The Northeast has few natural resources.- (compared to other regions)
- The Appalachian Mountains- thin, rocky soils and steep
hills (rugged)- make some parts of the Northeast a challenge forfarmers
Few minerals- except for Pennsylvania (rich in coal)

Water- one major resource that has turned the Northeast into a center of trade, commerce, and industry.

A Leader in Industry Northeast Rivers
- the many rivers of the Northeast- including the Connecticut and the Hudson- have provided power used for machinery.
Precipitation- combined with the hilly terrain- keeps the rivers of the region flowing.- water wheels convert water power into machine power
