Dear SuncoastHR Members,
Spring is here. Finally! For me, I know that spring is officially getting
close when Major League Baseball players begin migrating to Florida for
Spring Training and college basketball’s March Madness briefly takes
over the sports world. In reality though, March 20th 2017 marked the first
day of spring. The date, known as the vernal equinox, is the day when
there is an equal amount of sunlight and darkness in the northern
hemisphere.
As spring rolls forward, the temperatures will continue to rise. Do you
know why? It might not be for the reason you are thinking of. You see,
the Earth’s temperature does not rise based on the relative closeness to
the Sun but because of how much of the surface of the Earth is pointing
toward the Sun. Do you remember talk of the Earth’s axis/tilt in science
class? Is it coming back to you? Good! Then you will remember that the
Earth can be close to Sun but we experience the chill of winter because
our hemisphere is simply pointing away from the Sun. As our
hemisphere opens up toward the Sun, the warmer we get…no matter
our distance from our glorious energy source.
So, what does all this have to do with HR you ask? Well, I believe figuring out all of this science stuff required some
serious outside-the-box thinking and open-mindedness. The same kind of thinking that is required to improve certain
HR functions. The biggest example I can think of right now is resume review. Have you seen the statistics that state
that the average recruiter spends about 6 seconds reviewing a resume? Amazing, right? But what ’s being done about
it? Not much it seems. Organizations that rely on recruiters for talent are reviewing in seconds what candidates spend
hours, days, months, and in many cases serious money to create. Why? If the recruiter or hiring manager is simply
looking for name, current position, last position, and education, why do candidates feel the need to spend so much time
creating a document that represents them so fully?
As someone who typically likes to go against the grain, I see an opportunity here. Especially when you consider how
many bad hires (see: “bad fit” terminations) happen annually and how many organizations exit employees for having
false information on their resumes. There is a clear disconnect in the resume review department.
My recommendation is to do the opposite. If six seconds is industry standard, then spend 6 minutes or longer. Make
sense of the resume! Instead of asking why a candidate left one position for another, try to figure it out yourself. Is there
a pattern? Can you find the red flags? Are there skills, based on his resume that the candidate should have but he’s
unable to articulate? There is probably a very good reason for that. Did you Google any of her accomplishments? Can
you determine the validity of that nomination for Silicon Valley’s HR Executive of the Year? Did you check government
records to determine the existence of that “highly successful” 501(c)(3)?
Hiring is a puzzle. Why leave major pieces off to the side while you take on the expense of putting the puzzle together.
You might just find that the person you think is a great fit, actually isn’t. On the other hand, you may find that deep
research unveils a fundamental candidate who will be perfect for your organization. We have to differentiate from what
we, or others for that matter, are doing. You know what they say about doing the same thing and hoping for different
results, right?
By the way, there is no such thing as Silicon Valley’s HR Executive of the Year. But I’m hoping you already Googled
that! ;)
