A lack of occupational qualification in combination with a small set of so called soft skills reduce the chances for a lot of young people. In Mannheim alone there are currently around 600 unemployed people under the age of 25. GOALS: Create opportunities for young people to gain the experiences they need, both to increase their occupational qualifications and their self-esteem in order to improve their chances on the primary job market. CONCEPT: Create a mobile soup business that delivers soups to regional enterprises. The soups are prepared and sold by young and unemployed people. ACHIEVEMENTS: We have initiated a collaboration with „arbeit für alle e.V.“ which is a non-profit institution temporarily employing CHALLENGE: In today’s society children are experiencing less and less family culture and therefore losing traditional values and skills, like cooking skills. As the teenagers grow up, this can lead to some of society’s biggest current problems: malnutrition and obesity. This does not only have a deep impact on the quality of life of the affected persons, but also on the social welfare system. On the other side of the age spectrum there is an increasing number of elderly people who are enthusiastic, sprightly and active, and most importantly who have abundant time. GOALS: The potential of these so called „go-go‘s“ should be used to transfer traditional values to the younger generation. Both parties get together in a cooking event in order to bridge the gap between generations and to mitigate its negative consequences for society. Seniors with rich life experience impart their knowledge, values and a sense of family spirit to the younger generation. Children gain practical skills, learn to work in a team and buy the groceries to improve their budgeting skills. CHALLENGE: There are about 15,000 students studying German in Vietnam, without being properly equipped with academic books to prepare themselves for future studies in Germany. At the same time, Vietnam is an emerging economy with huge social inequalities. Many Vietnamese are not participating in the enormous growth of their country. GOALS: Support Vietnamese students in their efforts to study German and enable them to realize their own economic opportunities. Simultaneously generate funds for micro credits for sustainable small-scale business projects in Vietnam. The overall goal is to contribute to the long term sustainable growth of the Vietnamese economy. low qualified young people. They will function as a carrier for the project. For a solid foundation and to finance the mobile soup concept, current processes were optimized thoroughly. Based on a copious customer survey we adjusted the product portfolio in the fields of lunch, catering and café, increasing their margins. By installing a profit analysis- tool, the cost structure was made more transparent with the ultimate goal of saving up to 30,000 Euro within one year. These savings will be reinvested in the roll-out of the soup concept (planned for Sept 09) and in financing new apprenticeship positions. Through the relaunch of the organization’s café we were able to gain more customers and create a gradual sales uplift. As this has just happened in Mid-June it is too early for a fair evaluation. However, in its first week the new „Café Noi“ has tripled the number of costumers and had as much sales as normally in one month. In addition to the completely new look of the café the success is based on our new pricing strategy and a refill-cup-concept that hits a nerve among the target group of pupils and students. The project work itself is only a few month old and the pipeline is full of already approved next steps. Due to the success of the optimized „Café Noi“ an electric car for the soups has already been reserved which brings us closer to our final goal of the mobile soup business. Their self-esteem can increase by experiencing the impact they have on the students. CONCEPT: We ask seniors from a senior-citizen circle and children from the Wilhelm-Wundt secondary school to be participants in our cooking event which provides a platform for a generational exchange. To ensure sustainability, regular sessions of three hours will be included in the curriculum from September on. A recipe book will be created and sold by the students; the realized profits will be used to sustain the project. To allow the intergenerational exchange to be extended to a broader public, a cooking event will be held regularly apart from school in a professional kitchen. ACHIEVEMENTS: In a pilot run three seniors and twelve children aged 14 to 16 cooked vegetable soup and apple pies in an open and communicative atmosphere. They jointly prepared a healthy meal at a reasonable price. The feedback of both, school administration and seniors regarding the underlying idea of the project was very positive. The children demonstrated high motivation in preparing a healthy meal and were eager to learn from the seniors. Additionally, three regional newspapers published detailed articles on the cooking event. CONCEPT: Collect appropriate German textbooks and send them to Vietnam where they are distributed by the local SIFE Team of the University of Ha Noi. To ensure that the books reach the target persons they are not given away for free but sold at an appropriate price. The generated income is used to support micro-financing projects started by the Vietnamese SIFE Team. ACHIEVEMENTS: We collected 640 books and raised the money for shipping them to Vietnam; we ensured the long-term supply with books by gaining several donating institutions as partners. We started negotiations with logistic companies for future economic shipping. TEAM SUSTAINABILITYThe SIFE year 2008/09 has brought great amendments to our team sustainability. Due to intensive recruiting measureswe increased our active members by many bachelor students from the 1st and 2nd semester who will ensure the long-term success of our SIFE Team. They can count on a steady team organization which will ensure the effective futurefunctionality. Despite high fluctuations due to study-abroad programs and shortened study times, the team has organizeditself efficiently to adapt to the these circumstances. Moreover, the group cohesion was enhanced substantially throughregular team building events.
