pulling or grabbing.

Any form of physical abuse, teasing, public rebuke or any attempt to otherwise humiliate a cadet is prohibited.

This prohibition is applicable to all AFJROTC activities, and includes instructors, cadets and any personnel involved with or participating in and AFJROTC unit or activity.

Unauthorized Clubs. No unit may encourage, facilitate, or otherwise condone secret societies or private clubs as part of the AFJROTC program

10 . Saluting:

The salute, in its various forms, is considered a military greeting the world over. In many countries, as in the United States, it is a symbol of respect. Military personnel regard the salute as a respectful greeting between members. It is one of the oldest traditions binding military people together.

a. Rules: It is important that you learn the following rules of saluting:

1. Cadets in uniform will salute all cadet officers of higher grades, officers of the United States Armed Forces, and the SASI. The ASI will only be saluted in “reporting” situations. Cadets not in uniform are encouraged to salute these personnel anytime they meet.

2. A cadet of junior grade will salute a cadet officer of senior grade first, and will hold the salute until it is properly returned or otherwise acknowledged.

8

Page 17: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

3. When a cadet in uniform sees the American Flag being raised on any flagpole, he/she will assume the position of attention, render the hand salute, and hold it until the flag reaches the top of the flagpole. When the flag is being lowered, the salute will be held until the flag reaches the hands of the individuals lowering the flag.

4. When a cadet is late for squadron, flight, or element formation, he/she will approach the person in charge when the formation is at a halt. He/she will salute and request permission to fall in. This also applies to flag raising/lowering ceremonies.

5. Cadet officers and cadet non-commissioned officers will correct saluting violations in a helpful manner on the spot. A cadet should not be placed in a degrading or embarrassing situation by public reprimand for failure to salute. Be civil and use common sense at all times. All cadets are expected to accept these corrections without resentment.

6. Cases of disrespect, insolence, insubordination, or refusal to comply with corrective instructions will be reported to the SASI/ASI immediately.

b. Hand Salute. This command is used for training purposes only. The command is Hand, SALUTE, and it is performed in two counts. On the command SALUTE, the individual raises the right hand smartly in the most direct manner while at the same time extending and joining the fingers. Keep the palm flat and facing the body. Place the thumb along the forefingers, keeping the palm flat and forming a straight line between the fingertips and elbows. Tilt the palm slightly toward the face. Hold the upper arm horizontal, slightly forward of the body and parallel to the ground. Ensure the tip of the middle finger touches the right front corner of the headdress. If wearing a hat without a bill, ensure the middle finger touches the outside corner of the right eyebrow or the front corner of glasses. The rest of the body will remain at the position of attention. This is count one of the movement. To complete count two of the movement, bring the arm smoothly and smartly downward, retracing the path used to raise the arm. Cup the hand as it passes the waist, and return to the position of attention.

c. Saluting Areas: The mandatory saluting areas at Timberview High School are:

1. Outside: When outdoors on campus (common sense—if you can see the sky above you—salute.) This includes loading/unloading school buses.

2. Inside:

(1) When reporting to the SASI/ASI

(2) When reporting late to class

(3) When reporting to the President of the Cadet Evaluation Board

(4) When being recognized at awards ceremonies

Note: When reporting to the SASI/ASI and to the cadet board president, the cadet will come to attention, salute and say, “Sir/Ma’am, Cadet (grade) Last Name, reports as ordered.” When reporting late to class, the cadet will come to attention, salute, and say, “Sir/Ma’am, Cadet (grade) Last Name, request permission to join the flight.” Hold the salute until it is returned or the salute is acknowledged.

CADET UNIFORM RESPONSIBILITIES

9

Page 18: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

1. Cadets are reminded that the Air Force uniform that has been issued is United States Government property. All of your uniform and equipment items (with the exception of shoes, socks, ribbons, medals, and nametags) are loaned to them.

2. At the time the cadet is issued uniform and equipment items, he/she will be required to sign a custody receipt form and place his/her initials on each line for individual items issued. This action makes the cadet responsible for all uniform and equipment items. Negligence regarding the maintenance of the uniform will not be tolerated. Loss or damage to uniform items due to negligence will result in full payment to the Air Force. The cost will be the full replacement cost at the time the damaged item is turned in.

3. One complete uniform with all accessories and insignia will be issued to each cadet. Cadets need to understand that uniform items are reissued each year and therefore it is imperative that the uniform be dry-cleaned and returned or paid for before the end of the school year. In agreement with the school, report cards will not be released, certificate of training/completion will not be awarded, and diplomas will be held until all items and equipment have been turned-in, cleaned, in serviceable condition, and/or paid for. School records will not be forwarded to the new school for students who transfer during or after the school year unless all uniforms items are turned in.

4. It is imperative that every cadet wears there uniform on the designated day. If there is a problem with the uniform i.e. holes, to small, etc, let one of the instructors know prior to the uniform day. Once a cadet has notified the instructor about the problem, bring it in so that the proper adjustments can be made. If a cadet waits till the uniform day to tell an instructor that his/her uniform is in disrepair, that cadet will receive a zero for that day’s uniform grade. If a cadet continually disregards wearing the uniform other actions will be taken to include failure of the class and disenrollment.

5. To preclude unnecessary expenses to the cadet, delay grades or diplomas, and to provide for efficient turn-in of uniforms and equipment, the following is suggested:

a. Never leave uniform items in unlocked lockers or unattended at any time.b. Do not lend uniform items or equipment to anyone, including cadets.c. Do not allow anyone, other than a parent or guardian, to turn in your uniform or equipment items.d. Be alert for uniform or equipment items left or misplaced by a fellow cadet. Turn in any items you find

to the SASI or ASI. e. If you become aware of missing uniform or equipment items, immediately inform the SASI/ASI. f. It is important that you wear the uniform proudly. Any items that have become worn or unserviceable

should be turned in to the SASI or ASI as soon as possible. If the unserviceable condition is due to fair wear and tear, the item will be replaced at no cost to the cadet.

g. It is just as important that uniform items fit correctly. Any items that do not fit correctly should be exchanged. The SASI or ASI has final authority regarding proper fit.

h. Items are not to be altered except with the prior approval of the SASI/ASI.

6. When a cadet drops, dis-enrolls, or leaves the program or school for any reason, he/she will be required to turn in all issued uniforms and insignia (excluding socks, PT gear, nametag and ribbons). Uniforms are issued in a clean condition; therefore, they must be turned in clean (cleaners bag and receipt required). If the uniforms are turned in dirty, a $20.00 cleaning fee will be charged. At the end of the school year, all uniform items must be dry-cleaned, turned in and accounted for.

CHAPTER FIVE

CERTIFICATES OF TRAINING AND COMPLETION

10

Page 19: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

There are two types of certificates that may be awarded for AFJROTC cadets, Certificate of Completion, and Certificate of Training.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION: This certificate is presented to cadets in good standing who complete three full years of the AFJROTC program. Cadets must have this certificate in their possession upon enrolling in the senior AFROTC program or upon enlistment in the armed forces to gain the benefits offered by successful completion of the AFJROTC program.

1. With the certificate of completion, the cadet may be excused from one year of the General Military Course (GMC) of the senior program. This privilege must be arranged with the Professor of Aerospace Studies (PAS) at the time of enrollment in a college or university.

2 The SASI is the awarding authority of the certificate. He also determines if the cadet receiving the certificate is deserving of recommendation for enlistment in the grade of E-3 in the military services. The SASI, by award of the certificate and his signature, recommends the cadet for enlistment in the grade of E-3.

3. If the cadet should enlist in the armed forces, a positive recommendation, signified by the certificate, will entitle him or her, with acceptance by the particular branch of Service, to promotion to the grade of E-3.

CERTIFICATE OF TRAINING: This certificate is presented to cadets in good standing upon completion of two years in the AFJROTC program and either graduation from Timberview High School or transfer to another school.

With the certificate of training the cadet may be excused from one academic term (semester or quarter) of General Military Course (GMC) of the senior AFROTC program. This privilege, again, must be arranged with the PAS at the time of enrollment in the college or university.

OTHER CRITERIA:

1. These certificates are not awarded automatically based solely on academic performance. Consideration is given to total performance and achievement as a member of the cadet corps.

2. It is possible to complete the course for academic credit but not be considered to have met the requirements for these recommendations.

3. Final determination for awarding either certificate is made by the SASI, the ASI, and the Timberview High School Principal.

CHAPTER SIX

DISCIPLINARY SYSTEM, MERIT AND DEMERIT SYSTEM

CADET DISCIPLINARY SYSTEM:

The Cadet Disciplinary System fulfills four basic purposes:

To reward exceptional performance or achievement To correct displays of disrespect or integrity violations To measure performance of individual cadets To help develop flight unity, esprit de corps , and measure overall flight performance

1. MERIT POINTS

Merits are awarded for demonstrated exceptional effort in accomplishing the mission of the cadet corps such as participating in special events outside of normal day to day activities. The total points at the end of the grading period will be used in determining conduct grade, and will be averaged into the Military Leadership portion of the total grade. These points may be added to the average points earned for academics, drill, participation, and uniform wear. A cadet who consistently earns merit points may be considered for early promotion to the next higher rank with the concurrence of the SASI/ASI.

2. DEMERIT POINTS

Demerits can be given for violations or deficiencies associated with the regulations in the Cadet Guide or procedures taught in the AFJROTC program. It must be recognized that excessive demerits demonstrate a lack of willingness to adapt to the “Wolf” Group AFJROTC values and may serve as grounds for failure, demotion, and possible dismissal from the program. If a cadet earns more than five demerits during any academic period, he/she may become ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities to include drill, Color Guard, competitions, and field trips with the concurrence of the SASI/ASI. Excessive demerits may result in a Cadet Evaluation Board to determine additional disciplinary action Each cadet is required to report demerits to the SASI or ASI within one school day of the offense. Failure to do so will result in more demerits.

3. ADMINISTERING MERITS/DEMERITS

All merit or demerit points must be approved by the SASI or ASI. Cadet Officers and NCOs have authority to recommend merit/demerits, but must follow the chain of command in order to have them administered. The Group Commander, or in his/her absence the Squadron Commander, must approve all merit/demerit suggestions before they are presented to the SASI or ASI.

4. ADDITIONAL PUNITIVE MEASURES

Cadets who do not show improvement in their behavior by positive response to the cadet demerit system will face traditional school disciplinary actions. These will include, but are not limited to: parental notification, in-school suspension, suspension, and/or dismissal from JROTC.

12

CHAPTER SEVEN

CADET GROUP OPERATIONAL AND FUNCTIONAL AREAS

The Timberview Cadet Group offers many opportunities in their Group Operational and Functional areas: To fill a job, put in an application and provide it to the Group Commander, Deputy Commander, or Liaison. The upper staff should fill Group Positions early in the school year. There are opportunities in such areas as

Logistics and Supply: (helping out in the supply room and making sure the right equipment gets to the right function)

Support: (making sure cadets are getting what they need out of the program) Public Affairs: taking pictures at all events and during select classes for end-of-year

video, working with school year book staff, etc.) Many other opportunities are listed in the Unit Manning Document located on the school

website and in the classroom, check them out! We need leaders!

PROMOTION AND DEMOTION POLICY

It is the policy of TX-20053 to afford all cadets the opportunity to advance to the highest rank to which they aspire, within the confines of the Unit Manning Document (UMD).

Promotions at Timberview High School AFJROTC are based on academic performance, leadership abilities, and demonstrated qualities that clearly indicate the ability to assume a position of increased responsibility. Integrity and respect must be demonstrated both in and out of JROTC class, as well as in relations with staff, faculty, and peers. Cadets who adhere to corps and school guidelines, serve as examples to others, and who regularly take part in corps activities, such as Color Guard, Drill Team, etc, demonstrate the greatest potential for advancement. In addition, cadets who desire to reach the level of Corps Commander and/or Corps Staff Officer, including Squadron Commander, should complete at least one session of Summer Leadership School, or US Army/ US Air Force Basic Military Training prior to promotion. In order for cadets to attain and hold top leadership positions, they must complete Aerospace Science with at least a "B" and maintain a "C" average in their overall academic studies. Promotions must be earned, they are not automatic!

The promotion system is patterned after that of the active duty Air Force and will conform to guidance provided by Headquarters AFJROTC. The following provisions apply:

There are two kinds of grade (rank) a cadet may hold:

Permanent Grade : This grade is awarded based on years of satisfactory service in the AFJROTC. The permanent grade authorized for 1st year cadets is Cadet Airman Basic/Cadet Airman; 2nd year cadets are authorized Cadet Airman First Class; 3rd year cadets are authorized Cadet Senior Airman; 4th year cadets are authorized Cadet Staff Sergeant. Cadets will assume these grades during the second semester of each year, and if a higher temporary grade has not been achieved, the insignia of permanent grade will be worn. For example, all 1st year cadets who successfully complete the first semester will be promoted to Cadet Airman unless a higher temporary grade has been achieved. All third year cadets who successfully complete the third year will be promoted to the grade of Cadet Senior airman unless a higher temporary grade has been achieved. Assignment of temporary and permanent grades is contingent upon cadets meeting all eligibility requirements.

13

Page 22: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

Temporary Grade : This grade is awarded based on the position the cadet is assigned and the overall performance of the cadet. Since the grade is temporary, it may or may not be carried over from one year to the next. Cadets serving in temporary grade may be reverted to their former permanent grade if they no longer hold an officer's positions for two or more grading periods.

Cadets who hold temporary rank do so by the authority of the SASI and ASI. Therefore, ranks above permanent grade may be removed for cause at any time, by agreement of the SASI and ASI. If a cadet is promoted to a temporary rank he or she is expected to act in accordance with the core values of Wolf Group AFJROTC. Failure to perform all duties and act in the expected manner will result in demotion to the cadet’s permanent rank. There are no excuses, officers and senior NCOs will set the example for all cadets within the corps.

CHAPTER EIGHT

ACADEMIC and GRADING POLICY

AFJROTC is a fully established academic program designed to cover the entire 4-year high school educational experience. Each semester will provide the student with 1/2 academic credit. (See syllabus for current academic and leadership schedule).

1. GRADING CRITERIA:

Grading Procedures: Grades from the Aerospace Science portion of the course count 40% of the AFJROTC final grade and will be graded by the SASI. The Leadership Education portion of the grade counts 40% of the final grade and will be graded by the ASI. The wellness portion of the program counts for the remaining 20% of the final grade and will be graded by the SASI and/or ASI. Drill will be evaluated by the ASI and the SASI. HABITUAL NON-WEAR OF THE UNIFORM AND FAILURE TO MAINTAIN STANDARDS WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE AND DISMISSAL FROM THE PROGRAM. Grades will be computed in accordance with standard district grading policy.

MAJOR GRADES DAILY GRADESUniform Wear Class Attendance, Preparation & ParticipationExams (Midterm & Final) QuizzesParades, Special Events (FBISD Pass & Review,Retreat, etc)

Class work/Homework

GRADING SCALE: As set by the Texas State Board of Education

Grade Percentage Required A 90 and above B 80 - 89C 75 - 79D 70 - 74F 69 and below

Note: Drill, uniform wear, and Wellness training are essential, integral, and mandatory parts of the AFJROTC program. Failing to participate in any one of these programs may lead to removal from the program with an overall failing grade for non-compliance with AFJROTC standards.Personal responsibility is stressed throughout the JROTC program. Grades within the department are computed so that the student’s willingness to follow instructions has a direct impact on his or her final grade.

Cadets are responsible for wearing the correct Air Force (blue) uniform every Wednesday, or as otherwise designated by the SASI or ASI. The uniform must be worn for the entire day unless excused by the SASI or ASI. Make up days will be at the discretion of the SASI or ASI, but normally will be within two school days following the normal uniform day. Each cadet will be inspected against Air Force Standards on uniform day. Each inspection will be graded on a 100 point scale minus 5 points for each uniform or standards discrepancy.

16

Page 25: CHAPTER ONE€¦  · Web viewIn order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC

2. WELLNESS TRAINING :

Wellness training or Physical Fitness Training (PT) will normally be conducted on Fridays. Cadets will receive a grade based on participation, leadership, sportsmanship and PT uniform wear, (JROTC T-shirt, shorts, sweats [if needed], and tennis shoes suitable for working out and sports play). Failure to wear the appropriate clothing will result in a 25 point reduction. Refusal to participate will result in a grade of zero for the day and could lead to being disenrolled from the course due to non-compliance of AFJROTC standards. Only cadets with a valid medical excuse or note from parent will be exempt from participating but will be required to help with other duties as designated by the instructor or the class Wellness Training Leaders.

3. CLASS PARTICIPATION

Class Attendance: – Students must be in classroom and at their assigned seat (in position of parade rest) before the beginning bell. Students who are not in class by the bell will be referred to their AP for a pass to class

(After two late arrivals, students may be required to serve detention). If student is later than 20 minutes late for any class, they will be counted absent for the day (After three absences students are in danger of absence-failing and must make up absences in accordance with school policy).

AFJROTC is a course in citizenship and leadership. In order for students to learn how to apply, analyze, and synthesize the concepts taught; participation in class, drill, and physical fitness training are mandatory and will make be factored into their overall grade. Students will be given a grade determined by their class attitude and performance, drill participation and performance, and physical fitness/sports participation and sportsmanship.

4. UNIFORM DAY :

Uniform wear is a graded part of the AFJROTC class. The AFJROTC uniform of the day is required to be worn all day on Wednesaday or as designated by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor. Cadets will be inspected and graded on proper uniform wear on uniform days. Uniforms should be cleaned and pressed regularly. Failure to wear a uniform on designated days will result in a grade of zero for that day and could lead to disenrollment from the course due to non-compliance of AFJROTC standards. Uniforms are accountable items and must be turned in or paid for at the end of the year. Uniforms must be turned in in the same condition as received. It is imperative to have the uniform dry cleaned before turn in.

5. MISSED EXAMS/ASSIGNMENTS/INSPECTIONS :

Missed exams/assignments/inspections can be made up within two school days after the event or return from an excused absence. If absence is unexcused or student elects not to participate, then a grade of zero will be entered into the grade book. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed work. He/she must check with instructors after any absence to determine make up work. Extra credit may be allowed at the instructor’s discretion.

MANSFIELD TIMBERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL AFJROTC" Wolf Group "

Award of the "Wolf Group" JROTC Letter Jacket

The AFJROTC program at Timberview High School strives to teach many things, including leadership, citizenship, discipline, personal responsibility, and teamwork. In order to recognize achievement in these areas, our JROTC program is offering our cadets the opportunity to earn a letter jacket. Lettering in AFJROTC is not easy - and that is by design. Just like other activities at Timberview High School (athletics, choir, band, etc.), the award of the letter jacket is to recognize superior student achievement and performance.

In order to earn a letter jacket in JROTC, a cadet (at a minimum), must be in their third year of JROTC and continuing in our program, earn a minimum of 40 points, and be recommended by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) or the Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI). Points can be earned in the following manner:

3 points for having "perfect" attendance over the course of a nine week grading period. This means no absences at all, in all classes, during that nine week period.

2 points for straight A’s on an end of semester reporting period 2 points for each performance a cadet has as a member of the Color Guard or Drill Team

(this does not include Color Guard or Drill Team practice). 1/3 point for each Color Guard or Drill Team practice session. 2 points for every AFJROTC Community Service Project in which you participated 1 point for every non-AFJROTC Community Service Project if approved by the SASI or

ASI prior to participation. 2 points for every Drill Meet competition event a cadet participates in. 1 point for every fundraising Activity attended while in JROTC. Must be passing all classes with at least a “C” average At least one point must be earned from the event categories of fund raising, community

service, and Drill or Color Guard practice Must compete in at least one event in two separate drill meets.

As you can see, in order to earn a letter jacket, a cadet needs to be active in the "Wolf Group" and be a responsible student (i.e., good attendance, outstanding behavior, etc.). Cadets are responsible for keeping track of and tabulating their points, then submitting them to the SASI or ASI for verification. I encourage all cadets in the "Wolf Group" to strive for excellence, and the pursuit of this award.

Program Opportunities

The Timberview AFJROTC offers many and varied opportunities for you as a cadet.

Opportunities include: Becoming a member of our Color Guard Team and performing in events such as our

Home football games, VFW POW/MIA ceremony, Wreathes Across America ceremony, Memorial Day ceremony and many others.

Joining the Drill Team and entering competions. Be a part of our school AFJROTC spirit team Compete with other JROTC units in Field Day Join the Orienteering Team and go to orienteering meets March in the Veterans Day Parade March in the District Pass-in-Review Join us on a CIA trip to the Alliance Air Show March in the Toys for Tots Parade Many other opportunities and service projects exist throughout the school year

1. Embodiment of the Core Values

Any cadet who wishes to fully participate in program activities must be the embodiment fo “Respect and Integrity”. Their commitment to these values will be shown in their behavior, both in and out of JROTC class, and in their relationships with both adults and peers. Leadership by example is a paramount ideal among effective leaders. Therefore, students who desire to attend such things as the Alliance Air Show and other AFJROTC events and Field(CIA) Trips, must understand and display the TX-20053 core values at all times. Some important indicators that can reflect either positively or negatively on your commitment to the core values are listed below.

Uniform Wear: Proper and timely wear of the uniform indicates a desire to conform to the directives of AFJROTC and lead by example.

Demerits: Demerits indicate an unwillingness to conform and a lack of self-discipline required for leadership.

Referrals and Suspensions: Referrals and suspension indicate an inability or desire to act respectfully and a lack of integrity. Therefore, this type of behavior will result in the cadet being ineligible for SLS.

2. Academic Success

Though not solely an indicator of leadership potential, academic success is a prerequisite to progress within Timberview High School and TX-20053. Though no set grade point average will be required, a candidate for promotion must have exhibited the desire to achieve academic success and have passed sufficient courses to be on level with his/her academic class.

1. The AFJROTC uniforms (except for the insignia) are the same as those worn by active duty personnel and must be worn in accordance with Air Force Instruction 36-2903. It is the distinctive dress of a proud and honorable profession. The ideal Timberview High School cadet must maintain an exemplary appearance that will project a sense of pride in the Cadet Group, Timberview High School, and the Air Force. A professional military image has no room for the extreme, the unusual, or the faddish.

ABU notes: ABUs may be worn only with garrison ABU cap and sage green boots. ABU pants must always be properly bloused over the sage green boots. ABUs will not be worn with a shoulder chord or ascots.

2. While in uniform, you may wear a wristwatch and rings, but no more than three rings at any one time. You may wear one bracelet if it is neat and conservative. However, the bracelet must not detract from military image, must not be wider than one-half inch, and must not subject anyone to potential injury. You may not wear ornaments on your head or around your neck. Thumb rings are not allowed in uniform. Colored bracelets that support a cause are not allowed.

3. Female cadets in uniform may wear earrings if the earrings are conservative and kept within sensible limits. Sunglasses are not allowed while in a military formation. Neither eyeglasses nor sunglasses can be worn around the neck while in uniform.

AIR FORCE SONG

Off we go, into the wild blue yonder,Climbing high into the sun:

Here they come, zooming to meet our thunder,At’em boys, Give’er the gun! (Give’er the gun now!)

Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,Off with one helluva roar!

We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Minds of men, fashioned a crate of thunder,Sent it high, into the blue;

Hands of men, blasted the world asunder; How they lived, God only knew! (God only knew then!)

Souls of men, dreaming of skies to conquerGave us wings, ever to soar!

With scouts before, and bombers galore. Hey!Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Bridge: “A Toast to the Host”

Here’s a toast to the hostOf those who love the vastness of the sky,

To a friend, we send, a message of his brothers men who fly.We drink, to those who gave their all of old,

Then down we roar to score the rainbow’s pot of gold.A toast, to the host, of men we boast, the U.S. Air Force!

Zoom!

Off we go, into the wild sky yonder,Keep the wings level and true;

If you’d live to be a grey-haired wonderKeep the nose out of the blue! (Out of the blue, boy!)

Flying men, guarding the nation’s border,
