Chapel MAY 2016

LOOKING LIKE JESUS One year has almost passed since we moved into our Excel generosity initiative and we have seen some great things happen. The parking lot has been totally resurfaced, the roof has been replaced and we are now making plans for the repurposing of a section of the building for security sake for our children and students. All of this because of the generosity of the Chapel Rock Family and our obedience to God‖s call in our lives to be generous. So as we approach that one year mark I have chosen to preach a series of sermons in May titled, “Looking Like Jesus” where we will explore the various ways that we can look more like our Savior, including the lifestyle of generosity. We will talk about subjects like worshipping God and Him alone, being obedient and sacrificial, the surrender of our hearts and resources to God and then the opportunity to celebrate His goodness to us. What a great time to refocus our spiritual eyes and “excel” for the kingdom of God. Excel. Moving to another level. Spiritual growth. Becoming more like Jesus. Join us, won‖t you? ~ Fred

DISCOVERY DAYS PRESCHOOL Discovery Days is currently accepting registrations for children 18 months through Pre-K. We strive to provide a quality preschool experience by incorporating arts and crafts, fine motor activities, large motor activities, pre-reading and pre-writing skills, music, stories and lots of fun! We are a Christian preschool that is committed to teaching the children about Jesus. For more information go to our website at www.discovery-days.org or call Carolyn Milkie at 240-2065 to request a tour.

THE STORY SO FAR. . .AND THE PLAN GOING FORWARD Greetings Chapel Rock! I wanted to take this opportunity to give you an update on our move / transition to Indianapolis and to thank you all once again for your generous reception of our family. We have pretty much gotten settled in to our home in the Chapel Hill neighborhood. The kids really like their rooms and we are very much enjoying having a big home in a wonderful neighborhood. Debbe (yes, that‖s how she spells her name, it‖s not a typo) is settling in to her new “nest” and just this past week we were talking about how our house is starting to feel like “home.” We still have several projects to do (I‖m hoping to knock out a few of them this weekend), but we‖ve settled into our new digs quite well. Thanks again to all of you helped us move and to those who gave so generously in gift cards. Between needs at home improvement stores and “meals on the go,” that was a HUGE blessing, thank you! I also want to thank you for how you‖ve received us into your hearts. I know how much love and respect you all have for Fred and Sheri and rather than dividing it for us, you‖ve multiplied it! We feel so welcomed, and it‖s such a blessing to be part of a church that is committed to caring for her pastors. It makes it a joy to go to work in the morning, and work hard! Looking forward, we will continue to follow the transition plan that the Elders have approved. I will be preaching about once a month through the next several months. There are several reasons for this: first, Fred is still the Senior Pastor, so that‖s still his primary task. Second, I came to Chapel Rock with several preexisting schedule commitments (which prevent me from being here on a Sunday) that I need to honor. Third, this gives me the luxury of time to get my hands around all the various ministries at Chapel Rock. As you‖ve seen, I‖ll play guitar with the band a few more times. I‖ll visit the Sunday Morning Life Groups, and spend some time visiting in the kids/children‖s areas on Sunday to understand them better. Beginning in September, I‖ll be in the pulpit more often and take on some more “first chair” leadership responsibilities in the church as well (more on that in a future letter!). I‖m so excited about the future of Chapel Rock! ~ Casey

MAY FOOD PANTRY REQUEST For the month of May, Chapel Rock‖s Food Pantry ministry is requesting personal care items. Suggested items are shampoo, conditioner, soap, razors, shaving cream, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and baby diapers of various sizes. Please place your donations in the black vinyl container at the DropZone in the Foyer.

The month of May in Indianapolis means graduations, a huge parade, and oh, yeah – a 500 mile race. Because of the race our service times will be modified on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 – 29. On Saturday, May 28, we will have an evening service beginning at 6 PM with no children‖s programming. On Sunday, May 29, we‖ll offer a family brunch at 9 AM with a single service beginning at 10:30 AM with children‖s programming from birth through kindergarten. Both worship services will be identical.

On Thursday, May 5, in conjunction with Mission Indy, Chapel Rock will host a National Day of Prayer event. From 7 AM - 7 PM you can stop by the Foyer and spend some time praying over our nation, our community, and our schools at various stations. You can spend some time praising God and then honestly telling Him about your failures and asking for His forgiveness. There will be prayer guides to help you and you can spend as much time as you would like. On your way to work, on your lunch break, or on your way home – stop and pray. You will be glad you did.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

Chapel Rock is funding and helping with the completion of a construction project for the Lifeline church located in Savane Carree, Haiti. This is a men‖s work trip that will involve block work, painting and other construction jobs as well as Bible study with the local Haitians. The trip leaves Monday, September 12, and returns Wednesday, September 21. We will fly to Port-a-Prince and bus to Savane Carree. There will also be men from other churches as well as Chapel Rock. The cost is $1,675 and needs to be paid in full to Lifeline Christian Missions by July 1. Please contact Rick Belcher for additional information at 850.7936 or [email protected].

Organizers are requesting a $10 donation which will go toward this summer‖s youth mission trip. Students 18 and under will need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian to participate. During the class there will be a hands-on demonstration and instruction which will include physical activity, but nothing extreme. Chapel Rock‖s Jeff Dillinger, who will be testing for his third-degree black belt, will be the main instructor for the class. Students from the karate club will have the opportunity to demonstrate moves to participants which may include take-downs. All moves will be controlled and meant to teach self-defense techniques. If you have any questions prior to the class, please contact Jeff at 372.3802.

What a wonderful response our congregation gave last year to Operation Christmas Child Year Round! We created over 180 additional shoeboxes with items donated by you! Chapel Rock members donated over 500 shoeboxes for a total of 683! We are now collecting items in our OCC bin in the DropZone in the Foyer on an ongoing basis. Specific items will be featured for donation each month. For May, we‖re requesting boys‖ and girls‖ socks and underwear to fit ages 2 – 14. However, any gift items are accepted at any time. A “packing par-ty” will take place in October to fill shoeboxes with the collected items. If you have questions about OCC, please contact Judy Heuss at [email protected].

WE SERVE BETTER TOGETHER We Serve Better Together! That statement has been ringing true here at Chapel Rock and on the west side as Life Groups have organized and conducted service projects to assist our community. And we‖re not done yet! Two projects that could really use your assistance are Adventure Fun Park (May 14) and 21st Street & Girls School Road Clean-up (May 7). Sign up sheets for these two projects along with others are located at the Group Serve table in the Foyer.

One project that was just recently completed took place at Chapelwood Elementary School. The Rodkey Life Group along with 20 additional volunteers painted the nurse‖s office and bathroom, painted the outside playground

equipment, picked up trash around the campus, organized and labeled materials for storage, and prepared CHAMPS bucks for all staff members.
