Experience Mapping WorkshopLasting digital engagement today is no longer just a series of interactive touch points, but rather, a digital experience that authentically speaks to the aspirations, needs and pain points of your customers. To ensure the effectiveness of our clients’ users’ experiences, and to help organizations navigate omni-channel complexity, we employ experience mapping – a strategic process of capturing and communicating complex customer interactions.

• Goals, needs and pain-points for your customer group(s)

• The actions, thoughts and feeling at each stage of the customer journey

• An experience map – the strategic foundation for your digital solution

Story Mapping WorkshopWith digital products increasing in complexity, it is imperative to create a structured process that outlines where your project is at and where it needs to go. Our Story Mapping workshop is a textual visualization of identified user tasks, user goals and business goals within a product’s features. Story Mapping creates a roadmap specifically for a client’s product at the development stage…the moment when our technical expertise is ready to build the product.

A sampling of what you’ll walk away with:

• Develop a backlog, user stories and identify holes in a product’s backlog

• Build a structured development plan

• Create an effective release plan based on your user types and the associated business value

Envision your next look. Anytime. Anywhere.

Platform & Mobile // Prototype Platform

Virtual Try-On ExperienceIn partnership with ULSee, we envisioned and built a game-changing smart mirror platform that companies can customize to their niche market, utilize existing 2D assets, and expand their mobile presence to create a never-before-seen augmented reality shopping experience. We conducted people-centric research to form customer archetypes, and from there we went through the experience mapping and story mapping process, which informed the design of a functional prototype for test markets. We met with international eyewear powerhouses to understand their unique business needs and objectives in order to get the right product to market in the most efficient way.

Sixty-six feature points within the facial tracking software allowed for head and facial movement recognition that creates a life-like view for how the product will look, in near-perfect scale, on the consumer. This resulted in the creation of a smart mirror platform, featuring Pupillary Distance (PD) measurement, virtual try-on, and 2D to 3D conversion of inventory imagery. This gives the ability to fit approximately 10,000 virtual frames on a single application, with additional inventory accessed server-side.

• Core technology platform can be applied virtually to any facial “try-on” need: i.e., eyewear, make-up, etc.

• Use of existing 2D marketing imagery converted to 3D

• Immediate connection between businesses and their customers, 24-hours a day

• Scalable business solution that limits need for costly on-site inventory

The first smoking cessation application for the severely mentally ill.

Mobile // National Institute of Drug Abuse

Learn to QuitIn partnership with clinical psychologist, Dr. Roger Vilardaga, we planned, designed and built a revolutionary smoking cessation app for one of the most underserved segments of our population – the severely mentally ill. This demographic makes up nearly 45% of all cigarettes consumed in the United States, yet out of the more than 530 smoking cessation apps in-market, very few have gone through the rigors of clinical trials needed to address the very specific requirements for lasting treatment. Learn to Quit is based on Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), a new form of behavioral therapy that guides and coaches individuals as they learn to quit.

Our design team translated these ACT techniques via visual storytelling to meet the precise needs of SMI. Case in point, to address the physical and behavioral limitations of the user group, we used a muted palette to lessen sensitivity to over-stimulation, buttons were created instead of swiping to account for users with pharma-induced tremors, and simple illustrations conveyed complex, abstract concepts. Learn to Quit is currently undergoing clinical trials and is funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

Five fantastical worlds. One unique adventure.

Mobile // Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

David Wiesner SpotThree-time Caldecott winner, David Wiesner, and his publishing partner Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, sought to bring to life an epic world-within-a-world fantasy adventure that takes the user through a series of unique worlds, accessed through…you guessed it…a spot on a ladybug’s shell. Spot had been David’s dream for decades, so over the course of 12 months we look a lean approach by immediately prototyping the interactions and transitions of five worlds while David perfected his vision and artwork. Once higher-level prototypes were in place, we began testing the application with users to see how the interactions felt and how users were responding to the content.

From some of David’s most beloved characters from Mr. Wuffles!, to worlds that thrive underneath an armchair and an intergalactic space station, we helped bring to life five interwoven worlds that take users through a fantastical journey hidden from plain site. The use of animation, atmospheric sounds, and interactive elements create a visual experience that is never the same twice. The omission of verbal narration allows the user to dictate their own adventure within the framework of visual exploration and is a jumping-off point for wherever an explorer’s mind will take them.

Mobile // Penguin Random House

Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French CookingWe created a cooking app to simplify the complexity of Julia Child’s delicious French cooking and celebrate her extraordinary life. While Mastering the Art of French Cooking can be seen as intimidating, we wanted to create an environment that was approachable and warm. Since the user interface was the first point of contact, we chose to incorporate – as a way to capture her essence – elegant transitions, lush textures, rich patterns, and vivid photography of Julia’s life and culinary masterpieces.

As a metaphor to organize the content, we chose the traditional recipe card, which allowed for quick and easy navigation. To capture the time in which she lived, videos associated with recipes from the 1980’s television series, The Way to Cook, gave it a retro flare, as well as an additional dimension to her huge personality. A carousel of rare photographs with narration by her long time friend and editor, Judith Jones, provided an intimate window into Julia’s life.

Mobile // Penguin Random House

Stephen Hawking’s Snapshots of the UniverseThe world’s foremost authority on science, Dr. Stephen Hawking, and his publisher, Penguin Random House, sought to translate his best-selling books, A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell, into an interactive and educational mobile application that makes the laws of time and space not only accessible, but engaging and fun. By taking an “easy to use, difficult to master” approach, we took our extensive history in game design (400 and expanding!) and used it as our North Star during development, because casual games have clear appeal to kids and adults.

We applied game mechanics like “mastery” to motivate users to master scientific concepts, just like they might want to master levels in a game. We also made a deliberate departure from the more typical dark palette and highly rendered graphics we too often see in science and space content, in favor of a super-simplified visual treatment. Distilling the visuals down to an infographic style added clarity to the content, as well as making the app more relevant and appealing to a general audience.

Product Development & Mobile // Mattel®

Barbie Digital MakeoverThrough a great collaboration with our clients at Mattel® and their technology partner, CyWee, we helped create an engaging, connected experience that introduces an entirely new way to play. Just slide an iPad® into Mattel’s Barbie Digital Makeover console, and it automatically connects via Bluetooth to power the experience. The Barbie® Digital Makeover iOS app launches, the lights on the console come on, and the iPad’s front facing camera projects your image onto the screen.

Applying digital makeup is an intuitive, fun process and is almost indistinguishable from putting on real makeup. You can select options like eye shadow, lipstick or blush and apply colors and glitter to the “Digital You” by touching a color pod on the base of the console with your finger, then pretend to apply the makeup to the “Real You” with the applicator – the facial-tracking technology keeps the digital makeup in place as you move, as though you’re really wearing it. You can also apply accessories, such as hair bows and headbands to the “Digital You” that also stay in place. Once your look has been perfected you can strike a pose and take a snapshot of yourself. Before saving your creation to the Photos app on your iPad, you can apply frames, graphics, speech bubbles, and other touches of flair that reflect your personality or sense of style.

Platform & Mobile // Conceptual Case Study

Panasonic AvionicsUsing a skies-the-limit approach, we conceptualized how airlines could revolutionize a flyer’s experience from start to finish. All airport and flight information, entertainment and amenities would be centralized into one user-friendly platform. All components of the trip could be managed from the singular, seamless application, reducing travel stress. The application could even navigate the traveler to the shortest security wait lines. Once on the airplane, in-flight entertainment would be initiated by the flight crew and would cease the moment they deplaned, yet the flyer’s personalized travel information would continue to run.

Airlines spend millions of dollars a year on the upkeep of in-flight entertainment, with local servers housed on each airplane. This equates to additional bulk and weight, not just for the servers and screens alone, but for the of rivers of wiring flowing throughout the subflooring. By developing a cloud-based platform that eliminates such physical additions to the plane, airlines could potentially save millions on fuel, and the weight reduction could allow for planes to travel greater distances with less cost.

• Delivered proof of concept for personalized in-flight entertainment and amenities that are available at any time throughout the duration of the flight

• Reduced airline infrastructure allows for savings in fuel demand and increased time in-air

• Airlines can create a holistic experience for their travelers that span beyond the flight and include hotel, car, food, and shopping advantages – creating greater customer loyalty and engagement
