Native STAND is an inter-tribal curriculum for high school-aged teens (14-18 years old) that draws on cultural teachings and values from across Indian Country and Alaska. We hope that learning other Native cultures, traditions, and perspectives will serve to strengthen a sense of pride, not only for one’s own tribe, but for all Native American tribes. The curriculum is flexible and can be easily adapted to include specific stories and traditions from your own community. The Native STAND curriculum was adapted by the Indian Health Service, the National Coalition of STD Directors, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from an evidence-based intervention: Students Together Against Negative Decisions (STAND). The original STAND was developed for rural youth to promote healthy decision making around sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and teen pregnancy prevention, by Dr. Mike Smith at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia.

North Fork Tribal TANF’s Coast Office had the pleasure of attending the 24th Annual Chumash Intertribal Powwow on Oct. 5th at the beautiful Live Oak Campground in northern Santa Barbara County by Cachuma Lake. This event is attended by many tribes with their beautiful dancers from all over the country every year. It is a quite a beautiful sight to see all the different regalia from the different tribes in attendance, dancing in the competitions. Supervisor Nichole Gonzales and Case Manager Julie Steenport represented NFRTT with an outreach educational booth, greeting and informing
families of our TANF program. Many elders and families visited the NFR TANF booth and walked away with brochures, applications and incentives. It was a beautiful day even though it was 100 degrees. We intend to return next year for their next annual Powwow. Our gratitude to the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians for allowing us to participate and network with their tribe. It was great seeing Tribes supporting other Tribes.
NFRTT Coast Office participated in the Community Connection Outreach that was held on 10/30/19 at the Paso Robles Fairgrounds. Many people inquired about our office location and NFRTT program. Brochures, business cards and applications were made available not only to the public but to other community resource programs for referrals in the San Luis Obispo County area. Even with brush fires burning just north of our location that day, we still put NFRTT out there to the community and had a great successful day! Pictured (Julie-Left and Cari-Right)
