Changing focus by changing minds Explaining the logic around a change of direction is easy – it’s changing the competencies and mind sets that go with the old focus that is hard. This paper will explain how understanding and using brain basics will enable your team to succeed immediately by changing minds to change the focus. © Janis Grummitt November 2010 Many teams are facing a need to change direction and focus. The shift from a commodity to a strategic focus is common in NZ. The challenge is that the old mindset and competenci es are diametrically opposite to those needed in the new team. The question I am often asked is ‘can we develop people in the old team or do we need to start again’? Unfortunately, the most affected teams are often the most dif ficult and disruptive to change – the executive leadership and marketing teams. I suggest that knowing the brain basics needed for change in a team can strengthen the chances of success. Knowing brain basics (or rules) can underpin successful group working. Once these rules are understood it is p ossible to adapt them to specific situations. If we understand the basics, we become conscious of their impact and become empowered to change them; in some cases the change can be immediate. Understanding brain basics enables a gr oup to share a common set of rules and behaviours. The most important knowledge is that we can be conscious of our unconscious. This is often termed ‘mindfulness’. It is an ability to use awareness to control our thoughts and feelings. Teams facing change need success strategies built on brain basics.
