4.1.1 INTRODUCTION
Asian Paints Limited is India's largest paint company and the third
largest paint company in Asia today, with a turnover of Rs 36.7 billion
(around USD 851 million). The company has an enviable reputation in
the corporate world for professionalism, fast track growth, and
building shareholder equity. Asian Paints Ltd. operates in 21
countries and has 29 paint manufacturing facilities in the world
servicing consumers in over 65 countries.
The company has come a long way since its small beginnings in 1942.
Four friends were willing to take on the world's biggest, most famous
paint companies operating in India. Over the course of 25 years Asian
Paints Ltd. became a corporate force and India’s leading Paints
Company.
Asian Paints Ltd. operates in 22 countries across the world. It has
manufacturing facilities in each of these countries and is the largest
paint company in ten overseas markets.
4.1.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
1st February, 1942
Mr. Champaklal H. Choksey, Mr. Chimanlal N. Choksi, Mr. Suryakant
C. Dani and Mr. Arvind R. Vakil get together to manufacture paint in a
garage on Foras Road, Bombay. They name their company 'The Asian
Oil and Paint Company', a name that they picked randomly from a
telephone directory.
1945:- Asian Paints touches a turnover of Rs. 3, 50,000, with an
innovative marketing strategy ‘to reach consumers in the remotest
corners of the country with small packs.
1954:- Asian Paints mascot, Gattu, the mischievous kid, is born.
1957-66:- The family-owned company makes the transition to a
professionally managed organization. British company Balmer Lawrie
rejects the products of a giant British paint company in favour of

Asian Paints. Asian Paints embarks on an ambitious grassroots
marketing campaign part.
1967:- Asian Paints emerges as India's leading paint company ahead
of any international competition.
Today :- Asian Paints becomes the 10th largest decorative paint
company in the world. Asian Paints is more than twice the size of its
nearest competitor. It is recognized as one of the most admired
companies in India and abroad.
Rated best employer by BT-Hewitt survey, 2000 bluest of the blue
chips by Hindu Business Line, most admired company to work for by
ET-BT survey, 2000. On the recommendations of Booz, Allen and
Hamilton, Asian Paints restructured itself into growth, decorative and
international business units. Asian Paints aims to become the 5th
largest decorative paint company in the world.

4.2.1 INTRODUCTION
Atul Ltd. is a member of Lalbhai Group, one of the oldest business
houses of India, with interests mainly in dyes, chemicals and textiles.
It’s headquarter is in Atul, Dist.: Valsad. Its manufacturing facilities
are at Atul, Ankleshwer in Gujarat and Tarapur in Maharashtra. The
group is strongly committed to serve the society in the fields of
education, health as well as culture.
4.2.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
It was incorporated in 1947, Atul Ltd. (formerly Atul Products Ltd.)
was founded by Kasturbhai Lalbhai with a dream to make India self
reliant in chemicals generate employment on a large-scale and create
wealth for the society. Atul Ltd. became the first private sector
company of India to be inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first
Prime Minister of the country. The company thus commenced its
business with just a few dyestuffs, the know-how of which was
brought from foreign companies.
Over the years, Atul Ltd. joined hands with American Cyanamid
Corporation (1952), Imperial Chemical Industries plc (1955) and Ciba-
Geigy Ltd. (1960) to form respectively 3 joint venture companies,
namely, Cyanamid India Ltd., Atic Industries Ltd. and Cibatul Ltd.
respectively. Atic Industries Ltd. and Cibatul Ltd. were merged into
Atul Ltd. in 1995 and 1998 respectively.

4.3.1 INTRODUCTION
Bhageria Dye-Chem. Limited is a dyes and intermediate industry
situated at Vapi Industrial area, Ta: Pardi, Dist.: Valsad. The main
business of the company is manufacturing and sales of dyes, dye
intermediates required for dye manufacturers and chemicals. The
company is also engaged in merchant export of related items. The
main thrust of the company is on export, which constitute around
80% of total sales of the company. The company is a ‘Recognized
Export House’.
4.3.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Bhageria Dye-Chem. Limited was established in 1989 with an
objective to serve the dyes and intermediates industry all over the
globe. Company commenced its operations by setting up a Vinyl
Sulphone plant at Vapi (Gujarat) with capacity of 540 T.P.A. which
has now expanded to 3600 T.P.A. Subsequently, company has gone
for further expansion in other dyes intermediates and dyestuffs. The
company successfully incorporates the innovative trends, total quality
management and proficiency in work process through advanced
research and analysis. Bhageria has made significant strides in the
field of dyes intermediates and other related products since its
inception. Nearly 80% of its production is being exported worldwide to
various clients including multinationals.
Its products are being exported to Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, and
Germany, U.S.A and other European and African countries. Today
Bhageria Dye Chem. is one of the largest manufacturer and exporter
of intermediates and dyes.

4.4.1 INTRODUCTION
Metrochem commenced operations in 1976. Over the years, the
company has achieved steady growth in productivity, output and
employment as well as widened product-mix and applications by end-
users worldwide. Metrochem’s product and services are recognized for
their superiority in quality, delivery and value for money. They have
made continued improvements in every segment of Metrochem’s
activities, quality and considerations.
4.4.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Metrochem commenced operations in 1976 with small installed
capacity of 100 tones per year. Its present production capacity is
28260 MT per annum. Metrochem has set up modern manufacturing
facilities at two locations GIDC, Vatva, Ahmedabad and at Umraya,
Vadodara. The units serve the demand for high-end dyestuff from its
efforts. The company has further integrated all of its manufacturing
activities for improved operational efficiency. A Metrochem Industry
Limited has a Govt. of India recognised trading house for its exports
performance.
Metrochem commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has
found a new expression by its obtaining ISO 9001 certification. KPMG,
Internationally renowned quality registrars, has recognized company’s
manufacturing facility at Vatva Unit Ahmedabad, Kroma Labs and
corporate functions by awarding ISO 9001 its highest citation.
Metrochem today enjoys a distinct leadership advantage in dyestuff
and dye intermediates industry. The total sales turnover of the
company went up from Rs.15 crores in 1986-87 to Rs.248.61 crores in
2007-08. Two thirds of the company’s turnover comes from exports.
Its products find acceptance by renowned multinational corporations
and several other customers in over 30 countries, worldwide. The
company is among the top exporters of dyestuff and intermediates
from India for several years.

The company also has strategic alliance with Ciba Speciality
Chemicals (Ciba), a leading worldwide supplier of textile dyes and
chemicals, recently, both the companies have extended their co-
operation agreement. The strengthened co-operation will allow
Metrochem to exploit the capacity of its plants.

4.5.1 INTRODUCTION

On 2 January 1995, their company, Meghmani Organics Limited, was
incorporated as a joint stock company with limited liability pursuant
to Part IX of the Indian Companies Act. year wise historical timeline is
given below.
1986: Began operations to produce phthalocynine green 7, popularly
known as pigment green 7 at Vatva plant.
1995: Diversified into manufacture of agrochemicals at Chharodi
plant.
1996: Expansion of pigments business. Panoli plant was established
to manufacture CPC blue. CPC blue is a key raw material used for the
manufacture of our pigment blue (15) and pigment.

4.6.1 INTRODUCTION
Dynemic Products Ltd is India’s leading manufacturer and exporter of
food colors, Lake colours, blended colours and Intermediate colors
with wide applications in food industry, cosmetic industry, pharma
industry, Ink and edible ink industry.
Dynemic has developed an inherent ability to manufacture a wide
range of dyes for food, dyes for cosmetic, dyes for pharma, dyes for
edible ink at continuous levels.
The manufacturing facilities of Dynemic Products Ltd are certified
with HACCP and ISO 9001:2000 which ensures food colours, lake
colours and the entire product range of colours are of highest quality
and at par with international standards.
4.6.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
In 1990, a team of directors, with expertise in every aspect of business
decided to commence manufacturing of dye intermediates. The
company started manufacturing of sulphopheny, carboxy, pyrazolone
and other pyrazolone based dye intermediates.
In 1996, the time came to move one step ahead and the company
decided to manufacture synthetic food colors. A separate facility for
the manufacturing of food colors was set up, which marked the advent
of our long journey to excellence. The goals of the company have
translated into reality only because of the highly competent team of
directors, headed by Mr. B. K. Patel, managing director of the
company having expertise in marketing, Mr. R. B. Patel, Mr. D. P.
Patel and Mr. S. P. Patel who form a technical team and look after the
production and quality control.

4.7.1 INTRODUCTION
Aarti Industries Limited (AIL) is a member of Alchemie group. It was
promoted in September 1984 by a group of technocrats. Over the last
more than 25 years, it has crossed several milestones. Aarti Industries
limited set up a number of expansion and diversification projects,
funded by a public issue in 1992, institutional assistance and from
internal accruals. Its manufacturing is basic bulk chemicals, dyes and
pigment intermediates, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Its
manufacturing facilities are at Vapi, Sarigam, Jhagadiya in Gujarat
and Tarapur, Dombivli in Maharastra.
4.7.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The first unit of Aarti group, Alchemie laboratories, commenced
commercial production of Dimethyl Sulphate (DMS) in the year 1975.
Today, Aarti has acquired world-class expertise in the development
and manufacturing of dyes and pigment intermediates, basic bulk
chemicals, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals along with their
intermediates, rubber chemicals, surfactant intermediates and
speciality chemicals. Aarti is amongst the largest producers of
benzene based basic and intermediate chemicals in India.
Aarti has the privilege of catering to the requirements of leading
manufacturers of dyes, pigments, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals
and rubber chemicals in countries such as USA, UK, Germany, Spain,
Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, Korea, China, Russia, etc. Aarti
also has representatives in USA and a subsidiary company in UK to
provide better services to its export customers.

4.8.1 INTRODUCTION
Sudarshan Chemical Industries Limited is the world class
manufacturer of pigments, agro chemicals and speciality chemicals in
terms of quality and service. Cost of delivered product at par with
China. Among top three in South Asia in agrochemicals in categories.
Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd. (SCIL) has been a leading player
in the pigment and agrochemical sector for over 50 years. This is the
first chemical company in India to be awarded the ISO 9001 certificate
for pigment division in 1993. The high quality standards are
maintained at every level.
Production of pigments is carried out at plants in Vapi, Pune, Roha,
and Mahad. Vast range of products includes organic and inorganic
pigments, speciality pigments, intermediates and pesticides. Great
emphasis is placed on Research and Development activities. There are
over 100 qualified scientists currently working in their laboratories.
4.8.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Sudarshan Chemical Industries, a pioneer in the field of pigments in
India, was set up in 1952 with the initiative of its chairman, late
Dr. R. J. Rathi. Over the last 50 years, the company has gained a

diversified into the fields of agrochemicals and environment

1989 - Joining Hands with Dainippon
Dainippon Inks and Chemicals - Japan with a turnover in excess of $7
billion forged an alliance with Sudarshan with a 29% equity
participation thus providing leading pigment technology and a wide
international network.
1993 - ISO Certification
Sudarshan became the first chemical company in India to receive the
ISO 9001 certification for its pigment division.
1994 - A New Plant in Mahad
Mahad plant was set up with the latest technology to keep pace with
the growing demand for our products.
1999 - Roha Plant Expansion
The plant at Roha was expanded to cater a growing demand for
Speciality inorganic pigments.
2000 - ERP Solution - SAP R3
Sudarshan successfully implemented SAP R3 an Enterprise Resource
Planning Module package in all three plants and its depots.
2001 - ISO 14001 for Mahad
The Mahad plant of Sudarshan was certified by BVQI for ISO
14001:1996 for environmental standards.

(b) Mica Based Pearl Pigments
These types of pearl pigments are manufactured by coating mica with
either titanium dioxide or iron oxide. The transparency of pigment
particles is due to extremely thin transparent coating of titanium
dioxide in the form of micro-crystals.
There are several applications which use Mica Pearl pigments such as
textile printing, paints, plastics, inks and cosmetics.
