Her friends did not need to know. If I saw that I could be of help to someone, then I could have a quiet talk away from other people, but I did not need to shout it from the rooftop. I had to protect my moms anonymity. Sharing our message of recovery, one alcoholic to another is what this program is all about. But how and where we share it is very important. Our stories dont belong on the front pages of the newspaper or on Facebook accompanied by our full name and pictures. They do belong in our groups, in our homes and on 12 Step calls. They belong in treatment centers and in jails. We share our message of recovery where it will do the most good. For the alcoholic who still suffers, not for our personal gain or glory. The 12 & 12 says about Tradition 11, This Tradition is a constant and practical reminder that personal ambition has no place in A.A. In it, each member becomes an active guardian of our Fellowship. Sooooo, share. But practice anonymity. Let the Traditions guide you. When in doubt, go to your sponsor, your 12 & 12 or a meeting. Anonymity in the digital age does not have to be scary. SHARING AND ANONYMITY

Anonymity seems to be the word of the day lately. Everybody is talking about it. We

seem to worry about what to do about anonymity in this digital age. It seems to me as though

the path is already cleared. The Traditions make it simple for us.

The long form of Tradition 11 says, “Our relations with the general public should be

characterized by personal anonymity. We think A.A. ought to avoid sensational advertising.

Our names and pictures as A.A. members ought not be broadcast, filmed, or publicly printed.”

And the long form of Tradition 12 says, "And finally, we of Alcoholics Anonymous

believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance. It reminds us to

place principles before personalities: that we are actually to practice a genuine humility.”

When I was newly sober I wanted the whole world to know that I had joined AA. I

told everyone without thought of anonymity, mine or anyone else's. My sponsor, who valued

her personal anonymity soon taught me about the Traditions. Thank God she did. I think the

final straw was when I made a resume and under affiliations I put "active member of AA.” I

had to peel her off the ceiling on that one.

Today, I think Facebook and other social media is our biggest concern. Don’t get me

wrong. I’m on Facebook. I like it. But I do have to cringe at the number of anonymity breaks

that I see. When someone posts a picture of a coin or a post that says "I'm sober X years today

because of AA,” that is an anonymity break. Because his or her full name and perhaps picture

is right there with the post. But if the post reads, “ I am sober X years today through God’s

grace” or something similar, that is not an anonymity break. There is no identification as an

AA member. Seems simple to me.

And then there is the family, how much is too much? I remember when I went to visit

my mom in Florida, she said, “ You don’t have to tell everyone you are an alcoholic.” I real-

ized I didn’t have the right to break her anonymity. Her friends did not need to know. If I saw

that I could be of help to someone, then I could have a quiet talk away from other people, but I

did not need to shout it from the rooftop. I had to protect my mom’s anonymity.

Sharing our message of recovery, one alcoholic to another is what this program is all

about. But how and where we share it is very important. Our stories don’t belong on the front

pages of the newspaper or on Facebook accompanied by our full name and pictures. They do

belong in our groups, in our homes and on 12 Step calls. They belong in treatment centers and

in jails. We share our message of recovery where it will do the most good. For the alcoholic

who still suffers, not for our personal gain or glory. The 12 & 12 says about Tradition 11,

“This Tradition is a constant and practical reminder that personal ambition has no place in

A.A. In it, each member becomes an active guardian of our Fellowship.”

Sooooo, share. But practice anonymity. Let the Traditions guide you. When in doubt,

go to your sponsor, your 12 & 12 or a meeting. Anonymity in the digital age does not have to

be scary. We can be led by the spiritual principals that have guided us since the Traditions

came into being. As the 12 & 12 says, "We are sure that humility, expressed by anonymity, is

the greatest safeguard that Alcoholics Anonymous can ever have.”

Congratulations to the donor who

sent in $9 this month.

In the last few months we have re-

ceived envelopes with balloons on

them that have no flap to fill in

birthday information and the indi-

viduals name and group. Because

this information is missing, we

have no way of knowing what the

money being sent to us is for.

Please, if your group has this type

of envelope, throw them out and

get some new ones from us. They

are available here at the office or at

the delegates meeting.

All of these people got their names in

the paper because someone took the

time and trouble to let us know they

were celebrating. Be proud of your old

Central Office Delegates Meeting Minutes at the Shawnee Group – August 13, 2017

Janet B. – Janet B., the Delegates Chair, opened the meeting at 10:04 a.m. with the Serenity Prayer.

Link S. – Secretary’s report. The July Minutes, including the June minutes corrections, were distributed to all

Delegates via email, and available at the meeting. The July Minutes were approved with correction as shown be-

low after these August meeting minutes.

Art S. was not present– Treasurer’s Report – Given by Sue Ann. The Financial report for July was given by Sue

Ann. Income $11,617.46 ~ Expenses $12,238.64 ~ leaves a net loss of $621.18. Both a short report and a more

detailed report, as requested at the last delegates’ meeting, are made available.

AJ – The Board Report for the July Board of Director’s Meeting was given by AJ, Board President. AJ read a

summary of the report from Michael relating to the audit of Central Office financial records and practices. The

full Board of Director’s Meeting minutes, and Michael’s report, are available by request to Central Office. There

was considerable discussion about Michael’s report. Michael asked that we all read the entire report and recom-

mendations and then hold both the board and the Central Office manager responsible for adhering to recommend-

ed policies and procedures, as adopted by the board. Email address for board: [email protected].

Sue Ann – The Office report was given by Sue Ann, central office director. Shelves are stocked and bills are paid. Donations have been received from some of the groups that had previously cut-off donations to Central Office. When people die and the family puts in the obituary to send contributions to KC Central Office, the central office cannot accept the contributions. Recently, two long-term members died and Central Office had to make calls to see if the contributions were made by members. Sue Ann had eye surgery on Wednesday and can now see every-one! Sue Ann will have eye surgery on the other eye this Wednesday so she will miss the board meeting. There-sa, the office manager, will have Sue Ann’s voice and vote at the board meeting. Following some discussion about how Sue Ann was initially selected the Central Office Director, she gave a brief account of her employment history and education. She worked 25 years for 7-11, where she was an auditor and a supervisor. She later worked as an executive secretary and learned lots of other things. Her degree is in computer science from 1983. There is a lot she doesn’t know, but she doesn’t mind learning. She is very willing to work on any recommenda-tions from the board. Cheri (IT Report) – No report. Old Business: None.

New Business: Ted U. from Primary Purpose stated a need at the Wyandotte County Jail for evening meet-

ings (Monday – Saturday). This is a new opportunity and volunteers are needed. There are frequently 15-20 guys

coming to jail meetings. Orientation on 8/28 for new volunteers, men and women, at the Wyandotte County

Courthouse. Questions can be directed to Ted at (913) 940-0610. Two local programs assist prisoners on release.

In Missouri, it is called Bridge the Gap; in Kansas, Free Release.

MO Area 39 Delegate Report: Marjor ie H. cur rently serves as the Panel 67, Area 39 Delegate from Western

Missouri. She attended the 67th General Service Conference which took place April 23-29, 2017 in Rye Brook,

NY. She thanked Steve for driving her to our Delegates’ Meeting to give her report. She thanked the groups for

contributions to GSO. She described the Conference experience as sharing great passion for AA, humor and

friendship. She is grateful to be included in the decisions that affect AA. Marjorie received 1,277 pages of

background material before going to the Conference. She served on the public information (PI) committee. GSO add-

ed additional pages before she left. She attended a send-off dinner in Springfield.

At KCI she met with the Kansas delegate and they travelled together to New York. Saturday afternoon was a meet

and greet. Marjorie is the first female delegate from district 67 in many years. Response to comment on nervousness

from GSO staff: “The weight of the triangle is not on your shoulders. God has it.” She attended the remote communi-

ties workshop and learned many new things. A Spanish speaking community in our own area may be a remote com-

munity because of the language barrier. Each conference member has not only a vote, but a voice. Average age was

59.

Marjorie passed out highlights of the conference. One comment from the Conference was that members should “Quit

using the Fourth Tradition to violate all of the other ones”. There is a need for literature geared toward lower reading

levels. Only one delegate needed an interpreter, a French-speaker from Quebec. GSO responded to more than 90,000

emails and letters last year. At the podium where delegates address the conference there is a green light, a yellow

light, and a red light. When the red light comes on the microphone shuts off.

$5,000 individual bequest limit will continue. The annual contribution limit from living members of $3,000 will con-

tinue. The conference ended with the Serenity Prayer read in English, French and Spanish. A full copy of the Dele-

gate’s Report will be made available on the Western Area website wamo-aa.org.

THE HAND OF AA-INCLUSIVE NEVER EXCLUSIVE

I’m not so sure that we did ourselves any favors by creating coming up with a shortened version of

the Twelve Traditions. The short form is what’s read at most meetings and often the only version members

know. Consequently, our Third Tradition often interpreted as “just say you don’t want to drink,” whether

you drink or not. What is ignored is the need for identification. f the steps were all that was needed for re-

covery, we could sit at home and work them alone. Meetings would be irrelevant. But it doesn’t work that

way. A necessary part of our recovery is identifying with other human beings who have been where we’ve

been, done what we’ve done, and felt what we’ve felt—and have recovered. How can someone who

doesn’t have a problem with alcohol, but doesn’t want to drink, identify with the alcoholic? Would I go to

Gamblers Anonymous to treat my overeating? To Overeaters Anonymous to learn how to live, one day at

a time, without crack cocaine? The Steps may be the same but it’s not the same. Related: Probably. But not

the same.

Encouraging nonalcoholic to participate in AA creates problems for alcoholics and for the individ-

ual who is not addressing his or her real problem.. By not guiding them to a program that more specifically

addresses their problem, we may be signing their death warrant. As Bill says in “Problems Other than Al-

cohol,” “it has been learned that there is no possible way to make non-alcoholics into A.A. members.”

Membership, no. But we can welcome them as observers at our open meetings.

Bill goes on to warn that our first duty as a society is to insure our own survival; that we must

avoid distraction and multipurpose activity; and that an AA group, as such, can't take on all the personal

problems of its members, let alone the problems of the whole world. When our primary purpose gets mud-

dled with talk of drugs, pills, white flour, nicotine, or anything other than alcohol, what happens to the

alcohol, what happens to the alcoholic? There are programs specifically for people with those other prob-

lems. But what about the alcoholic? Where will he go? Who can he find to identify with?

AA groups have fallen apart because a few well-intentioned members insist that although the per-

son isn’t an alcoholic, she should stay because for today, he or she doesn’t want to drink. I’ve seen a

group censure their G.S.R. for taking a nonalcoholic aside to explain that it was a closed meeting for alco-

holics only. Upholding the traditions is not an easy or popular stance to take in today’s AA. Those who do

are often characterized as rigid and out of touch with today’s reality or as uncaring fearful bleeding dea-

cons,. I call them solid-and I hope to have the courage to be one of them.”

Delegates to the Central Office are the voice of your group. Each group elects a representative to be a

Central Office Delegate or Intergroup Representative. The representative serves a term decided by each

group. The KC Central Office holds its monthly meetings on second Sunday of each month. The meetings

are usually at 10am and travels to different group locations voluntarily hosted by that group.

The Office has an eleven member Board of Directors. It is a 3 years service position. The Board Members

are elected every April by the group’s Central Office Delegates. The Board Members oversee the running

of the Office.

Central Office Delegates also serve as a link between the local groups and functions of the office by:

A.) Reporting the group happenings

B.) Sharing the group problem and/or solutions

C.) Developing support for each other to keep the fellowship communications going

D.) Coordinating with each other and area service committees to help the still suffering alcoholic.

Central Office Finances

Income *$10,811.85

Expense *$12,313.23

Net Loss/Gain *$-1,501.38

*These are preliminary numbers

We now have a five month prudent reserve. At the October,

2015 Board of Directors meeting a motion was made, second-

ed and passed that Central Office establish a six month pru-

dent reserve. We are almost there..

2017 August Donations *$3,521.33

2016 July Donations $5,862.24

Each group has the ability to make these numbers

change If you do not see your home group listed

here, it is because Central Office has not received

a donation. Please ask why. If your group feels

we need to be of more service in some area, please

let us know. We cannot change that of which we

are ignorant.

As per your request, we are now publishing a more

complete financial report. I hope this pleases those of you who

have asked for it. If not, please let me know what else you

would like to see. After all, this is your money! We at Central

Office try to be good stewards of it.

Our Accountant, Janet B. of the Lenexa Group tries to

come in as soon after the first of the month as possible so you

can get final numbers. There will be months, however, that we

will print preliminary numbers because of the publishing date.

That will be noted above,.
