TRANSCRIPT

  • 1. Medical Procedures of the Heart Alexandra Becker Medical Terminology, BIO120-WW5 Presentation 5K

2. Doppler Ultrasound

  • Doppler Ultrasonography:Measurement of soundwave echos as they bounce off tissues and organs to produce an image.

3. Function

  • In the cardiovascular system, the Doppler Ultrasound is used to measure the velocity of blood moving through blood vessels to look for blood clots and blood vessel obstructions.

4. Doppler Ultrasound of aclogged artery 5. Cardiac Scanning

  • Cardiac Scanning: A patient is given a shot intravenously of radioactive thallium in order to visualize the heart using scanning equipment. Thallium (TI) is a metallic chemical element that resembles tin but discolors when exposed to air. Thallium is highly toxic and was used in rat poisons and insecticides. Its use has been cut back or eliminated in many countries because of its nonselective toxicity.

6. Function

  • Cardiac Scanning functions best for detecting and determining myocardial damage. (my/o = muscle; cardial = pertaining to the heart)

7. Cardiac Scan of the Heart 8. Stress Testing

  • Stress Test: The patient is placed on exercise equipment (usually a treadmill or a bicycle) and is then subjected to increasing levels of physical activity. An electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG) scans an image of the heart and records oxygen levels in the heart while the patient exercises. (electr/o = electricity; cardi/o = heart;-gram = record).

9. Function

  • To evaluate cardiovascular fitness.
