CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD A. Research Design This research is categorized into descriptive qualitative research because it is aimed at describing how the teachers performed applying teaching and learning prosess and what activities the students in the classroom especially in written cycle though Genre Based Approach at Junior High School 9 Solok Selatan. So, that the research was designed as qualitative research, as Gay (2000: 16) describes that qualitative research seeks to probe deeply into the research setting in order to obtain understanding about the way things are, why they are that way and how the participants in the context perceive them. CHAPTER IIIRESEARCH METHOD

A. Research DesignThis research is categorized into descriptive qualitative research because it is aimed at describing how the teachers performed applying teaching and learning prosess and what activities the students in the classroom especially in written cycle though Genre Based Approach at Junior High School 9 Solok Selatan. So, that the research was designed as qualitative research, as Gay (2000: 16) describes that qualitative research seeks to probe deeply into the research setting in order to obtain understanding about the way things are, why they are that way and how the participants in the context perceive them. In this research the writer did a case study about the problems happening at Junior High School 9 Solok Selatan and this desciptive study is done to investigate teachers technique in teaching writing and teachers technique in evaluating students writing product . Specifically showing how the implementation Genre Based Approach in teaching written cycle especially desciptive text.

B. Subject of the StudyThe subject of this study is English teacher who has been involved in English Language Teaching at Junior High School 9 Solok Selatan in academic year 2012/2013. Actually, there are two English teachers and they are characterized as follow: (1) Certification; one teacher has followed certification and the others have not followed yet, (2) Experience; one teacher has spent her time for about 18 years in teaching, another has taught approximately 2 years (3) Rank; one of them is 4 A, and the others are 3 A. From the two teachers, the researcher was interested to observe a teacher who has spent her time for about 2 years in teaching .the English teacher have been teaching in Junior High School 9 Solok Selatan since Januari 10th 2010. She was gradueted from one of University in Padang on 2006. This selected teacher teaches in 3 classes, i.e.VIII1, VIII2, and VIII3. Yet among them, the researcher was attracted to select VIII2.

C. InstrumentationThe instruments which are used in this research focuses on the data that are needed to be collected. The collected data will be used to explain the real condition of the process of teaching and learning of English especially in teaching and learning process of writing. There were three instruments that had been used in this research. They are as follows:1. Observation SheetThis observation was used to collect the data on teaching and learning prosess in the class. In the observation, the researcher observed the process of teaching and learning of writing from the beginning to the end of the activities, Observation of participant in the context of a natural setting. Observation data were used for the purpose of description of settings, activities, people, and meanings of what is observe from the perspective of the participants. The data, then, were confirmed and categorized.The researcher also used interviewed in this research. This interview was used to confirm the abnormal observed fact during the process of teaching writing.2. DocumentationThis documentation is used to help the researcher in conducting the research. The researcher will take the format used by the English teacher to evaluate students writing and criterion use to assess students writing product.

D. Techniques of Data CollectionThe data were collected through the observation of the teachersrs technique in teaching writing in the classroom. The researcher monitor the teacher, whether he or she was able to bring the students to true language learning principles and to involved all significant points such as: social context, shared experience, control of relevant vocabulary and grammatical patterns maximally or not yet. After doing observation, the data also was gained through interview. This interview was aimed to confirmed the unstatiesfying items from the observation.The researcher also collected the data through document analysis. In this case, the researcher wanted to know how the English teacher evaluated the students writing score and what the format that used by the English teacher.E. Techniques of Data Analysis1. ObservationThe each item from the observation would be categorized into there as below: a. 1: Low b. 2: Average c. 3: GoodNext, the data would be totalized and analyzed each stage in observation result would be calculated in order to get the mean score. Then, all of the scores for the each stage would be calculated. Finally, the researcher found the quality of teaching stage carried out by the English teacher.2. DocumentationFrom documentation the researcher would analyze the evaluation technique used by the English teacher in evaluating students writing product. Whether from the book mark or from the students writing sheet.
