Rubens• Studied the Italian masters, Michelangelo,

Titian, Caravaggio and mixed them all together

• Patrons were Medici and Charles I of England

• Permanent court painter to Spanish governors in Flanders

• Amicable, friendly & well liked

• Studied statues of Hellenistic sculpture

Rembrandt

• Use of light hallmark of his style

• Inspired by Caravaggio but not as “abrupt”

• Shows mood of his subjects

• Had several self portraits showing him as assertive

Vermeer• Yes, he painted the Girl with the Pearl Earring

• Renown for his interiors, middle class dwellings with men, women, children doing household chores

• View of his paintings makes us feel like we are peeking or evesdropping

• Used the Camera obscura ( a drawing device meaning “dark room”, preceeded the development of the camera)
