changing the world of dentistry with dental informatics
DESCRIPTION
Like most other domains of human life, dentistry is “going digital.” Paper records, celluloid x-rays and scalpels are “out” – electronic dental records, digital x-rays and lasers are “in.” The digital revolution will reshape how we treat our patients, make clinical decisions, document patient care and share clinical information. This presentation will discuss functions and design of current electronic dental records, and present some new designs which improve support for clinicians’ information review and decision-making. We will also talk about how dental information is represented within dental records, and how we could begin to standardize it in order to exchange it more easily. We will end with a brief overview of the emerging discipline of dental informatics.TRANSCRIPT

What has made today’s EDRs possible?• transition from DOS to Windows• all data – and many artifacts – in
dentistry now digital• data acquisition technologies
(digital cameras [intra- and extraoral], digital radiology, Florida Probe, etc.)
• cheap hardware and network bandwidth

How do you know whether you are a good dentist?
The marginal gap of your crowns is < 30 micron.
Your patients get better.
You make lots of money.
You believe that you are.

Order from chaos - an information model for general dentistry• extract data from ~100 de-
identified patient records• combine with results from previous
studies• validate information item list
(~1,100 fields) through Delphi study
• construct information modelAcharya A, et al. Electronic dental record information model. Int J Med Eng Inform. 2009;1(4):418-34.
