All About Matter
![Page 2: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
What is Matter?•Matter is the stuff around
you•Anything made of atoms
and molecules•Anything that has mass
![Page 3: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
What are Elements?
• The building blocks of matter• Cannot be broken down into another
substance

Atoms
• The smallest particle of an element that has the properties of the element
![Page 5: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Parts of an Atom
• Nucleus – the center of an atom• Proton – particle of an atom that has a
positive charge• Neutron – particle of an atom that has no
charge• Electron – particle of an atom that has a
negative charge
![Page 6: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What is a Molecule?
• Two or more atoms joined together
![Page 7: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Compound• A substance made up of atoms of more than
one element joined together in a molecule
![Page 8: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Compare Compounds and Molecules
• All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds.
• Example - O2 and N2 are molecules (not compounds) because they have a single element
• Example - H2O and CO2 are compounds (and molecules) because they are made from more than one element.
![Page 9: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Mixture• Two or more substances that are mixed
together, but can be separated out because their atoms are not combined
![Page 10: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Solution• A mixture in which substances break up into
their most basic particle• Are too small to be seen• Spread evenly through another substance.
![Page 11: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Physical PropertiesThe characteristics of an object that you can observe with your senses or measure.
1. Hardness-How hard or soft is it?2. Texture-What is its surface like?3. Mass-How heavy is it?4. Elasticity-How much will it stretch or bend before breaking?5. Odor-What does it smell like?6. Magnetism-It it magnetic?7. Melting Point-At what temperature will it melt or freeze?
![Page 12: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
States of MatterSolid
• It has a definite shape. • It has a definite mass. • It has a definite volume.
![Page 13: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
States of MatterLiquid
It does not have a definite shape. It has a definite mass. It has a definite volume.
![Page 14: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
States of MatterGas
It does not have a definite shape. It does not have a definite mass. It does not have a definite volume.
![Page 15: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Physical Change• A change in any physical properties
of a substance, not in the substance itself.
![Page 16: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Sometimes its Difficult to Tell
• Ask Yourself:• “Do I have the same substance
that I started with?”• If yes, then the changes it
underwent were all physical changes.
![Page 17: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Chemical Properties
• Describes the way a substance reacts with other substances and changes into a new substance, either by combining with other elements or breaking apart into a new substance.
![Page 18: Changes In Matter](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062308/558e52881a28ab5f0a8b4640/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Sometimes its Difficult to Tell
Chemical properties are not as easy to observe aphysical properties.• Observe chemical properties when a
substance is being changed.Examples:Wood burningIron rusting
