Matter

Matter is the “stuff” that makes up all things and is too small to be seen with the human eye.

Anything that has mass and occupies space is matter.

Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter in an object. Ex. A bowling ball vs. a basket ball

Weight is a measurement of the gravitational force acting on an object.Ex. Dropping a bowling ball vs. a feather

Mass vs. Weight

Chemical compounds are pure substances made of atoms of different elements combined in a definite, fixed ratios.Ex. Water will have the same property no matter where it comes from.

A molecule is the smallest chemical unit of a compound that retains the composition and properties of the compound and can exist independently. Ex. 2H’s and 1O
