3.1 PROGRESS OF TRAININGS 2014-15.
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy and Development (MGIRED) during the year
April 2014 to March 2015, conducted several training programmes on creating awareness in
the areas of renewable energy, energy conservation, rain water harvesting for different
categories of participants as described below:

3.1.1.1 Awareness and Training programme for ZP/District/Taluk level

Sri. Rangaswamy Elango
Officers of this level are the district level
planning and implementing authorities of
various programmes of Govt. Creating
awareness on RE, Energy Conservation,
Environment conservation, Rain water
harvesting and allied subjects would sensitize
them, so that they give weightage to these
subjects and incorporate them in their district
level programmes and help in reducing the gap in
power demand and ensure sustainable
development.
MGIRED being the Southern Regional Centre
for capacity building of various stakeholders on
Rural Energy, organized two days training on
RE, EC and EP for Southern State Officers on
19th& 20th of February 2015 and 26 & 27th
February 2015. There were 27 participants in
each of the programmes. The programme on RE,
EC and EP was inaugurated by Sri. Punati
Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED of MGIRED. The
programme included sessions on RWH, Small Hydro Projects, Scope for use
of RE in Districts, Food Safety, Successful experimentation of SWM in
towns, Biofuels, Biogas and Rural Development. Sri. Manoj Kumar, IFS,
Conservator of Forest, Mercara circle held a session on “Nature Inspires”.
Sri. Ratnakar briefed about the feasibility of taking up pico-hydro projects
with minimum head where water flow is available.
CEOs of ZPs, DCFs, representatives from NGOs and various government
organization participated in the programme. Participants were given hands
on experience of handling various Energy Devices at Institute Energy Park.
They were also taken on field visit to Biofuel unit, Biogas plant and 100 kW
Solar PV Grid Interactive System at GKVK, UAS, Bengaluru.
Officers gained awareness from inspiring lectures on rural development by
Sri. Shanmugham, Ex-President, Odenthurai Panchayat, Coimbatore, Tamil
Nadu and Sri. Rangaswamy Elango, Vice President, Kutumbakam Grama
Panchayat, Tamilnadu. In the first training programme held on 19th& 20th
February 2015 Sri. Shanmugham in his lecture explained about his individual
achievements for the past two decades in his Gram Panchayat. Emphasising
on zero corruption, he could save lakhs of rupees which he has invested on
wind power which gave his Gram Panchayat additional income. He could
ensure quality development of his village with excellent roads, drains,
housing and he has also promoted SHG entrepreneurship.
In the second training programme held on 26th& 27th February 2015 Sri.

Rangaswamy Elango, ex-president of Kuthambakkam GP in his session
briefed about the programme and activities taken up by him for social
equality, and good infrastructure like roads/drainage/street lights/pucca
houses; low cost building technologies, low cost toilets & solar enterprise.
Arrack brewing in his GP's jurisdiction was totally eliminated. He also
developed woman entrepreneurship & self sustaining micro enterprises. A
Panchayat Academy was also established.
3.1.1.2 Awareness programme for State Officials
Objectives:
Ø To create awareness among officers so that they give more importance to
RE programmes and ensure their successful implementation, adoption
and propagation of the same.
Ø To provide training on adoption of RE for organizations working for
security, vigilance and health care, which require power round the clock.
For such organizations energy security can be provided by the renewable
energy.
Officers of this level are the district level planning and implementing
authorities of various programmes of Govt. Creating awareness on RE,
Energy Conservation, Environment conservation, Rain water harvesting and
allied subjects would sensitize them, so that they give weightage to these
subjects and incorporate them in their district level programmes and help in
reducing the gap in power demand and ensure sustainable development. Four
programmes were organized for southern state officers, 245 participants has
participated in this programmes

3.1.1.3 Training Programme on Renewable Energy for Elected Representatives
& Officers of PRI
Objectives:
Ø To train the local Govt. authorities and project implementing officers on
various issues such as environment protection, energy conservation,
climate change, renewable energy, biogas, bio-fuel plantations,
smokeless chulhas, rain water harvesting and allied subjects.
Ø This helps in better utilization of funds allocated to Panchayats for
managing the overall environment by conserving energy and adopting
renewable energy technologies.
Thirty programmes were organized for Gram Panchayat (GP) Members from
29 (except Bengaluru Urban) Districts. Totally 983 GP Representatives
comprising of Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs), Presidents, Vice
Presidents, Members and Secretaries participated.
Topics covered under this training were:
Ÿ Role of GP's in implementing RE Projects in Rural areas; EP; RE
Sources & Devices; RWH & Ground Water Recharging; Bio-fuels;
Demonstration of RE Devices & RWH Structures; Subsidies and bank
loan facilities available to purchase RE equipment like solar, wind,
biogas plants, etc.

3.1.1.4 “Enjoy while you learn” - Awareness programme for school students
Objectives:
Ø To create awareness on renewable energy, energy conservation,
environment protection, scarcity of fossil fuels and their impact on
causing environmental pollution, forest conservation, rainwater
harvesting, improved cook stoves etc.
Thirty two programmes were organized for 1826 school children from various
Private and Government Schools. These students were shown documentary
films on EP and EC, Lectures were given on RE, EC, Importance of Forestry,
EP, SWM, RWH, etc. They were taken around the Energy Park and Exhibition
Halls to give them exposure to working of various energy devices.

3.1.1.5 Awareness programme for college students
Objectives:
Ø To create awareness among the students on renewable energy, energy
conservation and environment protection.
Ø To educate them on renewable energy sources & devices, energy
conservation, scarcity of fossil fuels and their impact on environment,
forest conservation, rainwater harvesting, energy audit etc.

Ø To provide practical demonstration on technologies and power
generation units such as biomass gassifier, bio-fuel production unit and
kitchen waste biogas plant, vermicompost unit, wind energy generation
unit, solar power generation, etc.
Ø To provide information and knowledge on waste management hierarchy,
hygienic and scientific way of waste disposal and importance of
separating dry & wet waste.
Twenty Four programmes were organized for 1019 PUC & Undergraduates
college students from various disciplines. Lectures were given on RE sources
& devices, EC, Biofuels, Improved Cook stoves, RWH, EP, SWM,
Importance of Forestry, etc.
Students were briefed about Institute's activities and taken around Energy
Park and Exhibition Halls to give practical demonstration on systems like
biomass gassifier, bio-fuel unit, bicycle water pump, kitchen waste biogas
plant, etc.

3.1.1.6 International Students visits
Global Citizens for Sustainable Development, Bengaluru bring their summer

3.1.2 Training Programmes – Skill development
3.1.2.1 Training for rural youth in districts where “Soura Belaku” scheme is
implemented by RDPR

Five programmes were conducted for the solar technicians, PDO's and
elected representatives of GPs from Shivamogga, Chitradurga,
Chamarajnagara, Belagavi, Yadgiri, Dakshina Kannada, Mandya, Kalaburgi,
Kolara & Uttara Kannada districts who have installed solar street lights under
Sourabelaku Scheme with the objective of training them to maintain Solar
Street Lights. Totally 189 participants attended the programme. Faculty were
drawn from the companies that have installed the solar street lights in the
respective districts. Practical demonstrations were done by MGIRED Faculty
and Technicians.
3.1.2.2 Solar technicians Training Programme for ITI students and rural youth
in Coordination with National Level trainers approved by MNRE
Objective:
Ø To provide training on maintenance and servicing of SPV's and other
solar devices
The programme was organized in collaboration with Bharathiya Vikas Trust,
Udupi (National Level Trainers on Solar Technician Training recognized by
MNRE).
Seven programmes were organized at Mysore, Dakshina Kannada,
Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, Bellary, Dharwad, Koppala and Davanagere
districts. There was very good response from 454 ITI students and local youth.

3.1.2.3 Training programme for members of SHG's /NGO's and rural women on
renewable energy, environment protection and improved cook stoves
Objective:
Ø To create awareness among rural women on RE, Energy conservation,
construction of smokeless chulhas which can create self employment
opportunities.
Nine off-campus training programmes were organized for SHG women in
Aralaguppe, Tumkur District, Bevuru, Doddi, Thagachigere, Ramanagara
district, Harebommanahalli, Bengaluru Rural district, Gudemaranahalli,
Nagenahalli, Magadi Tq, in Coordination with TIDE. Totally 380 SHG women

participated in these programmes. Faculty members and Project Manager
from MGIRED along with Project Coordinators from TIDE executed these
programmes. Solar demonstration devices like solar lanterns, table lamps
along with solar panels, solar cookers, portable smokeless stoves, biofuel seed
samples, oil extracts, and mini oil expellers were exhibited during this
programmes along with self explaining bulletin boards to create awareness
among the rural women folk. Further information on EC, Solar devices,
Biofuels and Vermicomposting was also given.
3.1.3 Energy Clubs – Schools and Colleges
Objectives:
Ø To create awareness on energy/water conservation
Ø To inculcate best practices among students
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural energy and development recognizes the immense
value of Schools and School Children along with parents, teachers, partners and the
society at large can make to help curb the wasteful usage of power. As the demand for
power in the country is steadily increasing and energy resources are being rapidly
depleted, it is vital to involve our Students, as decision-makers of tomorrow, and join
them in an initiative to avert a crippling power crisis.
Objective of forming Energy Clubs at schools and college is to create awareness on
Energy/Water Conservation and inculcate best practices among students. MGIRED
Faculty delivered lectures on RE and EC followed by Quiz, Drawing, Essay Writing,

Pick and Speak competitions. Thereby, awareness was created among the future
citizens in judiciously using resources and motivated to take technology to the masses.
3.1.4 Walk-through Energy Assessment of Institutions
Objective was to create awareness among employees of KSDL in energy usage and
sensitize them in efficient energy management. MGIRED and TIDE jointly executed
the walk through energy assessment of KSDL, Bengaluru a medium scale
manufacturing industry under GoK during the month of January, 2015. Gist of
activities: discussions with the top management of KSDL; comprehensive walk-
through energy assessment wherein the group interacted with various department
employees to understand their energy usage patterns. Data pertaining to existing
system configuration, monthly energy consumption for a year, practices in the
industry and production trends were gathered, based on which a comprehensive
report was compiled and suggestions were proposed for reduction of electricity
consumption. Industry best practices were also suggested to add value in energy
management.

3.2 Seminars
3.2.1 World Earth Day -“Green Cities”
Earth Day was observed on 22-04-2014 by MGIRED through a seminar on “Green
Cities” conducted jointly with Ecology and Environment Dept, GoK.

was Chief Guest for the function; Dr. Ravindra, IAS., retd. Chief Secretary GoK &
Chief of Center for Sustainable Development; Sri. T.M. VijayaBhaskar, IAS, Addl.
Chief Secretary, RDPR; Sri. G.V. Sugur, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests;
Sri. M. Laxminarayana, IAS, Commissioner BBMP; Dr. S. Seetharamu, Director,
CPRI, GoI and 45 participants from various departments actively participated to
make the seminar a grand success.

Bengaluru; Sri. A.R. Shivakumar, Senior Fellow, KSCST, Bengaluru; Dr. Siddappa
Setty, ATREE, Bengaluru and Dr. T.V. Ramachandra, Co-ordinator, Energy &
Wetlands Research Group, Centre for Ecological Science, IISc, Bengaluru.
After presentations and discussions with participants, following points which
emerged were communicated to the Concerned Government Departments for
bringing them in to effect in order to save our Planet Earth
Forest Department / BBMP / Environment Department:
1. Plant more carbon dioxide absorbing plants in all plantable lands in urban areas
and make efforts to ensure that 33% land area is under green belt.
2. Protect tanks and lakes, forests, common public lands, etc. from encroachment
and recover back encroached areas.
3. Create awareness among public regarding need for green belt and forest areas.
4. Give more thrust on propagation of smokeless chullas in rural households.
5. Sensitize elected representatives and public regarding need for urgently
arresting pollution and protecting our invaluable forests and its bio-diversity.
6. Govt. should ensure industrial and hospital sectors compliance of pollution and
environmental laws.
Transport Department / Energy Department
1. Solar based battery charging centres should be opened like petrol bunks, so that
plying of electrical vehicles by public will be encouraged.
2. Replace conventional public transport buses with electrical buses to encourage
EC and thereby reduce pollution in and around Bengaluru and other major
urban areas.
3. Provide local mass transit trains in Bengaluru similar to Mumbai and Chennai.
4. Expand Metro Rail network all over Bengaluru.
5. Maintain pedestrian path without any hurdles.
6. Incorporate meshed concrete bricks in the pedestrian path for ground water
charging by which floor level temperature also will come down.
7. Arrange BMTC bus stops at a distance of 200 to 400 meters away from cross
roads which will enable easy plying of traffic without causing traffic jam.
8. Provide separate lane for bicycles in all areas of Bengaluru.
BBMP / Pollution Control Board
1. Govt. should ensure waste water treatment and re-use.
2. Municipalities & Corporations and BWSSB must treat waste water before

letting it into ponds / rivers / streams.
3. Source segregation of solid waste is to be ensured. In this regard, awareness is to
be given to all. Further the wet waste may be used for Bio-gas generation and
solid waste for recycling. Plastic can be used for making black tarred roads or
diesel.
4. Ensure under-ground drainage systems throughout Bengaluru.
5. Suryapeta in Andhra Pradesh and Namakkal in Tamilnadu are Zero-waste cities
which can be emulated by us also.
Karnataka Housing Board / Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation / PWD /
KREDL / BDA
1. All new Govt. buildings to be constructed as Green buildings.
2. Govt. should ensure strict compliance of ECBC code for multi-storied
buildings/apartments.
3. Govt. should ensure 100% implementation of RWH in Bengaluru.
4. Give more thrust on recharging bore-wells and make compulsory recharge of at
least two such wells in each village.
Energy Department
1. More thrust to be given for Renewable Energy. Transfer of licences allotted for
Renewable Energy projects from one company to other should not be allowed
till the project is installed and commissioned.
2. Action must be taken to provide lighting by means of solar/small wind/pico-
hydro in remote villages/hamlets without any grid power.
3. Govt. must initiate suitable action to create public awareness on energy and
water conservation.
3.2.2 National Energy Conservation Day -Energy Conclave on “Strategies And
Challenges in Energy Conservation”
MGIRED organized a State Level Energy Conclave on Strategies and Challenges for
PDOs, IREP Engineers, scientists and research scholars, teachers and students. The
aim of the conclave was to provide a forum for interaction between researchers and
the field executives for exchange of ideas and information on technology advances.

Components of this programme:
1. Presentation of Research paper / extension work / community work.
2. Lectures by eminent speakers on subject like energy planning for cluster areas,
bio-gas, RWH, solid waste management and bio-fuels.
3. Competitions for students.
ED, MGIRED demonstrated his conviction for the cause of Environment and Energy
security, by initiating usage of 5% blend of biodiesel for the institute's diesel vehicles.
3.3 Workshops
3.3.1 Value Addition of Bamboo
On the occasion of World Bamboo Day'14, MGIRED and Centre for Green Building
Materials and Technology (CGBMT), Bengaluru jointly organized bamboo value
addition workshop on 17th and 18th September. The objective of the programme was
to create awareness on the importance of Bamboo and its utility in making of small
furniture and handicrafts along with selection, grading and treatment of bamboo raw
material. Students of Parikrama humanity foundation, Samarthanam Trust, college
students, Medhars of Kolar district and other interested women actively participated
in the programme. Hands on training was given to the participants to make a Bamboo
bus shelter which was erected at Srirampura railway crossing.

Valedictory programme was held at MGIRED and presided by Dr. K. Sundernaik, IFS
(Retd.), Chairman, Bamboo Society of India, Bengaluru. The gathering was
welcomed by Sri Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED, MGIRED and eminent speakers
Sri A.K. Verma, IFS, PCCF -HoFF (Retd.), Dr. N. Barathi, Growmore Biotech Ltd, Sri
Kumar Pushkar, IFS, Director (IT), BMTC and Sri Shekar, IFS, National Bamboo
Mission, Bengaluru delivered speeches.
MGIRED initiated an innovative 'Plant a Bamboo' drive titled “Bamboo Bucket
Challenge” inspired by Ice Bucket Challenge and Rice Bucket Challenge to promote
wide spread planting of bamboo. To neutralize the carbon footprint of each individual,
it is estimated that one should plant at least 4 bamboos.
3.3.2 Roof top solar Photovoltaic power systems (RTPVS) and net energy metering
MGIRED Organized the One day workshop for general public / organizations to
promote and create awareness about SRTPVS for generation of power and feed the
excess power generated to the grid and earn good returns.
Sri. Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED, MGIRED, the enthusiast behind organizing
this programme welcomed the gathering. Chief Guest, Shri T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, IAS,
ACS, RD&PR Dept., GoK inaugurated the workshop and called for using the vacant
roof tops for SPV systems which will eventually reduce the fossil fuel usage and
termed this scheme as a win-win situation. Sri. G.V. Balaram, MD, KREDL spoke
about pros and cons of subsidy schemes for SRTPVS.

lights and a fan totally off grid. The same was extended to 30 more branches which are
doing extremely well even today. The Bank was impressed with the success and
extended the project to over 370 branches which are now totally grid free and have
overcome the shutdown of systems during frequent power cuts in rural areas.
Dr. Siddarth Bhat, Addl. Director CPRI, delivered a talk on technologies issues and
challenges of SRTPVS. Sri. Lakshmipathi L., DGM, BESCOM explained the
procedure for availing Net metering scheme. Sri. Manjunath, Deputy Director,
KERC, enlightened the gathering about the tariff structure for SRTPVS. Mrs.
Vidyarani, AGM, KREDL provided information for availing subsidies under MNRE
funded schemes. Representatives, stakeholders from the solar industry exhibited and
shared information on their products.

3.3.3 Improved Cook stoves
One day skill development workshop on Smokeless Sarala Stove and construction of
smokeless household stoves was organised for SHG women on 25.02.2015 at
Kollihatti village, Aralaguppe Gram Panchayat, Tiptur Taluk, Tumkur District by
MGIRED in association with TIDE. This programme was attended by 76 women
from different Self help groups.
As part of the workshop 4 women entrepreneurs were trained in stove construction
and about 5 (4 at Kollihatti and 1 at Aralaguppe) Smokeless Sarala Stoves were
constructed. Each beneficiary contributed bricks and soil/mud for stove construction.

3.3.4 Home Biogas
Institute organized a one day workshop on Home Composting & Home Biogas for
Bengalureans. About 80 citizens participated. The objective of workshop was to
encourage participants to take up Home Composting / Home Biogas, so that the
environment is protected and also they earn some income from the gas & the compost
generated. The compost can be used for kitchen gardening.
Sri Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED, MGIRED, welcomed the gathering. Shri.
Parameshwaraiah, Chief Engineer, BBMP, Yelahanka Zone inaugurated the
workshop and explained how 80% of the waste can be treated and disposed safely.

3.4 Celebration of National/Internationally important days
3.4.1 World Environment Day
World Environment Day was celebrated on 05th June 2014 by MGIRED at its
campus.
Inaugural & Welcome address was delivered by Sri. Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF &
ED, MGIRED. Chief Guest Dr. T.V. Ramachandra, Co-ordinator, Energy & Wetlands
Research Group, Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, stressed on the need for
environment protection. Smt. Nupur Tandon of Pro-Waste, Bengaluru spoke about the
need for segregation of dry and wet waste and re-use of waste. School Children from
Presidency School, Nandini Layout & Yelahanka Government School participated
and planted saplings on the occasion.

3.4.2 International Biodiesel day
Institute organized Trainers' training programme for school teachers on August 11th,
2014. The training was imparted on the following subjects: Conservation of Forests
and natural resources (Sri. Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF and ED, MGIRED); Biofuels
and Biodiesel (Sri Basawaraj, Technical Officer, Karnataka State Biofuel
Development Board); Renewable Energy and EC (Sri Ram Singh Verma, Senior
Faculty [SF], MGIRED); Smokeless Chullas (Smt. Pramila Pujari, Technology
Information Design Endeavours [TIDE]); Environment Protection and
conceptualization of students projects (Dr. Shobha Anand, SF, MGIRED); RWH (Sri.
S. Vishwanath, Trustee, Biome Environmental Solutions Pvt. Ltd.) and Biogas and 3
R's of solid waste management (Sri. Ravi Kumar, Proprietor, Green Technologies).
3.4.3 Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas
MGIRED celebrated Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas to commemorate the Birth
anniversary of former Prime Minister Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi who had the vision of
providing electricity to all rural and remote areas of the country, particularly with new
and renewable energy sources.
To create awareness on renewable energy, competitions were held on renewable
energy crossword, EC puzzle and pick and speak for primary and high school students
on 18thAugust. On 20th August, awareness programme with lectures on Renewable
Energy, EC, Biofuels, Environment Protection and Forest Conservation were
delivered followed by prize distribution. Solar table lamps and solar torches were
aptly chosen as prizes, to promote and encourage solar energy among students.

3.4.4 Wild Life Week
MGIRED organized a one day Trainers' Training programme for School and College
teachers, HM's, BEO's and students, on wildlife conservation and management,
ecotourism, solid waste management and RWH.
The Chief Guest Sri. Vinay Luthra, IFS, PCCF (Wild Life) spoke about wildlife
management, Sri. Manoj Kumar, IFS, Conservator of Forests & Additional Director,
Food & Civil Supplies Dept., Bengaluru spoke about Nature Inspires, Sri R.K. Singh,
IFS, APCCF and the Member Secretary to Karnataka Biodiversity Board spoke about
Ecotourism. A short documentary on importance of protecting Butterflies was
screened and information on the Wildlife Crimes Wing of Forest Department was
shared with the participants to help in controlling the illegal wildlife trade. There were
also lectures on Solid waste management by Sri Ravikumar, Greentech Pvt. Ltd., EC

and Energy audit by Sri Ram Singh Verma, SF, MGIRED and RWH by Sri. A. R.
Shivakumar, KSCST.
During the programme Chief Guest Sri Vinay Luthra, IFS, PCCF (WL) launched the
blog on the Green initiatives of MGIRED (http://mgiredgreeninitiatives.blogspot.in).
It contains information on activities of MGIRED to promote RE, EC, EP such as RVEP
with RE, SWM, construction and deployment of smokeless chullas in and around
wildlife sanctuaries, walk through energy assessment, creation of school energy clubs,
bamboo bucket challenge, Solar Roof Top Photo Voltaic Systems (SRTPVS), Biogas,
etc. Public can interact with MGIRED through this blog for further information.
3.4.5 International Women's Day
Institute celebrated International Women's Day on 10th March.
The event was organized to create awareness on various issues related to Environment
& Energy with women perspective. About 92 Students from Sheshadripuram Degree
College, Yelahanka and Savitha Maharshi Education College, Sanjay Nagar
participated in the programme.
The event was inaugurated by Sri Punati Sridhar, IFS, APCCF & ED of MGIRED,
followed by brief presentation on status of women in India by Smt H.R. Leelavathi, SF,
MGIRED. The following subjects were covered during the programme: “An insight
into Laws framed for Women Protection” by – Smt Renukadevi Deshpande, Legal
consultant; 24 hrs Legal Service clinic, Karnataka State Legal Service Authority. Dr
Siddappa Setty, spoke on role of women in Environment protection; Smt. Svati

Bhogle, CEO, TIDE spoke on women in the field of EC & Energy Efficiency. Sri
Krishna Sharma, SF, MGIRED presented case studies of women entrepreneurs in the
field of RE.
3.4.6 World Forestry Day
Institute organized World Forestry day on March 24th, to create public awareness
about the importance of forests in balancing life cycles and need for their protection.
B.Ed and BE Students from various colleges of Bengaluru City had attended the
programme. The programme was addressed by the Chief Guest Sri. A.K. Verma, IFS,
Retd. PCCF, Karnataka Forest Department (KFD). Eminent Speakers from Forest and
allied departments enlightened the audience about the importance of forests and its
need for survival of the humanity.

3.6 Special Events
3.6.1 Independence Day
Executive Director addressed the faculty and staff of MGIRED. He advocated
secularism and instilled spirit in them to work hard and contribute to Nation building.
He emphasized that a country can prosper only if each one of us does our duties with
commitment, sincerity and hard work. Just like each brick having a role in a building
construction, each one of us has a role to play in Nation building.

3.6.2 Gandhi Jayanti
MGIRED has taken an initiative to implement the vision of our Hon'ble Prime
Minister by organizing the programme on Swachha Bharat Abhiyana on October 2nd,
the birth anniversary of our Rashtrapitha Mahatma Gandhi by involving local
residents. APCCF & ED of the Institute Sri. Punati Sridhar, IFS declared open an e-
waste collection centre for scientific disposal of e-waste through authorized recyclers.
He also administered the Cleanliness pledge to all the participants.
Chief Guest, Mrs Almitra H. Patel, Member of Supreme Court Committee for Solid
Waste Management, highlighted the lack of environmental ethics which lead to most

of the problems and stressed on the need for cultivating good practices and modifying
life style such as using recyclable products, avoiding and reducing non-recyclables and
reduction of waste generation. Mrs. Nupur Tandon, from Pro-waste Concepts Pvt. Ltd.,
emphasized on segregation of solid waste.
3.6.3 Republic Day
Executive Director addressed and said : Democracy is the best form of governance for
any country. However, it is essential that each one of us knows the value of vote and the
same is not sold. By electing suitable, efficient, honest and committed representatives,
it will be possible to provide all basic infrastructure, facilities needed by public for their
welfare and progress.
Sri Praveen Kumar S.P., Senior Faculty, addressed and said: Democracy is by the
people of the people and for the people. The intent of democracy is achieved when

citizens volunteer and contribute for the welfare of the society. People should love
their country, by doing this they will start to own responsibility.
3.7 Internship programmes
MGIRED is desirous of accommodating Under graduate and Post graduate students for
internships irrespective of their discipline of study, provided the students have inclination to
work on the subjects falling within the ambit of scope of MGIRED.
During 2014-15, 12 students from Dept of Environmental Science, St. Joseph's Degree
College interned for a period of one week during October 2014. Students basically learnt
Biofuel production and biogas generation.
Sandeep Prakash, M.Sc. Electronics, School of Advanced Sciences, VIT University,
Vellore, Tamil Nadu is working on dissertation where he is aspiring to fabricate & develop
Hybrid Solar cycle for physically challenged under the guidance of Sri. Punati Sridhar, IFS,
APCCF & Executive Director, MGIRED; Sri. Praveen Kumar S.P., Senior Faculty Grade-I,
MGIRED & Dr. Shobha Anand Reddy, Senior Faculty Grade-I, MGIRED
3.8 Nature Camp
MGIRED organized nature camp on 10.12.2014 at Ramakrishna Mission Ashram,
Shivanalli to Students of Parikrama Humanity Foundation. The students were shown the
semi evergreen like forests developed by the Ashram and were explained about various tree
species, their importance and uses. An artificially created water hole inside the campus
served to be a major attraction for wild animals and birds. Students were also taken to
Bannerghatta Zoological Garden to educate on ex-situ conservation of wild animals. They
were briefed about food habits, habitats and features of individual animal by zoo instructors.
