What is QlikView?A Business Intelligence (BI) tool created by QlikTech.

Business Intelligence, according to Gartner:

An umbrella term that includes the application, infrastructure and tools, and best practices that enable access to and analysis of information to improve and optimize decisions and performance.


Traditional Business Intelligence

� Very much IT-driven;

� Works well for predefined, static reports;

� Users experience long lead times when new questions arrive that cannot be answered with the standard reports.


Business Discovery

QlikTech aims t put tools into the hands of business users, allowing them to become self-sufficient.

Termed Data Discovery by Gartner, QlikTech refers to this as Business Discovery.


Traditional BI vs Business Discovery

Traditional

IT: responsible for data preparation, governance and building all the analyses.

End user: pre-calculated reports and dashboards.


Business Discovery

IT: responsible for data preparation and governance. Help enable users create their own analyses

User: self-service analysis, create and change on the fly to target specific business challenges.

QlikView vs traditional tools� Technology: QlikView uses an in-memory

data model, allowing for fast response times and a smooth user experience; more about this later.

� Adoption path: traditional BI is often implemented top-down, QlikView often sees a bottom-up, “land and expand”, spread throughout an organization.

Explore the Movies Database application.


Technology behind QlikViewQlikView utilizes an in-memory database, which is orders of magnitude faster than disk-based systems.

Helped by two factors:

� Cheap memory and the advancement of 64 bit processors;

� Clever compression algorithms.
