CAR CRUZThe Car Cruz season was a complete success thanks to the participation of Mother Nature, the many volunteers and, of course, the car enthusiasts. Thanks to everyone who took part every Wednesday, whatever part that may have been.

MONDAY GOLFWe have golfed at 58 different courses since 2013 and this year the weather has treated us well. If you are interested in golfing in a scrambles format, contact me and I’ll put you on the weekly e-mail list. We will likely golf all through October and possibly beyond, depending on the weather.

SPORTMAN’S RAFFLEThis is the single biggest fundraiser we have and it is an even split between the VFW and VVA. We’re nearing the finish line. Have you done your part ? There is always the option of buying a few yourself. PLEASE HELP YOUR CHAPTER AND POST.

KOKOMOIf you wanted to witness the culmination and celebration of the Chapter’s annual accomplishments, you’ll have to wait until September 2016. We had a great time and we also missed you.

R & R Another memorable time in my 1967-68 Vietnam tour was my R & R (rest and recuperation) to Sydney, Australia in February, 1968 while the TET offensive was just a couple of weeks after kickoff. I had waited 8 months into my tour to get Sydney, one of the 7 day R & R’s and recommended by the Company XO. Somehow I can't remember the exact date but it started around the 20th of February. I got a ride to Camp Alpha at Tan Son Nhut airport Saigon where departure begins. My flight was on a civilian Pan Am DC-whatever for

about 8-10 hours, I think. I do not remember other than they served us two full meals aboard the flight: filet mignon for dinner and scrambled eggs and ham for breakfast. The stewardesses (not yet flight attendants) were American and had the G.I.’s ogling. I had $600 in my pocket. I was not about to run out of money while in Australia.

We landed in Sydney and were ushered to an indoctrination center, where we were briefed about local social nuances (e.g., girls were referred to as Sheila's....don't ask me). Change out of your uniform ASAP. Don't even think about driving a vehicle, i.e., opposite side of the road. There were 4 or 5 different burrough like sections of the city. Two I remember were King's Cross and Bronte....anyone remember the rest? I don't recall how we got assigned our hotel but mine was the Charles Hotel in Bronte. My room for six nights was $54 or $9 a night. The U.S. dollar was worth $.89 in Australian currency so round it off and say I paid $10 a night for my hotel room.

On the cab ride to the hotel, I asked the cab driver if he knew of a dry cleaner because my civvies that I had shipped from home were a bit musty after sitting in a metal container in Di An for a month. He said he would take them to the dry cleaner and deliver the clothes to the hotel after they were cleaned ...incredibly friendly and accommodating !

Naturally, after checking in, the first thing we did was walk into the hotel pub to have a beer in the early afternoon. They had different sizes of draft beer, two of which were called a “middy”, and a “schooner”, the only two I recall. If it was in a container, it was almost invariably a can, not a bottle. Don’t bother asking for a Bud or Miller either. Ain’t gonna happen. There were 4 or 5 of us G.I.’s sitting at the table when the waiter came over with a bottle of champagne. He said a gentleman customer bought it. We asked that the fellow join us. Not knowing who he was, he remained unknown. Shortly thereafter came another bottle of champagne from the same guy. It came from the same Australian who remained anonymous and commented through the waiter that he “appreciated the job we were doing” and to “have a good time”.

3At a table in the bar sat a guy and his girlfriend. The guy got up to use the restroom or make a phone call...I don’t recall. Anyway, I looked over to his girlfriend and she returned my glance with a big wink. I thought “Wow, these people are really friendly”.

Room service, a real bed, running water hot or cold, flush toilet, sleeping in til noon...how much better could it get ? I walked down to the beach which was just a few blocks away and marveled at how clean everything looked. Being in the southern hemisphere, it was the tail end of summer in Australia and the temperatures were perfect.

While in a nightclub called a discotheque (not really caught on in the U.S. until years later) with numbered large light bulbs, there were phones on the table that enabled you to dial another table number anonymously and talk. Seemed kind of childish but the place was jammed. The waitress with a thick Russian accent came over to take our order. There were four of us, two G.I.’s and two Australians, sitting at the table. When the waitress asked us for our order, I asked for a bottle of beer....remember my remark about containered beer?...just to start a give and take conversation. Surprisingly she asked “what brand” ? I replied “surprise me”. She returned to the table with what looked like a wine sized bottle of a beer I had never heard of. She poured my glass full and she said the price was 75 cents. I gave her a dollar and when she started reaching for the change, I said “keep the change”. Every few minutes she was back at the table refilling my glass. One of the Australian guys remarked “You might do that back home; don’t get that shit started here”. Last time I checked, to this day, I believe that everyday tipping is optional in Australia.

I remember entering a multiple floored complex that had a night club on one floor, restaurant on another, casino on another, bar on another. An Aussie girl I met accidentally spilled some beer on her outfit and remarked “I got some bloody grog on me frock”. Entertaining it was.

I Rested & Recuperated my brains out and after 6 nights in Sydney, when all was said and done, I still had $350 of the $600 left and it was time to return

to Vietnam. I would be lying if I said the thought of not getting on that plane didn’t enter my mind. Where would I go? Sweden came to mind but how to get there? I dismissed the thought and got on that damn plane back to the shithole. I had 120+ days until DEROS and back to the World.

I made it !

I’ll see you at the October meeting. It’s a great time to be a Veteran

Membership We lost a good friend and long-time chapter member this past month. Bill Boudreau passed away on September 23rd. Bill was a past president, secretary and color guard member. Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife Mary and their family. Ironically many of us just saw Bill in Kokomo the previous weekend. We had 4 applications for membership this past month. Dale Roeseler and Thomas Fedewa, both Navy, and John Stern, Air Force, have joined the chapter. John’s wife, Lucy, has joined our associates. Welcome Dale, Tom, John and Lucy to Chapter 528. Our current membership stands at 268 individual and 75 associate members. Of these we have 173 life VVA and 26 life AVVA members. Lapsed Members: As of September 22, 2015 the following individuals have not renewed their membership: VVA: Robert Vanderhoff AVVA: Patrick Colbeck, Jill Hives, Stephen Hives, Dropped From Roster: Ron Wroblewski, Mike Sherry October VVA Renewals: Ralph Auge, Tim Curtis, Wally Dixon, Donald Green, Bill Petrere, David Schisler, Rodney Tanner October AVVA Renewals: Barbara Arnett, Tom Arnett, Patty Bielskis, William Brisbois, Todd Busick, Tom GuditisIf you have already renewed thank you. If you have not, please do so before the end of the month to keep your membership current.

Life Membership From now till the end of the year you can get a lifetime VVA membership for only $100, regardless of age. This applies to all new and current members. AVVA members will also be able to take advantage of this offer in November and December. I will keep

repeating this message for the rest of the year because it such a good deal.

Chapter Raffle Congratulations go to Mike Dicker. Mike is the latest winner of the chapter raffle and will receive a life membership. There will be another drawing at the November meeting.

Fall Festival This year’s Fall Festival was our first without corn on the cob and it was a good thing because of the cool, rainy and windy weather on Friday and Saturday. Attendance was way down on those days although Sunday was well attended. We would have had a lot of corn left over. Without the expenses associated with corn we did pretty well just on pop, water, product sales and working in the beer tent. We made a profit of $1,380 and as an added bonus we sold 60 sportsman’s raffle tickets. A lot of people missed the corn but doing away with it was a smart decision.

Kokomo Vietnam Veterans ReunionBack from Kokomo and I will be going back in only 358 days. You have got to go once to experience the feeling of being what veterans really are. It’s a brotherhood beyond any explanation. We have a family there. You don't have to worry about spending money on food, one group gives breakfast, lunch, and dinner for free. I take a collection of can tabs there because they go to the Veterans Hospital. We got to see at least 7 members of the chapter that do not live in Michigan but they are there each year.

VFW LoungeYou can come and join us in our lounge. We have many things to offer, karaoke, euchre, dance, sliders, tacos, free pool, and our newest additions of professional horse shoe pits. We will also have a band on the 2nd and 4th Friday in October. If there is a good turnout for the band, we could have them on a regular basis. Any questions? Stop by or call (734) 459-6700.

"Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he

prayed" (Mark 1:35-36).

How do you get refueled? When our cars run low on fuel, we simply drop by the local filling station to get more fuel. When our bodies are hungry, we feed them. How do we refuel our spiritual lives? We can learn from the example Jesus modeled in His life.In the New Testament we see that Jesus had a very demanding schedule. He traveled from town to town, often walking many miles between the towns. He spent a lot of time with people. As a speaker and teacher I can tell you that it is very draining to minister for extended periods. Your body and your spirit become fatigued.

The day before the above scripture was recorded, Jesus had a full day of ministry healing the sick, delivering people from demons and walking to different cities (Mark 1:29-37). The following day it says Jesus got up before the sun rose and went to pray. The disciples were wondering where He was. When Jesus was on earth, He was fully man. Everything He did was based upon receiving specific directions and power from His father to do them. He was not operating as God, but as a human being with the same limitations you and I have. So, Jesus knew one of the key ways to refuel His mind, body and spirit was by spending time in prayer to His Heavenly Father.

This is a critical discipline for every follower of Jesus if you expect to have power and victory in your Christian walk. We each need to find a solitary place to focus upon the Lord, His Word and His input for our lives.

If this is not a part of your daily experience, why not start tomorrow with a few minutes of focused time of reading and prayer. You will be encouraged with

Getting RefueledTGIF Today God Is First

the new spiritual focus you will have by making this a priority.-----------------------------------------------------------------Chaplain’s notes: I am using the above article because I know the article is “right on” about being refueled. However, for me it is so difficult to leave the mass media world, and find a place of silence to zero in on God. It is difficult for me (and I’m sure with you as well) to be silent and instead to switch on my “listening mode” to hear what God is attempting to tell me. Yet, I have experienced this “refueling” of my mind and spirit when I can spend time praying and reading His Word.

Prayers for the family of a past president of 528, Bill Boudreau and his sudden death, especially since many of us at the Kokomo Reunion spoke with him and gave him a hug a few weeks ago. Prayers for Joe Agius’ wife, Dayle, and her recovery from gall bladder issues. Also for Ken Winkler and his long battle with brain cancer. Ken is keeping a very positive attitude!

William G. Boudreau “Bill”Aug. 16, 1948 - Sep. 23, 2015

Bill Boudreau has been a dear friend of mine ever since I met him at a Snow Elementary School Staff Christmas Party back in December 1988. My wife Cheryl knew Bill ever since they attended Kindergarten in Dearborn. Cheryl also knew Bill’s wife Mary because Mary also attended Edsel Ford High School and she taught with Cheryl at Snow Elementary School.

Bill and I became instant friends. I found out about his love for history – especially military history. Bill had items from the French and Indian War through the Vietnam War. Bill had one of the largest personal collections of military memorabilia – especially uniforms and clothes. He was also very involved in reenactment battles of the Civil War and Bill was even in several movies either dressing up as a Confederate or a Union soldier. Bill loved doing this with his buddy and VVA member Gary Pritchard. I enjoyed hearing stories about movie stars that Bill met while shooting the movie.

I taught history for nearly 36 years but I found out that Bill knew more about the wars in U.S. history than me and knew even more than any park ranger at Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper’s Ferry. Bill, Dean Bell and I spent a few days at several of the Civil War battlefields and we were amazed at Bill’s knowledge when we visited these places. Even the park rangers listened to the stories that Bill loved telling.

Bill retired from General Motors and then became a substitute teacher for Dearborn Schools. I truly believed Bill should have been a full-time history teacher during his career. I invited Bill to present his knowledge on the Civil War with my 8th grade students at Seitz Junior High School in Riverview, MI. He stayed the entire day dressed up in a Union uniform - teaching two classes at a time in our school’s library. He had the attention of every single student all day long. His hand’s on exhibit was a super hit! I used many of the stories that Bill told as part of my lecture every time I got to the period of the Civil War in my classroom.

Bill became one of my best fishing buddies. We tried to catch every walleye, perch and bass in the Detroit River and Lake Erie. Bill, Dean Bell, Eric Meyer (a fishing buddy) and I even tried to catch every King Salmon that came into the Manistee River during our late September fishing escapades. It was Bill who introduced Dean Bell and myself to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 back in January of 2002.

During his membership Bill served as our President and Secretary and served as our chapter’s representative to Michigan State Council and 2nd Vice President of VVA of Michigan. He also was a co-chair for the Wayne County Fishing Derby. Bill was responsible for the idea of placing service photos from our members and then taking the photos to create photo boards which are still in our display cases.

During his time as our chapter’s President (2007-2008), Bill “volunteered” me to become our Chapter’s Webmaster and the Editor of Homefront Newsletter. Driving with Bill in the car from Dearborn to our monthly VVA meetings was a blast. Bill could talk non-stop on just about anything. I also had great times helping Bill with his Apple Computer nearly every week and creating web pages for him and his youngest son Jamison.

Bill was a valuable member of the VVA Michigan State Product Sales Team. I joined this crew for about 3 years. Bill loved working with John Riling’s Crew: Moe, Ray, Ron, Phil, Mary, Debbie, Norma, Debbie and myself. He enjoyed telling stories to every customer.

I’m pretty sure most people knew Bill loved the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and Michigan Football. We watched great victories and terrible defeats over the years. Bill loved all types of music. He also knew all the words to hundreds of songs including nearly all of the songs of The Beatles. I will truly miss one of my very best friends!

Sincerely, Tom Brown
