Dr. P.N. Hrisheekesha, Campus Director, CGC Patron, Reflections

In a vibrant B-school, the process of learning never stops. The heterogeneity of the students presents various challenges and interesting opportunities. There is somehow fun in reinventing the "wheel" time and again. The search for the utopian state remains, in spite of the awareness that it is not only ever elusive but also futile. The professional education can be made more relevant only if the industry-academia interaction deepens and is maintained as an ongoing exercise. CBSA has continuously tried to evolve, in innovative ways of learning and experience sharing, with a futuristic vision and mission oriented goals. The highly qualified and experienced faculty and state of the art infrastructure helps in imbibing in international education, placements and internship opportunities through faculty exchange internship projects and externally funded programmes.

It gives me immense pleasure to introduce the first edition of newsletter " Reflectionz - Reminisces Revived " which will motivate MBA students to enhance their writing skills and increase their enthusiasm towards extra curricular activities of the department.

BLOGGERS AND POETS OF CBSA

"Success Story of an Entrepreneur” A plan can actually lead to the making of successful entrepreneurs. Have you heard of Ola-cabs? The India's most popular cab aggregator Olacabs providing taxi services is not just an online market place but a brand itself running at its peak. The thought arises has lead to ola at such a place. He is the man behind Ola who has made Olacabs, such a big taxi provider services.Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and CEO of Ola Born in Ludhiana, Bhavish is a self driven entrepreneur. After completing his bachelor's from IIT-B in 2008, he started his career with Microsoft and explored himself. He also turned into a blogger. After 2 years of his service he quit Microsoft and started an online company which dealt with short duration tours and holidays online.Once a while, he came across a bad experience. The driver stopped the car mid way and started negotiating for money. Bhavish refused and the driver left him in between the way with no other help left. Facing such a situation, he realized that a lot more people faced such situations. That was the first time he decided to come out with a potential Cab service. After having some basic calculations, he started Ola cabs. Olacab service seems to be a high potential market, as it runs with 'zero' inventory. Even the Cabs are rented and not owned by Ola. This provides best entrepreneurship scenario where one can get the highest possible returns with zero inventory.Bhavish Aggarwal is became the youngest rich man of India in 2015. Today, the valuation of Ola hailing services is USD 3.5 billion. In Feb 2017, Ola raised 350 million dollar from existing and new investors. Bhavish Aggarwal had received the 'billionth award South Asia 2013'. He has reached at the peaks in a very early age and awarded as 'Best startup of the year' by IAMAI. By listing in '30 under 30' by Hindustan times and Forbes.

Exploration"There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars." - Jack Kerouac. I love travelling, especially to mountains. I am travelling since 2012. I was in 12th standard at that time and till now I have covered 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh along with some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. Moreover I have also done some treks in Himalayas. During this I have learnt number of things. First is that nature is the supreme power and we should respect it. Second, is the amazing feeling of meeting locals of these hill stations and sharing experiences with them. I mostly prefer home stay or guest house over expensive hotels. People in mountains are so kind hearted that sometimes they offer accommodation at no cost or at very cheap cost. It is extremely sad that we become so selfish and we are running blindly after money but people who are living in such a difficult situations are satisfied with their lives and they are spreading peace and love. I will continue my travel diaries and try to explore more and more in future.

you're my strength when I’m weakyou're the treasure that I seek

I can't imagine the nine months of painI won't let your struggle go in vain

I owe you a lot since you've given me birthno1's like you on this whole earth

Employers are always looking to hire candidates that will be the best fits for their organization. To compliment e d u c a t i o n a l q u a l i fi c a t i o n s a n d p ro fe s s i o n a l achievements, good candidates need to have basic competencies and the right attitude to ensure that they work harmoniously with their team members and are successful with the company. Basic Writing Skills: In any kind of job, employees have to write emails, memos, reports, notes, and other basic forms of communication that are essential for the daily operation of the company. Moreover, even the slightest gap in communication can cause big problems and holdups. Companies are looking for employees who can write well and don’t have to spend a lot of time on written communication. Level of Literacy: Literacy is all about being able to read and understand what one has read. In essential skills tests, candidates are given long passages or even reports to read and summarize. Such tests are created to test the comprehension levels of the candidates as well as their analytical abilities. Work Well With Others: Employers are looking for job candidates who do not hesitate to become part of the community and who do not have a fear of interacting with others. They want employees who are confident about themselves and who are willing to take charge

when they are required to. At work, employees have to deal with clients and others they are not familiar with. In essential skills tests, candidates will often be asked to work with other candidates in finishing a task, and they may have to take part in group sessions. This is to test how confident the candidate is when others are present.Basic Math Skills: It is the skill of being able to do basic math quickly and without the aid of calculators takes years to acquire and is usually honed when we are all at school. Most essential skills tests are designed to check how fast candidates can correctly complete basic math and logic problems. Companies will not ask to perform complicated calculus problems in the essential skills test section, even if domain of work requires knowledge of advanced math skills. Such core skills are tested in additional interview rounds. Logical analysis is something that takes experience to develop, but it basically tests candidates common sense.Presentation Skills: Many companies test the ability of the candidates to present information in a coherent manner. Candidates are tested on whether they are able to hold the attention of the audience, and their level of confidence and nervousness. Presentation skills are tested for those who are vying for marketing and business jobs.

Self-Motivation -Key Ingredients to Revive It

If you want to succeed in life, a person needs to be able to learn continuous self motivation. This drives us internally and externally to succeed in our endeavors. Self motivation is not only about work and business; it can be about anything that we want to attain in life and to learn a new skill. So the secret to continuous self motivation lies in:1. Keep a positive attitude: We can’t choose or control our circumstance, but can choose our attitude towards our circumstances. One should remain optimistic that you can reach finish line.2. We should set goals that are simple, easy and achievable and then share it with our family and friends.3. We should write down our goals and put it in one place where we can often see it as whenever we see and read our note, we will feel refreshed and inspired by the emotional reward.4. We should take a break when it seems difficult to handle the things but we should never give up on the things.5. We should reward ourselves for achieving our goals by giving pat on the back for conquering the small battles. In this way, our self-esteem goes high and self motivation becomes easier.6. Know Yourself: one must know about his /her likes, dislikes, strengths weaknesses so as to remain motivated.7. We should be gentle with ourselves: Stop comparing the accomplishments in our life with those of our neighbor. There are many people who are smarter than us. The moment we can embrace this notion, we are free to explore, follow what excites us, ignore what they do, or how they do it, and focus on you.8. We should hack the way our brain perceives our new habits: Recently, I began waking up two hours earlier than usual during the week. Instead of viewing it as two hours less I get to sleep, I view it as two extra hours to my day allowing me to add a full workday per week.9. We should do what we love, find interesting and then get proficient at it. Success dwells at the fulcrum of passion and excellence.10. Focus: The most important aspect for being self motivated is being focused, without focus one cannot achieve anything not even Motivation. Mansi Sachdeva, MBA 3rd E, 1625017

Essential Skills Tests in HR

This is a story of my mom and her dreams. She had a dream of learning how to drive a scooty and her dreams Means a lot to me. As mothers are the only one in the family who sacrifices her dreams while making others to fulfill their dreams, so one day I realized this thing and took decision of helping my mother fulfilling her dream. I arranged scooty and told my mom that I will fulfill your dream I want you to be independent. I told to her that"You can and You will win". The spark In her eyes triggered my enthusiasm many times. As I was not an expert in teaching how to drive but I took control over my negative thoughts and started with the process. We started with very good pace but one day we met with a small accident in which me and my mom got injured which placed phobia in my mother's mind and this was challenge for me but I motivated her in the same way she motivates me by giving examples at that time my mom said " Now you treat me like as if you are my parent and I am your child " Now this makes my resolution even more stronger .She also supported me by showing me full interest in learning scooty .So day by day we practiced and I got successful in making my mother drive Scooty with no fear. We bought Scooty for my mother and at that moment I realise what Actually happiness is , to make your parents happy and help them in achieving their dreams as they do. At the end, it was a learning experience for me that it's not the age which matters it's the motivation and the will power which makes you learn the things.

Travel DiariesMy journey to Budapest, Hungary in 2016 to attend a conference helped create memories which will stay with me forever. Beautiful city of Budapest, the capital of Hungary is bisected by river Danube into two parts, Buda and Pest. I was fortunate to have stayed in Buda, a hilly and historic area blessed with a panoramic view of river Danube and Pest. The entire Buda area is soaked in history which reminds of ancient legends, wars and significant events. I was mesmerised by the rich architecture which made every monument unique in itself. There is lot which the city of Budapest has to offer to tourists. Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church, Buda Castle, magnificent Parliament building on the bank of Danube, Farmer's Market, Chain Bridge, Hero's Square are some of the most visited places . The city is known for thermal medicinal springs which attract tourists from all parts of world. Owing to my packed schedule, I could only visit some of the places in Buda. Sparing couple of hours, I made a quick visit to Pest area and found it to be modern with leading retail shops, offices and restaurants. Buda- pest presents a wonderful amalgamation of history and modernity. The last day offered a chance to visit Eger, a wine producing region in Hungary. It was a lifetime experience to witness the wine making and wine tasting process. Words fall short for expressing the unparalleled beauty of the city of Budapest. TIME: The Real Guru

We, human beings are always in the state of complaining mode. At times, we blame god for being partial in various at- tributes. We often fail to understand why there is a huge gap between have and have-not?s, why some people are blessed while other does not? Why we cannot enjoy the luxuries of life which others can. But have you ever thought of one important thing where god has never been biased. He has given everyone equal opportunity in absolute term to rich and poor, blessed and unblessed, healthy and unhealthy, boy or girl. Bingo you got it right, it is time management! Irrespective of our caste, creed, cadre, we all have been blessed with equal time opportunity. We all have 24hours a day to make the best use of it. The effective utilization of time will make all the difference in our life. It is one of the impor tant factors which will decide our fortunes in the long run. You think of any great personality, may it be Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Mr. Narendra Modi, Mr. Ratan Tata, Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani; they all are what they are because they understand and respect the importance of time management. Time is the only thing which is really perishable in absolute terms. You can regain health, wealth, success, happiness but not time. Once it is gone, it is gone. You could never compensate the loss of time in your entire life. Students, you are at the cross road of your career where you are responsible to create your identity in your personal and professional world. The single most important attribute which helps you to achieve it is right investment in time management. Hope you make the best use of it and fly high with lots of health, wealth, success and happiness.

Real Life Tips for P. I.

Social Marketing versus Societal Marketing - A Comparison Many a time’s people have confused social and societal marketing with even the marketers sometime not getting to understand that both these terms are completely opposite to each other. And the basic objective behind both these processes is totally different. The overall objective that both these processes have been used to achieve are 180 degrees opposite to each other. So I just thought to try and shed some light on both these topics. This question of difference between both the marketing processes came up in front of me at a workshop that I was attending at my workplace on Marketing Insights, an approach that people teaching the Marketing course can adopt to teach the subject in a better way. At that moment the resource person told us the difference and we got to know that what the exact difference between the two was.

Then a few days back again this topic came in front of me through some article and I thought about sharing this with all of you. For understanding the difference, let’s have a look at the definitions first.Social Marketing: It is a marketing function that is used by the organizations to commercially spread a social message so that it can benefit the individuals and the society on the whole by educating the people and society about a social cause to improve their wellbeing. Societal Marketing: - It is a marketing function in which the organizations identify the needs and wants of the target market and then align the marketing activities of an organization in such a manner that their marketing efforts are socially responsible and thereby help the organization in gaining the trust of the society by having an image of a socially responsible organization, but still remaining profitable.

Thus we can say that in societal marketing the main focus of the organization is still earning profits, moving the business forward, but by still keeping the interest of the society in mind. On the other side social marketing focuses on improvement in living standards of people living in societies by making improvements in the way they live their lives. So basically it aims on imparting benefits to individuals and societies and not on profits as such. Then there are some campaigns which focus on the societal marketing concept like the ones used by Archies cards where they contributed Re. 1 from every card purchased towards the UNICEF programs, then the redesigning the logo of Videocon to green to show the consumers the importance of being green and telling them that the products designed by Videocon take care of the environment and do not harm it at all.

Then ADIDAS / NIKE are also working on a number of projects , all community based like better pay for local workers in the under- developed countries, avoiding under-age employees, support for local community sports, offer of free sports gears for talents. Also various automobile manufacturers are focusing more on producing CNG cars and other cars that can run either on electricity, solar energy or any other hybrid fuels that do not produce much pollutants and are not only environmental friendly but it is also very economical. Then McDonald’s has also tried to contribute its bit by using the recycled paper and cardboard packaging, by using light weight paper in straws, paper bags and other articles used for packaging etc.I hope that I have been able to shed some light on these two very important concepts of marketing and that this post can help the readers in getting an in depth understanding of the difference between both these marketing processes.

Mentoring is an effective method of helping inexperienced individuals develop and progress in their lives and profession. India, a country which is always known for its Guru-Shishya Prampara in earlier days where Mentoring used to be the topmost responsibility of teachers apart from education. But why Mentoring is losing its shine now a days? Here we will talk about the secrets & benefits behind successful mentoring. Here are the keys to establishing a successful mentoring relationship:Develop a Relationship of Trust: Relationships need to be built before any effective mentoring can take place. An environment of trust and mutuality must be established. Begin each relationship with a getting to know you session. The mentor should greet the mentee warmly and help the mentee identify his or her professional needs and goals. The mentor should learn about the mentee's educational background and experience, and share information about his or her own background and experience. The mentor can then continue to build upon the mentees strengths, needs, and goals throughout the mentoring period.Define Roles and Responsibilities: of both the mentor and the mentee clearly. Questions to consider include: What will the role of the mentor be? What types of mentoring will be most effective? What are the responsibilities of the mentee and mentor? For example, the mentee may be required to attend specific training given by the mentor or complete a certain number of mutually determined goals during the mentoring period.Establish Short and Long Term Goals: Mentors and mentees are required to work together to develop mutually agreed upon goals These goals become the basis for the mentoring activities A long-term goal could be to facilitate ongoing classroom activities & assignments using the materials in a variety of experiences. The mentor would then support the mentee in reaching these goals. Mentors need to provide constructive feedback to mentees on goal progression. Active listening. Mentors must be skilled at actively listening to concerns. Feelings are important, and greater trust is established when a mentee feels he or she can safely share thoughts and feelings with the mentor. Timing is everything. Mentors mustbe sensitive to the timing of feedback. If emotions are high or a mentee seems defensive, mentors need to back off and reschedule another time for giving feedback or address the perceived barriers. Value each other's feedback. Even experi-enced teachers can learn new ways of thinking and doing things. Mentors and mentees must value and be responsive to each other's feedback.Collaborate to Solve Problems: Be collaborative in solving problems. Mentors should encourage mentees to take risks and do things differently by implementing creative solutions. Mentors can improve the outcome of their mentoring by doing the following together: Assess the outcome together. The mentor and mentee should be reflective and discuss the effectiveness of the activity. Try another solution, if needed. It is important for mentors to remember that there are many different ways to address an issue and that the mentor's way may not be the most effective solution for the mentee.Celebrate successful results.

Mentoring Basics for Faculty

Importance of Live Projects for Students To give real life exposure to real world, students have been motivated regularly to conduct as many live projects as possible along with their curriculum. A live project could be defined as a time bound negotiation between industry and educational institutions wherein students have been offered virtual internships sourced directly from industry. Stipend and certificate may be offered to students for successful completion of the projects. These are of shorter duration. Either project or Object Oriented methodology could be used prior to initiating for a live product. Effective planning is required to complete project well in time. Good interaction between team members is required. Quality policy must be followed Impact of any change to be made in project must be analysed thoroughly before making. Proper documentation as per standards is required while conducting live project.

Mantras for Group Discussion and Personal Interviews Be as natural as possible. Do not try and be someone you are not. Be yourself. A group discussion is your chance to be more vocal. The evaluator wants to hear you speak.Take time to organize your thoughts. Think of what you are going to say. Seek clarification if you have any doubts regarding the subject. Don't start speaking until you have clearly understood and analyzed the subject. Work out various strategies to help you make an entry: initiate the discussion or agree with someone else's point and then move onto express your views.Opening the discussion is not the only way of gaining attention and recognition. If you do not give valuable insights during the discussion, all your efforts of initiating the discussion will be in vain.Your body language says a lot about you, your gestures and mannerisms are more likely to reflect your attitude than what you say. Language skills are important only to the effect as to how you get your points across clearly and fluently. Be assertive not dominating; try to maintain a balanced tone in your discussion and analysis.

Food For Thought : Placement Placement is an opportunity to learn and gain new skills. You should set goals and milestones in order to assess your progress and achievements. Discuss these goals with your supervisor and discuss areas of improvement, and learning outcomes. This is an opportunity to test a potential career option and the more you expose yourself to, the better assessment you can make. A great first job can go a long way in paving the road for a rewarding career. This is the reason campus placements occupy a student’s mind right from the first day of professional college. But approaching them in a systematic manner, is a must.Step 1: Build attractive resume: Start by reading maximum articles on resumes, online and develop your own understanding of what constitutes a good resume. The layout must be clean, avoid unnecessary clutter, fancy fonts or colours. Keep the text sharp by editing out unnecessary words but at the same time highlighting our strengths. Step 2: Know the opportunities: Talk to the concerned person and keep abreast of knowledge regarding companies visiting the campus, the roles on offer and their selection processes.Step 3 : Practice for written tests: Talking of hurdles, If you don’t get through the written tests (aptitude or technical), you don’t get to see those smart company executives who will eventually hand over your job offer letter . Step 4 : Learn new thing about group discussions: One, surf the Internet for some good tips on GDs for the ground rules. Then form a GD practice group along with some serious fellow students. GDs can be tricky affairs because you need to walk a fine line between being too aggressive and too meek. You can’t hog all the limelight, yet you can’t hide in the background. You can’t be too loud or too soft. Practice well to get the balance right .Step 5 : Practice interviewing: Read all you can about interviews, by logging on to the Internet. Create, collate or download a list of common interview questions. Think about your strengths/weaknesses, long term/short term career goals, what motivates you, skills, career interests. Develop and answer your list of questions. Step 6: File all certificates: Get together all your educational certificates including Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, technical certifications, NCC/ NSS certificates every documentary proof of achievement so far. Arrange them neatly in a file folder, have them at hand during your interview . Step 7 : Get a set of formals: Always prefer formals light plain shirt and formal trousers, or college dress will be preferable and plain black leather shoes.Step 8 : Be prepare to face the interview: Just before the interview, think of your past successes and achievements. Get into a positive, confident mood. It is not the time to remember the weaknesses in your preparation. Just go out there and have fun. After you are done with the interview, do graciously ask for their feedback after the whole process even if you are not selected. It will help you perform better for the upcoming companies. If they refuse then walk out. Mr. Simerjeet Singh BawaAssistant Professor, CBSA
