6. Click OK to apply the setting to the all folders. In the chapter_02 file list, scroll down toview the different extensions for each file type. With the bottom of the chapter_02 file listdisplayed, compare your screen with Figure 3.

4. Click Organize, and then click Folder and search options. In the Folder Options dialogbox, click the View tab.

5. Under Advanced settings, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.Compare your screen with Figure 2.

By default, when Windows 7 recognizes the file type, it hides its file extension. Withthe Hide extensions for known file types option cleared, the file extensions will displayfor all files.

7. Create a Full-screen Snip. Copy the snip, and then Close the markup windowwithout saving the changes.

8. Start WordPad, and type your first and last name. Add a new line, and then typeWindows 7 Chapter 2 More Skills 11

9. Click Save , and then in the Save As dialog box, navigate to your Windows 7 Chapter 2folder. In the File name box, type Lastname_Firstname_w7_02_Extensions.rtf Compareyour screen with Figure 4.

When file extensions are no longer hidden, the extensions display in the Save As andOpen dialog boxes. Here, the WordPad file is assigned the .rtf file extension. An .rtf orRich Text Format file supports basic word processing tasks and formatting and can beopened with many different word processing programs.

Because .rtf files are designed to work with many different word processing programs,the icon that displays for this file may be different on your computer. When you haveMicrosoft Office installed on your computer, the Word icon will typically display foreach .rtf file. If not, the WordPad icon will be assigned to your .rtf files.

10. In the Save As dialog box, click Save. Add a new line, and then Paste the snip.Save the file. If you are printing your work, print the WordPad document.

11. Exit WordPad. In Windows Explorer, click Organize, and then click Folder andsearch options. In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab.

12. Under Advanced settings, select the Hide extensions for known file types checkbox, and then click OK.

13. In the chapter_02 file list, right-click a blank area, point to Group by, and thenclick (None). Close Windows Explorer.

14. Submit your printout or WordPad file as directed by your instructor.
