Mademoiselle Chanel had a very special relationship with Place Vendôme as she wasprivileged to live there at the Ritz Hotel. She could exit via the rear door and walk to her office, workshops and boutique, all situated on the Rue Cambon. The Place Vendôme that she had once challenged when launching her first collectionof diamond pieces during a period when the world was plunged into a deep economic crisis and the luxury houses of the place were suffering from the effects of recession:it was the first time that a “couturière” tookthe risk of creating fine jewelry pieces. For Gabrielle Chanel, this was not her firsttransgression, as she was the first fashiondesigner to dare launching her own perfume– the famous N° 5, with its bottle and stoppersubliminally adopting the shape of Place Vendôme. In setting up its watch and fine jewelry activity in Place Vendôme in 1993,CHANEL confirmed its historic affinity withthis location that had, from its creation, been

at the forefront of Parisian urban design before evolving into an incarnation of timelessarchitectural elegance. It was clearly not by chance that the creation of the Premièrewatch also adopted the shape of Place Vendôme, with its hands positioned in such a way as to evoke the Vendôme column inthe center of the Place. CHANEL watchesare, first and foremost, CHANEL creationsbefore being timepieces. They must respectthe cultural codes associated with CHANELcreations, inspired by the ardor that had always guided Gabrielle Chanel in her invol-vement with fashion and time.

Simple aesthetic codes at the service of greatformal freedom: black, white, pearls, quilting, white gold and white diamonds for materials;purity, surprise, and true chic for line. Muchcreative sincerity for timeless modernity, which never limits itself to mere design andthus may flourish with style and allure. Twentyyears after the launch of the Première in

1987, the magic still continues, whatever the watches’ size, choice of materials or setting. The subsequent collections have allrespected the same stylistic charter, found in the watches’ character and personality rather than in its brand name. It is known thatGabrielle Chanel never particularly fanciedwomen’s watches of her time. They were either too small to be practical or too preciousto be functional. She was attracted to theaesthetics of men’s timepieces.

The J12, considered to be the first truewatchmaking icon of the 21st century, is themodern illustration of this idea. A style bothsporty and masculine, which can sometimesbe dressed up in baguette-cut diamonds torub shoulders with the stars. High-tech ceramic,a precious material that was as innovativeas it was surprising for Place Vendôme, butone which quickly became emblematic of a new relationship to luxury. The J12 has become a permanent instrument of time which

has over the years been endowed with themost refined mechanical “complications”. The story has only just begun betweenCHANEL and timepieces. It began at PlaceVendôme in the private mansion which - a glimpse back in time - once belonged to the Duke of Westminster, one of the mensaid to have had a large effect on the lifeof Mademoiselle Chanel.

Next, the story moves on to the Swiss watch-making valleys, where CHANEL set up awatch manufacture and workshops meeting its demands for high quality and authenticity. Then, it continues on the wrists of all those whoconsider that a timepiece represents muchmore than just an object for telling the time:from now on, in the empire of signs where welive and in the sea of images which is imposedupon us, a watch expresses the very essenceof a personality, a conception of elegance andas Gabrielle Chanel said - one’s « allure » -better than any other object of adornment.

INIMITABLE STYLE

WATCHMAKER

EXPERTISE

La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, located at an altitudeof 1,000 meters above sea level has 37,000 inhabitants. It has the highest concentration of fine watchmakers and related activities worldwide. It was quite natural that the watchmaking facility ofCHANEL was set up at La Chaux-de-Fonds, ideally situated among fir trees, mountain pastures and in closeproximity to the neighboring watch manufacturers andworkshops, which serve the world’s most prestigiouswatchmaking brands. From conception to the final assembly process, CHANELteams conceive, design, shape, mold, polish, assembleand fit all watch parts, including some components of the mechanical movements housed in the famous J12 watchcases in high-tech ceramic.

The MasTery of CeraMiC

The production of high-tech ceramic requires a demandinglevel of know-how which unites earth, air, water andfire. Earth for the natural materials combined to form the “powder” of which an exclusive mix is used to produce high-tech ceramic. Water is used for binding, forming and filtering these natural components. Air isused for drying and giving them form and structure. Fire is used for amalgamating them, bringing the materialits immutable resistance and beauty, which has builtthe reputation of the J12 collection’s watchcases and bracelets today. This chain of events would not becomplete without the metal necessary for sculpting, piercing, grinding and beautifying the high-tech ceramic, nor without the secrets behind its polishing process. These production processes – held in confidence to protect the exclusivity of CHANEL watches – areunique in Switzerland and most probably in the world.

HAUTE HoRLogERIE

At La Chaux-de-Fonds, CHANEL manufactures almostall the parts necessary for its J12 collections. Parts areassembled one by one to create such an exceptionalJ12 watchcase that it receives the highest honor: aHaute Horlogerie calibre signed by Audemars Piguet or Renaud et Papi (APRP SA). Created in a neighboring valley, these movements have been fine-tuned speciallyfor CHANEL, which developed and created the watchexterior in either high-tech ceramic or precious metals. CHANEL adapts technology to its rigorous aesthetic demands and pushes back the boundaries of Haute Horlogerie. This approach has led to the developmentof remarkable innovations, such as the first high-techceramic bottom-plate or the first retractable verticalcrown, operated by a simple pressure.

high Jewelry

Next, the watchcases are set and the dials paved with gemstones. Every possible surface of the watch is adorned with diamonds until the entire timepiece shimmers with light. It is here that CHANEL treats the high-tech ceramic, a precious material in its ownright, with the same attention it bestows on precious gemstones. Cut and facetted in the same manner aspriceless diamonds, the tiny lingots of high-tech ceramiccome alive in the setting workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds,to take on a new sparkle, one that is distinguished andmysterious. Great artistry is achieved through traditionalknow-how; however the heritage always remains atPlace Vendôme, where CHANEL has established itsnew watchmaking and high jewelry activity.

PREMIèRE

Getting straight to the essential is one of the keys tothe “code” of CHANEL. It is not surprising that the first watch launched by CHANEL in 1987 was baptizedthe “Première”: it was both logical and fundamental toa new tradition. The shape of the Première reflects botha heritage and a message.Heritage, as a reminder of the very characteristic geometry of Place Vendôme – a rectangle with cut-offcorners – where its bronze column sits on the Parisianpaving, indicating the passage of time like the hand of a sundial. Equally, a resemblance can be found betweenthe octagonal shape of the Première watchcase and the shape of the bottle stopper Gabrielle Chanel hadchosen for her N° 5 perfume.Message, in order that this heritage can flourish inthe watchmaking world with a timelessly precious watchcapable of bridging the gap between traditional women’stimepieces and the new generation of contemporarywatch designs. The lines of the Première have withstood the test of timewithout losing any of their immediate seduction, whetherit be in gold, steel, diamonds, high-tech ceramic, pearlsor interwoven leather.A watchmaking delight that no woman can resist.

J 12

Six letters in CHANEL. A number for its perfume. One letter and two numbers for the icon watch of thebrand. Mademoiselle Chanel loved to go straight to the essential and strip her creations of any unnecessaryfrills. The name J12 would have certainly seduced her. It corresponds in every way to the idea that she held of a contemporary watch.A number: 12, to punctuate the history of time. One material and two colors: black high-tech ceramicand white high-tech ceramic, with gold, steel or rubbernecessary to equip each model. Then a couple of handfuls of diamonds, rubies, and sapphires to add that final touch of preciousness. The same watchcase in four different sizes and thick-nesses, simple or more complex movements, with somecoming from the most prestigious and specialized manufacturers, and some variations in dials which playwith the codes of CHANEL, without ever losing theiridentity: the J12 is a simple idea charged with emotion.A pronounced identity without any Baroque excess or aesthetic extravagance. The J12 is a sober piece of elegance on the wrist. It has become a manifesto ofCHANEL style and one of the iconic objects of the 21st century.J12: it is inspirited by sport and a watchmaking vocation, and a strong taste for encroaching on jewelry and mechanical one-upmanship. One must not forget the roleof the dream attached to all creations signed CHANEL,a particular idea of style and an audacious approach to modernity. Nothing more is necessary to go downin history.

CaMélia

The great lovers of tea know that they drink an infusionof… camellias, but Mademoiselle Chanel loved camel-lias in bunches. She loved the plump roundness in an explosion of petals, rigorously organized around itscenter. A flower without perfume, of moving simplicity, seemingly obeying the subtle rules of a rigorous internallogic. So many graphic qualities that have quickly made the camellia one of the most symbolic flowers of the CHANEL tradition, since Gabrielle Chanel made it her emblem – in the same manner as the great noble Japanese families – that she pinned on her blouse. This symbol of purity, worn by La Traviata as well as the “elegants” of the Belle Epoque, never ceases reappearing in the CHANEL collections. White petals ona little black dress. Worn in a model’s hair for a fashionshow, plume-like on a haute couture creation and ofcourse, set with diamonds, precious gemstones or onyx on a gold flower-watch, one that will never wilt. A promise of purity and a guarantee of eternity, to tickaway the hours that escape time.

When technical prowess compliments the aesthetics

CHANEL RMT-10 Calibre- R for Retrograde- M for Mysterious- T for Tourbillon

After introducing the first tourbillon featuring a highly innovative high-tech ceramic bottom-plate, CHANELconfirmed its status as a pioneer of contemporary watch-making by creating the J12 Rétrograde Mystérieuse. The Rétrograde Mystérieuse is the embodiment of innovation and includes 5 complications:1. A tourbillon2. A digital minutes display3. A retrograde minutes hand4. A 10-day power reserve 5. A retractable vertical crown

This perfectly round watch with a 47 mm diameter hasbeen designed without a side crown to ensure optimumcomfort on the wrist. The work on this complication wasentrusted to one of the most “state-of-the-art” watch-making design/construction workshops: the Giulio Papiteam (APRP SA).

The Rétrograde MystérieuseWhen the minute hand butts up against the crown builtinto the dial, it starts moving backwards around the dialuntil it is positioned on the other side of the dial: an entirely new retrogradation (return journey) design in theworld of fine mechanical complications. So that the watch continues to give the time whilstthe minute hands is reversing, a digital minute counteris displayed in a magnifying aperture at 6 o'clock: between minutes 11 and 19, the time is therefore readwith the classic hour hand and the figures which appearin this aperture. The watch remains totally accurate, further improved by its tourbillon. The winding crown is retractable: when disconnected fromits various functions (winding and setting the time), it ispushed in and remains blocked in the down position.Simple pressure brings it out of its housing, with no ill effect on the running of the watch, to restore itsfunctions.

J12 INTENSE BLACK

The fire smoldering in the earth created diamonds fromthe very beginning of time. Man’s fire created ceramic,a precious material from our technological golden age. CHANEL treats this treasured stone with techniquesthat until now were reserved for only the most preciousgems. Diamonds, colored stones and ceramic: all requirethe same precise working on the same workshop tables. For the first time in the world, the same respect and cutting techniques are used to craft these 724 grains ofblack light into baguette cuts: high-tech ceramic reflectsthe challenge of new luminosity. Creative tension andan aesthetic approach: the J12 is adorned with a deep, intense black that emphasizes the powerful lines of the watch. CHANEL decided to enhance thisJ12 with a self-winding three-hand Haute Horlogerie movement CHANEL – AP 3125 in partnership with AUDEMARS PIGUET, one of the most prestigiousSwiss watchmakers.

Out of the fusion of the AP3120 movement and J12high-tech ceramic comes the 3125 movement with its balance bridge and black high-tech ceramic cladrotor, both redesigned by CHANEL. As a result, theManufactured movement with self-winding CHANEL -AP 3125 is born.
