Prepare a simple web page– Right-click on Desktop– With Menu,

Select New Text Document Open the document and type:

– John’s website (replace “John” with your name)– Close the document, save it when asked.– Open the document again. Nothing new.

– Select Start Settings Control Panel Click Appearance and Themes Category Select Folder Options, then View tab Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types

Right Click Text Document again– Select: Rename – Change .txt to .html

Click (open) New Text Document.html Does your web page appear?

– Select: Open With Notepad– Type <b> in front of your name– Save the file and close Notepad

– Select: Open With Notepad– Hit Enter key 5 times, then type <i>– Type the title of your favorite movie– Save the file, ctrl + s is one way– Close Notepad and Click html file

HyperText Markup Language (html)

You Markup HTML documents– <b>Your Name</b>– <i>Your Movie</i>

Basic anatomy– Markup name in arrow brackets to apply– Arrow brackets with a forward slash to close– <html> apply html between tags </html>

Markup means you annotate text

HyperText Markup Language (html)

A Hyperlink is a part of what we call “HyperText”– See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext– URI Uniform Resource Identifier– Close browser & open html file with Notepad– Before <b> type: <a href=“http://www.iu.edu”>– After </b> type: </a> – Save the file, close Notepad, and Click file

Is your name underlined in blue? – Then click your Hyperlink

Upload your file to OnCourse A110 folder– Login to OnCourse and select Resources– Click Add for A110 folder– Select Browse for file– Click to highlight your file, then select Open– Click Add

Open Internet Explorer– Select: File Open– Click Open as Web Folder, then Type:– https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/~user/– Click OK if “username” (above) is your username– Login

See your file?– Now you can drag and drop files

Access your Mercury account– Select Start Menu, then:

Programs Utilities Secure Shell Client– Click Quick Connect– For Host Name: mercury.uits.indiana.edu– For User Name: your user id– Click Connect

Press the number for “bash” (if asked), then Enter. (You are picking a “shell” environment in which to operate).– Does the screen go gray and log you off?

Host name: mercury.uits.indiana.edu– At the $ prompt, type spinweb, then Enter– Select the folder icon with blue bubbles

Right Click html file on Desktop– Rename home.html

With SSH Secure File Transfer– In left window, drag home.html and drop in right window

With Browser, go to:– http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/– What do you see?
