Science Chapter 43rd GradeMrs. Drye/Resource3-12-2017LIVING THINGS

Mammal Life

Some mammals like kangaroos are called marsupials. They carry their babies in their pouches after they are born. There are other marsupials such as opossums, wallabies and koalas.

Koala mom and baby

Humans are mammals because they give milk To their babies, but humans dont carry their babies in a pouch. There are other things mammals have in common: breath air, have hair and more. Look at this video.

Classification of Living ThingsYou can classify (sort) living things such as mammals in different categories. Two main categories are vertebrate and invertebrate. Vertebrates have a spine or backbone. People are vertebrates. Dogs, fish, birds and snakes too!

Invertebrates are the opposite. No backbone: like snails, spiders and worms!

See the bones!?Click each link for a video explanation. vertebrate invertebrate

Other Types of ClassificationsAnimals can also be put in or sorted in categories based on how they act (behavior or character traits). For example, there are animals that howl such as dogs, wolves and coyotes. That is their behavior. Other character traits are active (lots of jumping around like a rabbit), or slow (like a turtle) or are great climbers (like the sloth).

slowCircle the trait for each animal.Right click anywhere on the screen, choose Pointer Options then use the Pen to circle the correct answer. To reveal the answer, click the Esc button and then left click the mouse.howlsactiveclimberhowlsslowclimberactive

How Are Babies Like Their Parents? The scientific word for babies is offspring. There are ways they are the same and ways they are different. Lets look at a wolf and its offspring.SAMEDIFFERENTBoth baby and parent have fur.Pup fur very soft; parent fur more firm. Both baby and parent have teeth.Pup teeth are small; parent teeth are large. Both eat meat.Pups dont know how to hunt for food.

SAMEDIFFERENTThey start small and get bigger.Plants start from seeds. Both breathe air.People have lungs. Both need water.People drink through their mouths.

Now lets look at plants and animals.

Inherited and Learned BehaviorsSome things animals do are inherited or based on instinct, which means they are born with these behaviors. What does a bird do when it is hungry? What do bears do in the winter? What do cats do when they are afraid?

Some things animals learn from their parents. That, of course, is a learned behavior. Who taught you to brush your teeth? Click the speaker to hear the answer.

Migrating AnimalsWhat does the word migrate mean?Migrate means to move from one place to another.

Give an example of an animal that migrates.Birds fly south for the winter.

Why does this animal migrate? The bird needs warm weather to survive and find food.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Life Cycle of Living ThingsLastly all living things go through a life cycle: They are born. They grow up.They become adults. They reproduce (make babies). They grow old and die.Let us look at this video...

All living things change. That change is called metamorphosis.1.2.3.4.5.6.TRY THIS: Take seeds and wrap them in a wet paper towel. Continue with the video.
