Spartanburg man indicted on

federal gun and drug charges

Xavier Lee Gist, age 22, of Spartanburg, was chargedin a four-count indictment with two counts of possessionof a firearm by a prohibited person; possession with theintent to distribute cocaine base (crack); and possessionof a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.The maximum penalty Gist could face is a fine of$1,750,000.00 and/or imprisonment of 45 years. Thecase was investigated by the Spartanburg PoliceDepartment and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco andFirearms and is being prosecuted by Special AssistantUnited States Attorney Jennifer Wells of the Greenvilleoffice.

Unworldly comedy abounds in Blithe SpiritThe Spartanburg Little Theatre’s next production in its

2016-17 season is the classic Noel Coward farce BlitheSpirit, which first premiered on London’s West End in1941. Made famous by the 1945 film version starringRex Harrison, Blithe Spirit opens on Friday, March 10and runs for two weekends through March 19.Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pmand Sunday afternoons at 3 pm.

Wofford College professor

and author John Lane has

been named a finalist for the

prestigious John Burroughs

Medal, created in 1926 to rec-

ognize the best in nature writ-

ing.

Lane, a professor of English

and environmental studies and

director of Wofford’s Goodall

Environmental Studies

Center, will be recognized in

April at the Annual Literary

Awards Ceremony of the John

Burroughs Associa-tion at the

American Museum of Natural

History in New York City. The

award honors the literary lega-

cy of Burroughs, credited with

creating the modern nature

essay. It is given “to a distin-

guished book of nature writing

that combines scientific accu-

racy, first-hand fieldwork and

excellent natural history writ-

ing,” according to the

Burroughs Association.

Previous medalists include

Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson,

and South Carolinian

Archibald Rutledge.

This year, in an unprece-

dented move in, the associa-

tion will recognize the four

finalists’ “natural history

books of uncommon distinc-

tion,” in addition to honoring

the winner of the award, Brian

Doyle, author of the novel

“Marten, Marten.”

Lane is the author of a dozen

books of poetry and prose,

including six from the

University of Georgia Press.

His latest book from UGA is

“Coyote Settles the South.”

On Thursday, March 23,

Lane and Dan Flores, author

of “Coyote America,” will

lead a dialogue on coyotes as

part of the Tyson Family

Lecture on the Preservation

and Restoration of Southern

Ecosystems at Wofford. The

program, which is free and

open to the public, will be held

at 7 p.m. in Leonard Auditor-

ium in Main Building on

Wofford’s campus.

Lane’s “Abandoned

Quarry: New & Selected

Poems” includes much of his

published poetry from over

the past 30 years, plus a selec-

tion of new poems. His new

book of poems, “Anthro-

pocene Blues,” is forthcoming

this year. Lane’s first novel,

“Fate Moreland’s Widow,”

was published by the late Pat

Conroy’s Story River books in

early 2015.

Lane has won numerous

awards, including the 2001

Phillip D. Reed Memorial

Award for Outstanding

Writing on the Southern

Environment given by the

Southern Environmental Law

Center. In 2011 he won the

Glenna Luschei Prairie

Schooner Award, and in 2012

“Abandoned Quarry” won the

Southeastern Independent

Booksellers Alliance Poetry

Book of the Year prize.

As an environmentalist,

Lane was named the 2013

Water Conservationist of the

Year by the South Carolina

Wildlife Federation and the

Clean Water Champion by

Upstate Forever.

In 2014, he was inducted

into the South Carolina

Academy of Authors. Lane

and his wife, Betsy Teter, co-

foundered Spartanburg’s Hub

City Writers Project.

Sue G. Schneider was honored with the award at the 2017 Spartanburg Chamber of

Commerce annual celebration, held on March 2nd. She is the Chief Executive Officer

of Spartanburg Water System in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She joined Spartanburg

Water in 1998 as the Assistant General Manager and was promoted to Chief Executive

Officer (CEO) in 2007. Sue has more than 30 years in the environmental remediation,

public utilities and environmental management fields. Prior to coming to Spartanburg

Water, Sue worked for Westinghouse Electric at Department of Energy sites in New

York and Ohio. Prior to her time at Westinghouse she was involved in hazardous waste

site remediation activities at a subsidiary of Browning-Ferris Industries in Ohio.

As the Past Chair of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, she distinguished

herself as the first woman to lead that organization. In addition, she is currently an

executive board member of Ten at the Top and the Urban League of the Upstate, and

serves on the board of the South Carolina Associations of United Way and the Rotary

Club of Spartanburg.

Her leadership also extends to the global water industry. She has served a number of

roles for the Water Environment Federation. Her leadership within the American Water

Works Association, or AWWA, includes her role as Chair of the South Carolina sec-

tion. She was a past member of AWWA’s Executive Board.

Sue received her Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from The Ohio State

University, a Master of Science in Environmental Science from the University of

Cincinnati and a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University.

Wofford Interim class ‘trains’ students to write creatively

During the month ofJanuary, a band of Woffordstudents wrote hundreds ofthousands of words. Theywrote for fun, for creditand, most importantly, forgrowth.“I want to encourage my

students to write and tolove writing and to be ableto talk about literature, butin the end it’s really aboutbuilding discipline,” saysDr. Tracy Revels, profes-sor of history, who taughtThe Writer's Workshopduring Interim.Lee Holden, a third-year

history and philosophymajor, enjoyed the disci-pline and structure of theclass.“I got a feel for the day-

to-day grind of writing. Itreally comes down to per-sistence,” says Holden.“It’s useful for people whostruggle with puttingwords to page. This classput an emphasis on writingno matter what becauseyou can only move for-ward if you keep trying.”The class spent their days

speaking with other writ-ers, such as Wofford’s ownFarahnaz Afaq ’18, who

wrote her own autobio-graphical children’s bookbased on her story as anAfghan refuge. She tookThe Writer’s Workout theprior year to learn writingtechniques and devicesand to practice using avariety of prompts.Prompts ranged from try-

ing to portray one specificemotion or taking photosof people from theVictorian era and creatingbackstories and situationsfor them. SamanthaWagner ’17 used this latterprompt as a springboardfor the piece she read atthe class Coffee Houseevent, during which everystudent read their favoritework.Wagner, a humanities and

Spanish double major witha business minor, is thank-ful for the class forreminding her how towrite for fun.“I’d forgotten what it was

like to write for promptsnot for page numbers, so itwas a wonderful sort ofrefocusing of my inter-ests,” says Wagner.“Creative writing requiresthe writer to synthesize

experience, knowledgeand imagination into onework. It is the intersectionof critical thinking andcreativity and thus is a cru-cial part of a liberal artseducation. It’s beeninvaluable for my time atWofford and will be somoving forward.”

At the end of the day,Revels says the class’sfocus on writing is founda-tional to education as wellas forming healthy, well-rounded and interestingindividuals, but also forcommunity building.“I’m not involved in the

creative writing programat Wofford, but writing isvery much a part of who Iam,” says Revels. “Sowhen students write, Iwrite with them. I wantedto create an open environ-ment where we could allshare and bond. ... There isa community here atWofford that writes andencourages others to writeso I hope my students canfind a place within it."

Attorney Beth Drake stat-

ed recently that Dalvin

Michael Davenport, Jr.,

age 23, of Greenville, was

sentenced to 24 months

imprisonment, followed by

3 years of supervised

release and restitution of

$30,857.89, after pleading

guilty to charges of con-

spiracy to commit access

device fraud and money

laundering. United States

District Judge Timothy M.

Cain, of Anderson sen-

tenced Davenport on

February 9th.

At an earlier guilty plea

hearing, Assistant U. S.

Attorney Jeanne Howard,

established that Daven-

port, along with other

members of the conspira-

cy, recruited cashiers at

various businesses to cred-

it funds onto Green Dot,

Visa and other prepaid

cards without receiving

payment. Immediately

after obtaining the prepaid

cards, members of the con-

spiracy activated and

depleted the cards of the

fraudulently loaded funds.

In total, the conspiracy

resulted in a loss of over

$264,000.00, to several

businesses in South Caro-

lina and Georgia.

Other members of the

conspiracy who previously

entered guilty pleas and

have been sentenced

include the following:

age 26, of Greenville, sen-

tenced to 36 months

imprisonment; Cierra

Andreous James, age 24,

of Greenville, sentenced to
