As networks continue to converge towards an all-Ethernet infrastructure, customers with legacy business services must be migrated onto these next generation networks for continued service. The Total Access® 5000

Channelized DS3 Multi-link PPP (MLPPP)

3-Port Line Module (Ch DS3 MLPPP 3-Port)

provides channelized Point-to-Point Protocol

(PPP) network connectivity to a Total Access

5000 system by way of three channelized DS3

interfaces. Each channelize interface provides

connectivity for 28 DS1 channels for a total of

84 DS1s.

Customer routers or integrated access

devices that are connected through traditional

SONET and TDM infrastructure, and that are

also using a variety of link layer protocols to

carry IP traffic over DS1, can be migrated to an

Ethernet infrastructure using the ADTRAN®

Total Access 5000. Equipped with the 3-port

channelized DS3 access module family, the

Total Access 5000 can support a variety of

protocols, such as PPP, MLPPP, Frame Relay,

and ATM/IMA, that can be implemented in a

phased approach.

The 3p Channelized DS3 MLPPP module

supports MLPPP and single-T1 PPP services.

Additionally, the 3P CH DS3 MS is supported in

redundant and non-redundant configurations

based upon the input/output module chosen

for deployment. PPP operates at the data link

layer and provides end-to-end connectivity

for devices across a point-to-point link. PPP is

made up of a suite of protocols (LCP, authen-

tication, NCP) used to establish and maintain

connectivity. The Ch DS3 MLPPP 3-Port will

forward frames from a T1 channel with PPP

encapsulation to the Ethernet uplink with a

single VLAN tag (S-tag). The Ch DS3 MLPPP

module supports the ability to bond up to

8 DS1 links on a single module for increased

subscriber bandwidth. Supporting an industry

standards-based implementation provides

operators with an ability to aggregate a

wide-variety of PPP and MLPPP customer

premises equipment.

The Channelized DS3 MLPPP 3-Port Line

Module is designed to operate with a nominal

operating voltage of –48 VDC and a minimum

operating voltage of –40 VDC. The Channelized

DS3 MLPPP 3-Port Line Module will not be

damaged by any steady state voltage between

zero VDC and 56.7 VDC magnitude.

Front-panel LEDs include power, alarms,

and status for each subscriber loop. The Line

Module supports a CLI through the craft

interface or remote telnet interface via the

Total Access 5000 System Controller Module

(SCM). More comprehensive management

is available using the Total Access Element

Management System (EMS). All provisioning

data is supported through the SCM communi-

cations link.
