Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) :

• Established in 1970• Works to prevent work-related injuries and

death• Aims to create a better work environment

by promoting safety

MSDS (cont’d.)

• MSDS– Required by OSHA– Must be provided when hazardous substance

is purchased– Law requires copies be kept available for use

by person using the substance• Read each MSDS before handling or

using hazardous materials

Classification of Hazardous Materials

• Hazardous material– Any material capable of causing physical

harm or illness• Department of Transportation (DOT)

– Regulates the transportation of hazardous materials

– Determines which materials are hazardous

• Categories of hazardous materials• DOT specifies packaging for transport• Based on material classification• Packing group I: high danger• Packing group II: moderate danger• Packing group III: low danger• Guidelines for labeling anNined marking

• Chemicals considered to be nonthreatening :

• Could be hazardous under specific circumstances

• Reactions between two chemicals could prove fatal

• Guidelines for chemical storage• Maintain chemicals per MSDS requirements• Ensure containers are labeled in accordance

with OSHA• Close chemical containers when not in use• Use secondary containment such as acid

carriers when transporting hazardous liquids

• Guidelines for flammable and combustible liquids :

• Store in a metal container designed for flammable and combustible liquids

• Store containers in a flammable storage cabinet– Cabinets should be properly vented to the

outside of the building

Disposing of Hazardous Materials

• Federal law regulates disposal method for hazardous materials

• Identify person responsible for collecting hazardous materials

• Waste containers should be clearly labeled with contents– Containers must be safe and non-leaking

• Reduce amounts of hazardous waste by:• Purchasing only amounts needed• Using the material for intended purposes

only• Transferring spare product to someone

else with legitimate need
