The Happy Prince

'Far away,' continued the statue in a low musical voice, 'far away in a little

street, there is a poorhouse. One of the windows is open, and through it I

can see a woman sitting at a table. Her face is thin and worn, and she has

rough, red hands, all pricked by the needle, for she is a seamstress. She is

embroidering passion flowers on a satin gown for the loveliest of the Queen's

maids of honour to wear at the next Court-ball. In a bed, in the corner of

the room, her little boy is lying ill. He has fever and asking for oranges. His

mother has nothing to give him but river water, so he is crying. Swallow,

Swallow, little Swallow, won't you take the ruby out of my word hilt and give

it to her? My feet are stuck to this pedestal and I cannot move.'

'My friends wait for me in Egypt,' said the Swallow. 'They are flying up and

down the Nile and talking to the large lotus flowers. Soon they will go to sleep

in the tomb of the great King. The King is there himself in his painted coffin.'

always throwing stones at me. They never hit me, of course - we swallows

fly far too well for that - but still, it was a mark of disrespect.'

A Tragic Story

There lived a sage in days of yore,

And he a handsome pigtail wore;

But wondered much and sorrowed more,

Because it hung behind him.

He mused upon this curious case,

And swore he'd change the pigtail's place,

And have it hanging at his face,

Not dangling behind him.

Says he, 'The mystery I've found -

Says he, 'The mystery I've found!

I'll turn me round,' - he turned him round;

Then round and round, and out and in,

All day the puzzled sage did spin;

In vain - it mattered not a pin -

The pigtail hung behind him.

And though his efforts never slack,

And though he twist and twirl, and tack,

Alas! Still faithful to his back,

The pigtail hangs behind him.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born in 1807 in Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln.

When Abe was just nine years old, his mother died and his sister Sarah took

care of him until his father remarried. Lincoln had less than a year of

schooling. The family owned a Bible and he spent many hours reading it.

By the time he was 17, he knew he wanted to be a lawyer. When he was

21 years old he moved to Illinois and spent a year laboring on a farm. When

he was a shopkeeper he tried to be honest and fair. He still wanted to be a

lawyer. In 1836 he passed the test and became a lawyer. It was during this

time he was elected to the Illinois legislature by the Whig party. He became

good at debating and public speaking. Lincoln was Inaugurated president in

March of 1861. Five weeks later the Civil War began. Lincoln wanted the

United States to remain one nation. Two years later, President Lincoln wrote:

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either

to save or to destroy slavery.” He was able to realize both of his goals.

In 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in the

Southern states, and the country was able to remain a united nation.

Eventually all the slaves in the United States became free. On April 14,

1865 President Lincoln and Mrs. Lincoln were attending a play at Ford's

Theater in Washington D.C. While there he was assassinated and died nine

hours later. The events that occurred during the time that Abraham Lincoln

was president included the attack on Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil

War (1861 -1863), the Emancipation Proclamation (1863), the Conscription

Act (1863) and the Gettysburg Address (1863).

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

During his youth, he experienced strong influences that had a profound effect

on his later life. His grandfather and father were experts on the mechanics

of voice and elocution. Alexander's mother, who was nearly deaf, became an

accomplished pianist and inspired him to undertake big challenges. At age 12,

while playing with a friend in a grain mill, he noticed the slow process of husking

the wheat grain. He went home and built a devise with rotating paddles and nail

brushes that easily removed the husks from the grain. By age 16, Alexander

had joined his father in his work with the deaf and soon assumed full charge of

his father's London operations. In July, 1870, the family settled in Ontario,

Canada. There, he set up a workshop to continue his study of the human voice.

Graham Bell is best known for his invention of the telephone. While trying to

discover the secret to transmitting multiple messages on a single wire, Bell

heard the sound of a plucked string along some of the electrical wire. One of

Bell's assistants, Thomas A. Watson was trying to reactivate a telephone

transmitter. After hearing the sound, Bell believed he could send the sound of

a human voice over the wire. After receiving a patent on March 7, 1876, for

transmitting sound along a single wire, he successfully transmitted human

speech on March 10th. Bell's telephone patent was one of the most valuable

patents ever issued. The Bell Telephone Company was organized on July 9,

1877. On July 11, 1877, Alexander Graham Bell married Mable Hubbard.

In 1880, he established the Volta Laboratory, an experimental facility devoted

to scientific discovery. He also continued his work with the deaf, establishing

the American Association to Promote Teaching of Speech to the Deaf in 1890.

In the remaining years of his life Bell worked on a number of projects. He

devoted a lot of time to exploring flight, starting with the tetrahedral kite in

1890s. In 1907, Bell formed the Aerial Experiment Association with Glenn

Curtiss. The group developed several flying machines, including the Silver Dart.

The Silver Dart was the first powered machine flown in Canada. He later

worked on hydrofoils and set a world record for speed for this type of boat.

In January 1915, Bell was invited to make the first transcontinental phone call.

From New York, he spoke with his former associate Thomas Watson in San

Francisco. Bell died on August 2, 1922, in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia,

Canada. The entire telephone system was shut down for one minute in tribute

to his life.

A Little Princess

But Lottie was a determined little person. If Sara would not tell her where she

lived, she would find out in some other way. She started late one afternoon on a

voyage of discovery, climbing stairs she had never known the existence of, until

she reached the attic floor. There she found two doors near each other, and

opening one, she saw her beloved Sara standing upon an old table and looking out

of a window. “Sara!” she cried, “Mamma Sara!” She was aghast because the

attic was so bare and ugly. Sara turned round at the sound of her voice. What

would happen now? If Lottie began to cry and any one chanced to hear. She

jumped down from her table and ran to the child. “Don't cry and make a noise,

” she implored. “Isn't it?” gasped Lottie, and as she looked round it she bit her

lip. She was a spoiled child yet, but she was fond enough of her adopted parent

to make an effort to control herself for her sake. It was quite possible that any

place in which Sara lived might turn out to be nice. “Why isn't it, Sara?” she

almost whispered. Sara hugged her close and tried to laugh. She had a hard day

and had been staring out of the windows with hot eyes. “You can see all sorts of

things you can't see downstairs,” she said. “What sort of things?” demanded

Lottie, with the curiosity. “Chimneys—quite close to us—with smoke curling up in

wreaths and clouds and going up into the sky—and sparrows hopping about and

talking to each other just as if they were people—and other attic windows. It

all feels as high up—as if it was another world.” “Oh, let me see it!” cried Lottie.

“Lift me up!” Sara lifted her up, and they stood on the old table together and

looked out. The sparrows twittered and hopped. Two of them perched on the

chimney top nearest and quarrelled with each other fiercely until one pecked the

other and drove him away.

The owner of a missing cat is asking for help. “My baby has been missing for

over a month now, and I want him back so badly,” said Mrs. Brown, a fifty-six

-year-old woman. Mrs. Brown lives by herself in a trailer park near Clovis. She

said that Clyde, her seven year-old cat, didn't come home for dinner more than

a month ago, so she called the police. When the policeman asked her to describe

Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but

was missing half of his left ear, and was and completely white. She then told

the officer that Clyde was about a foot high. A bell went off. “Is Clyde your

child or your pet?” the officer suspiciously asked, “Well, he's my cat,” Mrs.

Brown replied. “Lady, you're supposed to report missing PERSONS, not missing

CATS,” said the irritated policeman.”Well, who can I report this to?” She asked.

“You can't. You have to ask around your neighbourhood or put up flyers,” replied

the officer. Mrs. Brown figured that a billboard would work a lot than an 8”x11”

piece of paper on a telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of

her street just off the interstate highway. The billboard had a phone number

on it. She called that number, and they told her they could blow up a picture

the day, the interstate is so full of commuters that no one moves.” They told

her if it would cost only $3,000, a month. The month has passed, but Clyde

has not appeared. Because she has almost no money in savings, Mrs. Brown

Mangroves

Many tropical and sub-tropical shores are home to a unique group of large

shrub like plants called mangroves. These plants tend to form dense, submerged

'forests 'along shorelines, thanks to their adaptive ability to survive in sea water

that's too salty for other land plants to live in. Mangroves achieve this through

salt and leaves that excrete it into the water. Mangroves make up and enhance

the ecological diversity. Their complex root systems serve as nursery habitats

for marine life as well as providing the substrate for algae, sponges and like sea

grasses, mangroves are instrumental in building sediments along shorelines and

lagoons. It might be hard to imagine their breadth if you're reading this in

northern Europe, but just imagine the following…The nation of Belize features

the highest overall percentage of forest cover of any of the Central American

countries, its mangrove cover. A 2010 satellite-based study of Belize's mangroves

by the World Wildlife Fund observed that mangrove spread over 184,548 acres,

The Wonderful musicianThere was once a wonderful musician, and he was one day walking through a

wood all alone, he said to himself, “I will bring out a good companion.”So he

fiddled so that the wood echoed. A wolf came up to him. “Oh, a wolf!” Said

the musician, “Ho, how finely you play! I must learn how to play too.” “That

is easily done,” answered the musician, “you have only to do exactly as I tell

you.” “I will obey you,” said the wolf. They came to an old oak tree, which

was cleft through the middle. “Look here,” said the musician, “if you want to

learn how to fiddle, you must put your feet in this cleft.” The wolf obeyed,

but he took up a stone and wedged both his paws that the wolf was a prisoner.

After a while he said to himself, I will bring out another companion,” and fiddled

away in the wood. This time a fox came “Oh, fox!” said the musician; the fox

said, “O musician, how finely you play! I must learn how to play too.” “That is

easily done,” said the musician, “you have only to do exactly as I tell you.”

“O musician,” answered the fox, “I will obey you.” So as they came to a footpath

with a high hedge on each side and taking hold of a hazel-branch bent it down

to the earth, and said: “Little fox, if you wish to learn something, reach your

left foot.”The fox obeyed. When the knots were fast enough he let go and the

fox, shaking and struggling, in the air. The wolf meanwhile had struggled, and

got himself out of the cleft. Full of anger he hastened after the musician to

tear him to pieces. The fox cried out, “Brother Wolf, help me! The musician

has betrayed me.” The musician had again played his fiddle and a woodcutter

with his axe under his arm, came to listen to the music. “It was a man I wanted,

and not wild animals.” And then he began to play so sweetly that the poor man's

heart was filled with joy. And there came the wolf and the fox. Then the

woodcutter raised his shining axe, and stood in front of the musician. Then the

animals ran back into the wood, and the musician, played once more to the man

THE TALE OF SAMUEL WHISKERS

By Beatrix Potter

Once upon a time there was an old cat, called Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit, who was

an anxious parent. She used to lose her kittens and they were lost always in

mischief! On baking day she determined to shut them up in a cupboard. She

caught Moppet and Mittens, but she could not find Tom. The cupboard door was

not locked, so Moppet and Mittens pushed it open and came out. They went

straight to the dough. Somebody knocked at the door, and Moppet jumped into

the flour barrel. Mittens ran away to the dairy. The visitor was Mrs. Ribby.

Mrs. Tabitha came, “Come in,” Cousin Ribby, “I'm in sad trouble I've lost my

son Thomas; I'm afraid the rats have got him.” They returned to the kitchen.

Ribby, dragged Moppet out of the flour barrel. “Oh! Mother,” said Moppet,

“there's been an old rat in the kitchen, and she's stolen some of the dough!”

They found Mittens, “Oh, Mother,” said Mittens, “There has been an old rat

in the dairy, and he's stolen a pat of butter and the rolling pin.” Ribby said,

“We must send for John Joiner at once.” When Tom Kitten saw that his mother

was going to bake, he determined to hide and fixed upon the chimney. He

climbed up. All at once he fell in the dark hole. “What do you mean by tumbling

into my bed?” said the rat. “Anna Maria,” squeaked the rat. All in a minute

she rushed upon Tom Kitten, and he was rolled up in a bundle, and tied with

string. “Anna Maria,” said the old man rat (whose name was Samuel Whiskers),

make me a kitten dumpling roly-poly pudding for my dinner.” “It requires dough,

a pat of butter, and a rolling-pin,” said Anna Maria. The rats came back and

set to work. First they smeared him with butter, and then they rolled him in the

dough and the rolling-pin went roly-poly. When all at once there began other

sounds up above and the noise of a little dog, scratching! “We are discovered

Anna Maria; let us depart at once.” There was nobody under the floor except

the rolling-pin and Tom Kitten! The cat family had quite recovered and Tom

Kitten into a hot bath to get the butter off. After that; there were no more

rats for a long time at Tabitha Twitchit's.

Read the passage and answer the questions that follows

The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean.

There lived in a certain village a poor old woman who had collected a mess of

beans, and was going to cook them. So she made a fire on her hearth, and, in

order to make it burn better, she put in a handful of straw. When the beans

began to bubble in the pot, one of them fell out and lay, never noticed, near a

straw which was already there; soon a red-hot coal jumped out of the fire and

joined the pair. The straw began first, and said, “Dear friends, how do you come

here?” The coal answered, “I jumped out of the fire by great good luck. I should

have been burned to ashes.” The bean said, “I too have come out of it with a

whole skin. I should have been cooked like my comrades.” “Luckily I managed to

slip through her fingers.” Straw said. “What had we better do now?” said the

coal. “I think,” answered the bean, “that as we have been lucky as to escape

with our lives, we will go together into foreign lands.” The proposal pleased the

two others, and they started on their travels. Soon they came to a little brook,

and as there was no bridge. The straw was struck with a good idea, and said,

"I will lay myself across, so that you can go over me as if I were a bridge!" So

the straw stretched him from one bank to the other, and the coal, quickly

trotted up to go over the newly-made bridge. When, however, she reached the

middle, and heard the water rushing past beneath her, she was stopped, and

could get no farther. So the straw began to get burnt, broke in two pieces,

and fell in the brook, and the coal slipped down, hissing as she touched the

water. The bean, who had prudently remained behind on the bank, went on

laughing so excessively that she burst and now would she certainly have been

undone forever, if a tailor on his travels had not by good luck stopped to rest

himself by the brook. He took out needle and thread and stitched her together

again. The bean thanked him, but as he had sewn her up with black stitches,

all beans since then have a black seam.
