change & thrive

“It used to be about trying to
do something, now is about trying to be someone.”
CHANGE OR DIE.
What if you were given that choice?
Were talking actual life and death now.
Your own life and death.
CHANGE OR DIE.
What if a well-informed, trusted
authority figure said you had to make
difficult and enduring changes
in the way you think, feel, and act?
CHANGE OR DIE.
If you didn't, your time would end soon—a lot sooner than it had to.
Could you change when
change mattered most?
CHANGE OR DIE.
This is the question Alan Deutschman
poses in Change or Die, which
began as a sensational cover
story by the same title for Fast Company
CHANGE OR DIE.
Deutschman concludes that although we all
have the ability to change our
behavior, we rarely ever do.
CHANGE OR DIE.
In fact, the odds are nine to
one that, when faced with the dire need
to change, we wont.
Alan Deutschman
"From patients suffering from heart disease to repeat offenders in the criminal justice system to companies trapped in the mold of unsuccessful
business practices, many of us could prevent ominous outcomes by simply changing our mindset."
Alan Deutschman
A powerful book with universal appeal, Change or Die deconstructs and debunks age-old
myths about change and empowers us with three critical keys—relate, repeat, and reframe—to help us
make important positive changes in our lives.
Alan Deutschman
My mission is to replace those three
misconceptions about change—our trust in facts, fear, and force (the three Fs)—with
what I call “the three keys to change.”
Facts
We like to think that the facts can convince people
to change.
We like to think that people are essentially “rational”—that is, they’ll act in their self-interest if they have accurate
information.
Facts
We believe that “knowledge is
power” and that “the truth will set
you free.”
( it's not the truth that sets you free it's the the truth you know and act on or do, that makes you free. Look at Scripture)
What Does Scripture Say?
John 8:31-32 (KJV)
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then
are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
Fear
We like to think that change is motivated by fear and that the strongest force for change is
crisis, which creates
the greatest fear
RARE EWE FETISH BROOM
Fear is limited.
Young Hungry Boys
Fear of Sweeping all night long
Discovered not to be so
Now fear no more works on them.
Force
Finally, we often believe that people can’t
change or that they “resist”
change We think that this is
simply human nature.
Force
Our most distinguished
experts think that it’s naive and
hopeless to expect the vast majority of people to change.
Force
So we give up or resort to force which leads to
rebellion Those who try to force
changes on their Children discover this and with
Armed robbers
Deutschman calls these keys the "Three Rs":
Relate (i.e. "Your form a new, emotional
relationship with a person or community
that inspires and sustains hope"),
Greatest Motivation for Change
We are not changing today because we have lost Hope in God and in
ourselves.
Our greatest need now is
Greatest Motivation for Change
Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down
at the right hand of the throne of God.
Greatest Motivation for Change
Proverbs 13:12 (KJV)
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the
desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
We Have Lost Hope
The country is so corrupt that helping our
fellow man is not enough motivation but we must remind them
of judgement.
Judgement not for sin but did you fulfill your
purpose
We Have Lost Hope
What did you do with the life I gave you?
There are adulterers who fulfilled purpose like David and non adulterers who did
not like Saul
Connection Between Hope & Vision
Genesis 15:2-3 (KJV)
And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go
childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
Connection Between Hope & Vision
Genesis 15:2-3 (KJV)
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no
seed:and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Connection Between Hope & Vision
Genesis 15:4-5 (KJV)
And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come
forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
Connection Between Hope & Vision
Genesis 15:4-5 (KJV)
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and
tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:and he said unto
him, So shall thy seed be.
What's Your Hope?
What makes you get up in the morning
It's the purpose of the marriage that gives you hope not the
marriage
The Importance of Vision
Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
Where there is no vision, the
people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
The Importance of Vision
Proverbs 29:18 (NIV)
Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law.
Without Vision People Cast Off Restraint
Openly Stealing Since there no
hope to get money legitimately
If all all you see is hopelessness then
you give up.
Without Vision People Cast Off Restraint
If we don't reconnect with our
purpose and hope.
We would simply return to being
mere men!
Hope is The Anchor of Our Soul
Hebrews 6:19-20 KJV
(19) Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and
which entereth into that within the veil; (20) Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever
after the order of Melchisedec.
Hope Lost
Luke 24:19-21 KJV
(19) And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him,
Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before
God and all the people:
Hope Lost
Luke 24:19-21 KJV
(20) And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have
crucified him. (21) But we trusted that it had been he which should have
redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
What Did Peter Do?
John 21:1-2 (AMP)
AFTER THIS, Jesus let Himself be seen and revealed [Himself] again to the disciples, at the
Sea of Tiberias. And He did it in this way: 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, called
the Twin, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, also the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His
disciples.
What Did Peter Do?
John 21:3 (AMP)
Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing! They said to him, And we are coming with you! So they went out
and got into the boat, and throughout that night they caught nothing.
Jesus Restores Peter
John 21:17 (AMP)
He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, instinctive, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]?
Peter was grieved (was saddened and hurt) that He should ask him the third time, Do you love
Me?
Jesus Restores Peter
John 21:17 (AMP)
And he said to Him, Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [that I have a deep, instinctive, personal affection
for You, as for a close friend].
Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep.
2nd of Deutschman's "Three Rs":
Repeat (i.e. "The new
relationship helps you learn, practice, and master the new
habits and skills that you need"),
2. Stay in the community of hope builders
That's why you join a church
Attend weekly services
Join in Prayer Meetings
Everything your learn would be challenged
after here
2. Stay in the community of hope builders
Hebrews 10:24-25 (KJV)
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:25 Not
forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one
another:and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
3rd of Deutschman's "Three Rs":
Reframe
(i.e. "The new relationship helps
you learn new ways of thinking about your situation and
your life").
Change Your Thinking
These are the three keys to change:
relate, repeat, and reframe.
New hope, new skills, and new thinking
Change Your Thinking
“Problems cannot be
solved by the same level of thinking that
created them.” Albert Einstein
Change Your Thinking
Romans 12:1-2 (KJV)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present
your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.
Change Your Thinking
Romans 12:1-2 (KJV)
2 And be not conformed to this world:but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Change Your Thinking
Romans 12:2 (NLT)
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for
you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future."
1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
But since we belong to the day, let us
be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a
breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord
Jesus Christ. He died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live
together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Romans 15:4
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that
through endurance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope.
