Agenda for Session

Overview of Transition Students Affected – by BoE Code Credit Requirements for L/I Students Preparation PSRB Implications/ Issues/Solutions Questions/ Discussion

What Does Transition Mean?

Students moving from one credit point structure to another

Change in credit point structure of modules presents issues for progression

How do we deal with students who need to complete or repeat when the modules concerned have been refocused?

Overview of Transition – Introduction of Refocused Curriculum

On Campus –L4 from 12/ 13Franchise – L4 from 12/ 13Partner Colleges – L4 from 13/ 14Other Collabs. – L4 from 13/ 14Masters – refocused curriculum from 13/ 14 but structural changes not anticipated

Overview of TransitionKey Points

1.New structure will be introduced year on year in most cases2.15 c.p. modules will not be offered in 12/ 13 at L43.Where 120 credits studied at L4 – 90 are needed to progress4.Additional fees will not be incurred

The principle is that students will not be disadvantaged

Requirements for Progression at L4

Completed 120 credits & submitted in all assessments

Achieved 40% pass in modules equivalent to 90 credits

Achieved a minimum of 20% in every module Achieved a weighted average of 40% across the

level No non-submissions at component or module

level Satisfied any pre-requisite requirements

BoE Decisions & ImplicationsNO TRANSITIONAL IMPLICATIONS

•Pass Award – successful completion of final level•Pass Proceed - successful completion of level•Award Proceed - successful completion of level•Components Pending – interim outcome/ reassessment•Deferred – interim outcome (decision deferred – not student!)•Referred/ Attendance not required – resubmission of coursework/ exam by specified date•Reassessment for Award/ Attendance not required – resit/ resubmission of failed components required by specified date

Page 8: Changes to Modular Structure Transitional Arrangements for Progression 2011/12

BoE Decisions & Implications• Level Incomplete - student continues level in 12/13• Fail/ Complete – failed level/ part of level – completes

failed modules in 12/ 13 with attendance• Fail/ Repeat – repeats full level in 12/ 13 • Deferred/ Proceed – student proceeds carrying fails:

may need to attend• Components/ Deferred– outcome following mitigation:

may need to attend• Referred/ Attendance required – resit/ resubmission

required by specified date• Reassessment for Award/ Attendance required –

resit/ resubmission of failed components required by specified date**All these students will potentially be moved to 20cp modules

Complete/ Repeat Students Remember… students are only getting

over the progression line (90 cps) Academic colleagues will need to

identify the refocused modules most appropriate to repeat/ complete study based on relative L.O.s

EG>>>

EG: Fail Complete Student with 75 credits passed

Student has passed 5 x 15cp modules/ failed 3 (but no N.S.) Needs to repeat 1 refocused (20 cp) module with attendance to

achieve 95 cps and satisfy progression requirements Academic team decides on most appropriate module to offer to

student

Another one - Student has passed 4 x 15cp modules/ failed 4 – 60 cps banked Needs to repeat 2 refocused (20 cp) modules with attendance to achieve

100 cps and satisfy progression requirements Academic team decides on most appropriate module to offer to student

Page 11: Changes to Modular Structure Transitional Arrangements for Progression 2011/12

Things to Consider Which Might Help

Rpt/ Complete students may attend refocused modules but be offered original assessments

BoEs have discretion at Level 4 to offer up to 10% of the marks in up to 2 modules

Students who achieve less than 50% of the credits required for progression are automatically Fail/ Repeat

Preparation• Identify potential problems at an early stage• Think about students who are semester 2 starts

* Will the faculty deliver “their” 2nd semester modules on the old structure?

• Seek Advice (FQT/ QSRE/ ADs)• HoS’s! Consider what is sustainable to deliver

At Boards• Hold a Pre-Board!• Approach Pragmatically• Use Chairs Actions if Unsure

Page 14: Changes to Modular Structure Transitional Arrangements for Progression 2011/12

PSRB Accredited CoursesThink About This

•Progression requirements may be different – i.e. passes required in all modules•Learning outcomes of refocused curriculum may be dispersed – students may have to undertake more modules than expected

Remember This•Boards are empowered to decide whether learning outcomes have been met

Also•Rpt. students may attend refocused modules but undertake original assessments if more appropriate•Faculties may decide it is sustainable to repeat 15cp modules for PSRB courses•Old modules may be supported via VLE/ tutorial support
