‘Loud’ voice of thanks to all involved

St Pius Cricket, encompassing the Cricket Club, the Players, the Parents, the teaching & admin staff and of course the invaluable grounds staff at Oxford Falls, if nothing else can sign off on one the busiest seasons ever. Mine won’t be the only voice of thanks to all concerned but certainly one of the loudest, without the help of all, little would be achieved. As with all P&F sub clubs our committee must represent the many competing interests within the school environment. Players & their parents hold equal billing to the interests of the school, the larger P&F organization as well as the respective sporting bodies that provide the competitions to play in. Not only do our committee members sit in our own meetings but they represent SPX Cricket as

delegates at district meetings, they help form a balanced and pro-active strategy aimed at the participation of juniors at all levels and age groups. For this the broad St Pius X Community thanks all volunteers, parental and school, for their sustained and tremendous efforts, long may they continue to enjoy being part of making everything very special. As I hope you will enjoy reading, our Manly & North Shore District teams all played solid competitive seasons. A district highlight for me personally was the fourth year in a row SPX reached the prestigious and very competitive NSJCA U14 Championship final. Of course the return of the ISA Div 1 Premiership is outstanding and there is

a great deal of pride in seeing this finally occur. Not only is this the result of quality players and coaching staff but a reflection on the strength and determination of the lower grades from which these players have come from. In developing a pathway players gain the urge to be a part of it all, earn their colours and share the glory cross the club. This year a massively brave step was taken to move training into a group program, add professional coaches and utilise the amazing sporting facilities at Oxford Falls. Of course this was never going to be easy and many lessons were learnt by the organising committee. But the delivery of quality training was a breath of

fresh air for the players and a huge stress relief on the parent support resources. Looking ahead and the supply of high quality players to feed the senior open teams looks strong, the biggest challenge for the next few years might well be dealing with excess supply. Alex Slack (above doing what he enjoys most, coaching) is retiring as SPX CC Secretary after an unstinting four-year spell in post.

I hope you enjoy reading this year’s SPX CC Annual Review. My thanks to all of the contributors, without whom the review would not be possible. Danny John, Editor

Finances on the right track Last season, the Cricket Club’s operations were very simple financially. Monies received from the P&F and trivia night ($14,280) were almost entirely spent on coaching and an amount set aside for a one-third contribution for the new Oxford Falls scoreboard. The CC ended the year with a surplus of income over expenditure of $4,952 and this, together with accumulated bank accounts, will provide for our contribution to the scoreboard. (This cost provision is not included in the expenses graph). Coaching activities changed, from not holding the December coaching clinic as in prior years to weekly coaching provided by Mosman Cricket Club coaches. For the first time, this coaching extended to the junior school for their Oxford Falls Thursday sport. Garry White, Treasurer

Delivering on the promise

Of all the words that sum up the season just past, three come to mind readily: perseverance, promise and planning. As those of us who are involved in either committee work, coaching or managing know, each new campaign begins with a great deal of promise but it also requires a lot of planning behind the scenes. And for those reasons, you need perseverance. For me, that is best summed up in a number of different ways this year. I know a fair amount of space is taken up in the pages of this annual report about the 1st X1 (which will rightly be

reinforced at presentation night) but I think it is only fair for me to add my words of congratulation to the squad – and in particular to captain Nick McCamley, cricket convenor and coach David Reay and his coaching colleague Andrew Sadlier – for the success in winning the ISA Premiership. This is no mean feat given the high standard of competition at ISA level and it is a testament to the huge amount of work that has gone into the different teams and support provided to individual players over the past three years since we last brought home the title.

Understandably, there have been some lows during this period but the planning aspect (in adding additional coaching support), the perseverance in sticking with a season plan, not just a game one, and promise showed by both the team and individual players has literally paid off with the squad delivering the Minor Premiership as well as the Grand Final ISA shield. What is equally pleasing is the recognition at representative level of the college’s leading players with spinner Dermott Beattie being selected for both the NSW and CIS U15 squads, captain Nick McCamley as skipper of the ISA X1 joined by Beattie and Michael Roberts in the same team while Ned McDermott-Healey earnt a place in the

Combined Country and City Schools team. And it wasn’t just about the 1st X1. After what was by everyone’s admission a topsy-turvy season that could have seen them relegated, the 2nd X1 - last season’s ISA Division 2 Grand Finalists – fought back in terrific style to grab a place in the Div 2 semi-finals and just missed out in replicating last year feat in a tight contest with St Pat’s. Equally promising was the success of the younger teams with the U14 SPX Red team making their divisional championship grand final and the U13 SPX Black squad reaching a Cup final. SPX Red had an extremely consistent season, coming second in their division and rightly earning their place in the show-down, only to lose by 19 runs against Lane Continued next page

Cove Smith. SPX Black deserve plaudits for the way they battled hard throughout the season as they matched each defeat with a stirring victory. From a planning perspective, there is a lot of talent coming through in those age groups – as underlined by SPX Blue and White - which is promising for the senior teams in years to come. As for perseverance, I’m pleased that we will soon see a physical sign of a great deal of planning that has been put into a particular project, one which has also taken up a lot of the committee’s thinking over the past few years. It has been a goal of ours to install an electronic scoreboard to replace the now very old manual one on the top Oval at Oxford Falls and I’m delighted that the new digital screen will be in place for coming season. It is only right that the best ground in the ISA should have the best facilities alongside it and the installation of the new scoreboard is fully in keeping with our plans to ensure Oxford Falls remains the ground in the ISA competition that our

rivals aspire to have. But equally importantly, this $20,000 investment is a reward for the support of players and their parents across SPX CC over many years and I’m

my hard-working colleagues on the committee, in particular secretary Alex Slack, treasurer Garry White and scoreboard project lead Martin Carroll who are all stepping down at this year’s AGM, Principal John Couani, college cricket convenor David Reay, senior staff Matt Stearn and Alex Listo, and most of all the parent coaches, managers and supporters, without who cricket at St Pius College would not be possible.

pleased we have been able to repay this loyalty in such a practical and beneficial way – one which will serve the college and the club for many, many years to come. Finally, I would like to thank

To the victors, the memories

In early June of 2014, the Ist X1 coach David Reay sat 20 boys down in a room at school and told them a plain truth, one each of them knew too clearly. “We lost it ourselves last season so anything short of an ISA premiership this year will be a disappointment.” Put another way, he was telling everyone there this would be our best chance of winning an ISA premiership while we were at Pius. Our success this year did not happen overnight, however. It was the product of a tough pre-season, a hard year before that and three seasons of work in all. Looking back then to the 2012/13 season, the likes of Max Magee, Nick Onslow and Harry Heaney (all Year 8) and Michael Roberts (Year 9) received their Baggy Blue in a team, led by Tom Sproule, that fielded just three members from Year 12. The in-experience and lack of physical strength both with bat and ball resulted in us winning only one game, finishing 5th out of the six teams. While it was a year to forget from one perspective, those younger team members who still had a few years ahead of them –myself included - learnt a great deal indeed. Another tough winter went by and we were back in that room listening to Mr Reay talk about what was ahead of us. That next year we ended up finishing 3rd in the ISA with five wins and four losses but enjoyed success on the Queensland tour going undefeated to bring home the cup and in doing so provided valuable experience for the likes of Luke Humphrey to push his selection in the Firsts. This was the season that David Reay was so keen to remind us about – one where we dominated in a few games but then saw us ease off the

pressure with the result that a shot at the final was dashed because of a wash-out in the semis. The team was gutted, especially the Year 12 boys, Sean Reidy, Ben Kennedy, Tom Slack, Sam King, Danisha Ediriwira and Mark Loughlan who would never get the chance again to represent the school in an ISA final. The rest of us then vowed to go two better and secure a premiership for all of those who missed out on the opportunity to win one. We also knew we had a huge opportunity to leave Pius cricket in a good place. I had learnt a lot from the captaincy of Ben Bury, Steven Birch, Tom Sproule, Steven Khor and Sean Reidy. What they did in certain situations and how they handled themselves when things weren’t quite going their way were invaluable experiences that I hoped to share with those boys who would come after me. With Dermott Beattie, Tom Diggins, Jackson Brislan, Matt Kennedy, Christian King and Pat Dermott receiving their

baggies, the 2014-15 season started well with two dominating performances over rivals Aloys. But it was the blooding of Tim Robertson and James Brown against the Mosman Green Shield team that saw some of the senior players realise they were going to have to step up through the year. Both Tim and James have big roles to play in the development of Pius cricket over their remaining years. We then went four wins on the trot, with the game against St Pats at Oxford Falls showing this side was not just a team but - as much as a cliché as it might be – one that had become a family. I know for a fact that every player and their parents were proud to be a part of it and this was noticeable to any spectator watching. It was difficult therefore when we suffered our first loss – against Oakhill, an embarrassing defeat to be sure, but one from which we learnt and made sure didn’t happen again. To that end, we met the challenge handed to us by Mr Reay: first by winning the minor premiership and then the

Championship itself. Our record also speaks volumes – eight wins out of ten games played, 1,651 runs scored, 939 conceded and 92 wickets taken. Compare that to St Stannies, our Grand Final opponents. While they notched up 1,622 runs they gave away 1,248 runs for 86 wickets taken. This season then has meant everything to the boys and myself. I don’t say this lightly but an ISA Premiership is the one thing I have wanted from my time at Pius. If someone asked me tomorrow would I rather an ISA Premiership or a 90+ ATAR without hesitation I would say the ISA Premiership! The mate-ship displayed is something I have never experienced before and that is what made it special. The banter at training, the good spirited sledging, the constant niggle from Diggo and the smack talk of Kingo “Test me Sads” and “You’re on the ropes” all made this season the way it was. I cannot thank Mr Reay and Andrew Sadlier enough for the time and commitment they have given over the years. Yes, we had our ups and downs but we became stronger as a result. To all the parents and siblings who were at every game cheering us on to victory, sharing a loss or providing the best lunches and teas around, your work did not go un-noticed and every player was glad to share the success with you. Recognition too for the work of the cricket committee in giving the boys in every age group the best opportunity possible to play ISA cricket. And last but not least to my teammates there is this. Before we took to the field in the Grand Final for the last innings in the last game some of us would play in school colours, I said these words: “In 30 years time you will not remember a single thing about your time at Pius if we don’t win today. But if we do win you will remember every mate here and every single detail about this game.” To the victors then the memories and a season never to be forgotten.

Championship performance by a

This playing group commenced training in early August 2014 with the stated aim of winning the ISA Division 1 competition. The playing group worked hard and very well together, each player knowing and executing his role within the team. There were no champion players upon which this team relied, each player contributing his part to our overall success. The 1st XI was characterised by never giving up and playing confident aggressive cricket. Along the way some records were broken: highest 1st XI!innings total 3/394 (v Blue Mountains Grammar School) and!highest 1st XI individual total: Michael Roberts 188* (v

Blue Mountains Grammar School). This effort paid off when the squad first secured the Minor Premiership when they won eight out of their ten round matches and then capped that off by winning the Championship with a semi-final victory over Oakhill and then the Grand Final triumph over St Stanislaus College. Congratulations to the 1st XI 2014/15. Thank-you to parents of the 1st XI for the overwhelming support provided. The parents of the 1st XI scored and supported as well as catered for every match at Oxford Falls. The best lunch and afternoon tea in the ISA!

Highs and lows of a rollercoaster ride From relegation threat to coming within a whisker of a spot in the Division 2 Grand Final: the 2014-15 season had it all for the 2nd X1 whose roller-coaster ride often left hearts in the mouths of their supporters and then arms in the air on the field in celebration of hard-fought victories. It was that kind of campaign where early promise following two successive wins fell away and was replaced by the despair of five defeats, albeit close ones in most games, only to see the boys then dig deep and secure themselves a semi-finals berth. An almost new-look squad after last year’s Grand Final runners-up team meant it was going to be a tough ask for these boys to replicate that success but there was no doubt the talent was there. The encouraging thing was that by the end of the season those

selections had begun to pay off which augurs well for the next season since ten of this year’s squad will be in the running for 1st and 2nd X1 opportunities come September. Such was the tightness of the Division 2 competition this year that any side could have ended up winning the title and there

was no doubt we had our chances. We actually beat the Grand Final premiers St Andrews in a close-run match at Oxford Falls earlier on in the season and in the three games we ended up playing against finalists St Pat’s, we came very close to winning all of them. We also shared the honours in the two games

we played against the other semi-finalists, Chevalier College, although “Chev” did inflict our worst defeat of the season in a match that saw us propping up the division immediately after the Christmas and New Year break. That game typified our season: one week absolutely nothing went right; the

next we played like a title-winning side. Nowhere was that better underlined than in our return match against Oakhill College. That was a game we needed to win – not because we had a mathematical chance of making the semis’ if we did but to actually give us a chance of avoiding the likelihood of relegation to Division 3. That threat and the fact that Oakhill had a few weeks before publicly written off our prospects of securing a last four spot spurred the boys into action. Despite losing the previous week in the tightest of matches against St Pat’s – by one wicket – the team rose to the occasion and in arguably the best bowling and fielding performance of the season dismissed Oakhill for 88 and then knocked over that total for the loss of just one wicket thanks to a great partnership between captain Nic Frayne and fellow opener Joe Unwin. What was even sweeter about that victory is that the results of the next game – when we beat St Stanislaus and Oakhill lost to “Chev” – meant we went through to the semi-finals at Oakhill’s expense by the slimmest of margins. Cricket is indeed a strange game but a great leveller too. Such was our inconsistent form during the season, especially with the bat, that we couldn’t maintain that form against St Pat’s in the semis, although yet again our bowlers did the job in restricting the home team to 134. A top and middle order collapse saw us struggling badly but then James White and Liam Carroll almost got us into the Grand Final with a fabulous 52 run partnership which eventually saw us fall short by 19 runs. A quick look at the statistics would, at first glance, suggest then that it was an average season for the Seconds – certainly only four wins out of 11 games might underline that. But we all know that the measure of success and failure in this game is the difference between a wicket falling at the wrong time or a catch going down when you least need it. That was the case with us where at least four games could and should have gone our way. However, by the end of the season that didn’t really matter as the stats also show that we were semi-finalists and only missed the Grand Final by a handful of runs. More to the point we played each and every match in the spirit and manner in which this

game is supposed to be and in doing so the 2nd X1 forged a truly champion team, a team that enjoyed playing together because they wanted to be there for each other on the pitch - and off it. Team hit their purple patch by

season’s end This new U16-18s squad proved to be a force to contend with says coach Mark Kelleher

SPX Purple was created with players from six different teams from the previous summer and others returning after a long spell. The team combined players from Years 8 to 12 with five players playing above their age group. All were looking forward to the challenges of the U16-18 MWJCA competition. SPX Purple were always competitive and gave a spirited performance. The first half of the season started slowly with a washout and five losses, however these included a number of close results, which could have gone either way and a couple of

good saves against possible outright losses. To their credit, SPX Purple finished strongly in the second half of the season with some impressive wins and another agonising loss in the final over of the last game after an unfortunate late collapse. The competition was made up of a closely matched strong top four with the remaining seven teams being evenly matched. Rather than relying on outstanding individual performances and representative players, SPX Purple relied on a good solid team effort and the even contributions from all players throughout

the season. This was most evident by the top five highest scores being scored by five different players and our top group of bowlers taking a similar amount of wickets. It was evident by the end of the season that SPX Purple had gelled as a solid unit. Whilst they may not have set the world on fire in terms of results their season was still a great success. The boys should all be proud of their own efforts and contributions to the team, particularly the way they represented their school with spirit, passion and good sportsmanship which was commendable reflecting the spirit of St. Pius X College. A huge thanks must go to our fantastic team support group, including Mark Halliday (Manager), Gerard Plummer (Umpire), Brendan Roser, Paul

McDermott, Maggie Mullane and Jenny Maggiora.

Notable Performances

v St Augustine’s White

SPX Purple scored their lowest innings total in their first game against equal first placed St Augustine’s White, this possibly being due to a rain interrupted pre-season and no training. Despite some excellent bowling, a few dropped catches allowed our opponent off the hook. At 3/11 in our 2nd innings and staring at a big defeat, Ryan Kelleher dug in deep and combined with his team mates to bat for 30 overs to help prevent an outright loss.

v SPX Yellow

An excellent bowling display dismissed SPX Yellow for 139 in the 42nd over, including Tom Mullane’s 3/10. The run chase was well on target with only a handful of runs to go and plenty of overs available and wickets in hand, however a late collapse resulted in a nail biting loss in the last over.

v St Augustine’s Gold Despite being a man down and borrowing an U13 player, SPX Purple put up one of their best performances of the

season against the equal first St Augustine’s Gold, an older and more experienced team. In the field Purple were struggling against some big hitting however awesome spells by Will Roser and Tom McKern, combined with excellent catching saw the game turn in our favour and the opposition dismissed all out in the 35th. After a solid start to our innings and the run chase in hand including an excellent 64 run partnership to Rory Beattie and Ryan Kelleher, it was soon followed by a mid and low order

collapse however overall it was a very solid performance.

v Harbord

Purple’s much deserved and long awaited first win finally came in Round 7 with an outstanding century to Will Roser (105 not out, including 17 boundaries), a great 5 wicket haul by Alexander Halliday (5/45) and a fine economical spell by Joshua Maggiora (0/10 off 8 overs). The crowd were on the edge of their seat urging Will on to his century, which finally came in the 10th wicket partnership with Liam O’Neill after numerous tense moments. Will’s good form resulted in a

much-deserved call up to the 2nd XI ISA. The win lead to a solid performance against competition winners Wakehurst and a victory against St Augustine’s Green, highlighted by some top innings by Brendan Plummer and Nick Parker and more good all-round performances by Rory Beattie (38 & 23 runs and 4/20 off 9). v St Augustine’s Red While we fell agonisingly short in the last over, the match was marked by an excellent 50 to Sam Dixon and some classic catches by Will Roser and Liam O’Neill plus good bowling by Liam Connell. Young guns that

came of age SPX Yellow more than held their own against older rivals writes Alex Slack

The SPX Yellow team this season was made up wholly of Year 9 players, all u-15s and all predominantly from last seasons SPX Red team. The committee determined it best to field two under- 18s teams in the Manly District competition simply because of the level of skill across both team groups. It is always a challenge to compete against clubs and schools that field a 1st XI made up of predominantly u-18s, especially when our 1st & 2nd XI players play in a different competition. However we are St Pius X of Chatswood, we play

cricket to win and have fun, in whatever order works best on the day. Having played 10, Won 5, lost 4 and drew one we pretty much finished where we intended. Finishing 5th (possibly 6th depending on the last round result) in the table and still within sight of the champions was a remarkable achievement given the standard of competition this season. Unfortunate injuries post Christmas ended our competitive season early but despite this the players continued to play

high quality cricket and extend themselves both individually and as a team. At this age the players run the game, they are charged with making the right batting order for each circumstance and as parents they are a pleasure to watch. As a coach I couldn’t be more impressed with each and everyone, some will appear in the opens teams in their final seasons of cricket with SPX, some will continue into senior cricket and play for years to come. Others will look back on a season with fond and proud

memories of mateship, camaraderie and fun.

Simply Red: final too tight to mention! The ‘rumps’ of two separate teams from the preceding year formed the Reds this season. Immediately, it was apparent that we had a depth of talent in the team that gave us both a deep bowling pool and a long batting tail. We had big hitters and back-foot subtlety with the bat and we had firebrand ‘quicks’ and reliable ‘tweakers’ with the ball. It took little time for the group to begin to bond and play winning cricket, even if we did so in a peculiar pattern. Three times in a row we won two then lost one. Then, we reversed the order and lost one and won two. For a moment, when the win-loss pattern changed, it looked like we were losing our way as we dropped a couple of matches, including one that was very winnable. However, we came back well with two very exciting wins to complete the ‘regular’ season, and ended-up as runners-up in the U14 Saturday PM Division 1 Minor Premiership competition. From there, we had an exciting, nail-biting last-over victory in the Semi Final against Pirates White. Then, in the Championship Final against Lane Cove Smith we put up a good fight, but were beaten by 18 runs, in a fair reflection of the match. By the end of the minor premiership season, we had three players in the NSJCA Top 20 for batting (Josh, Tom and Nick) and three in the Top 20 for bowling (Luke, Josh and Daniel), with Luke at No 2. Just as importantly, our players who did not get

any accolades all strengthened their games significantly during the season, and all made big contributions to the team, with each having a number of ‘highlight’ matches. Every team needs good direction and support to succeed, and we had that in abundance through our experienced and re-assuring coach James Colgan and manager Brad Quillan plus our many parents and family supporters who were there for the team week in, week out through the entire season.

Rub of the green pays off for new squad The SPX Green team this year was made up of former players from a number of last year’s SPX teams, some from lower age groups plus several new players to the club and the game. Starting out against St Augustine Gold our match was abandoned due to rain after only a few overs bowling. This seemed to instill the determination to play on that carried on during the season, no matter what the odds. Playing in a Division 1 competition where teams had played together for several seasons meant we were the underdog from the start. However, each week the boys turned up ready to meet the opposing team with a readiness that maybe we could win this time. Alas this coveted trophy never came to fruition during the season, even though we were close on a couple of occasions. The fact the majority of our matches were two days games meant that our lack of team maturity was not able to sustain the necessary length of innings. We did manage to keep a few teams honest and caused frustration to others by our tenacity to block and not allow the

‘outright’ win. Whilst the Green team never came to be Gold winners our individual’s players developed during the season and we were able to secure some good performances in all the disciplines of bat, bowl and fielding, which Greg Foley nurtured through his coaching techniques. The new players were able to stretch their skills and develop in the game. In

fact, Marcus became our opening Batsman in the second half of the season who together with Logan caused many a fast bowler to stamp the ground in frustration. In fact in one two day match where we had limited players available and avoiding the ‘follow on,’ Logan was able to score only 2 runs by the aggressive fielding placement in the 25 overs before his forced

retirement, much to the distress of the other coach. It was like watching Geoffrey Boycott at Headingly back as a child in Yorkshire – slow and steady. When it came to getting a few runs on the board we could always rely on Max for a good innings as well as Tim to find the boundary. Zac usually slogged it through the fielders with speed to add to the tally until one of them could stop it in the air and Finn and Cameron contributed solidly with Josh Foley supporting with clear continued next page

instruction to his teammates. When it came to bowling Cameron flew out of the gates and the number of times with the stumps flying on unsuspecting batsmen was a quality to behold. Max was quick and claimed a number of wickets with Zac also causing pain with an improved action. Tim had his way of inflicting damage on the opposition and Luca and Finn also found the mark on several occasions. Josh Foley was a very effective classic spin bowler, taking wickets at a good average. Adrian developed into a deceptively quick bowler while Liaam always tried his best. Alas we suffered with Mr Sundry having the highest score each week but even the less experienced bowlers managed to claim a few wickets. Fielding had its ups and downs with many a dropped catch and attentions waning as the chatter faded during the long matches. However there were some great examples of determination to save a boundary, long throws to cause run outs and Josh Matar demonstrated that diving was required on all occasions when the ball came in his direction. The match of the season was in round 9 against St Augustine Green where Max got his highest score and our bowling and fielding was in good form. Both sides were playing at the edge of their abilities. Losing by 4 runs is hard but the team should be proud of the way they played with great sportsmanship. This and the camaraderie amongst the boys was a stand-out in each match. Every boy is to be congratulated for the way they played each game, treated other and the opposition. Thanks

must go to Andrew Lomas for taking on umpiring duties, Juliette Lorking as lead scorer with Brendan Roser assisting on many occasions. A huge thank you also goes to Greg Foley for coaching and guiding the boys through their development during the year and not forgetting the supplier of snakes for the end of match catching practice.

If there was ever proof needed of two going into one then SPX Black was a great example of that. This year’s team, which played in the NSJCA U-13 Division 2 competition, was fashioned from the two U-12 sides from last year plus a mixture of boys playing for the school for the first time. One of the most pleasing aspects of the season therefore was how the boys came together and played as a team with the stand-out being the way they encouraged each other. They should also be commended on the sportsmanship and the teamwork they displayed throughout the season. This was best underlined by their uncanny ability to win games that, on paper, they really should not have won but they did -

which was a testament to their commitment and never-say-die attitude. As a result, we came out equal over the season from a games played point of view: seven wins and seven losses. There were some good victories and some matches we should have won but missed out on or just got away from us; and of course those unlikely wins which delighted us all. Those all-round performances earnt us a Cup semi-final place against Lane Cove Waugh at Pottery Green – probably the most exciting match all season.

Batting first, we made 9-113 with John Macdonald (22), Joseph Harper (20), Kiefer O’Brien (16) and Harry Clayton (11) helping us to a competitive three-figure score. With their four top order players contributing 40 off the bat, helped by 30 extras, and then a very handy 25 by Allsop, Lane Cove looked to be heading for victory but to our boys credit they never gave up and some fantastic bowling and fielding saw us get home by 3 runs and with a spot in the Final. Unfortunately we just weren’t able to

replicate that performance and despite a closely contested match our opponents St Ives Lee ran out worthy winners. We can now look back and declare that the boys showed great levels of skill with the team being very equal in ability. I would like to thank all of them for a very enjoyable season and to say this: You should be very proud of the way you conducted yourselves on and off the field. Well done. Finally, I would like to thank the parents for all their help and support. Special thanks must go to Mark, Steven and Jonathon for umpiring and to the BBQ king Alex for keeping the boys feed (and the parents). Without this help, the season would not have run as smoothly as it did.

When the U13 Blacks came together little did the boys know how good their season would be writes Fiona Harper

Gilbert Davie: A great spin bowler, who had the knack of getting that crucial wicket when we needed it most. Also extremely reliable in the field, came up with some fantastic run-outs and catches.

Harry Hargreaves: A good all round cricketer, who had success with both the bat and ball. Harry was also a great wicket-keeper, not many got past him.

Daniel Fileman: Daniel was a very reliable fielder and took some great catches as well as some run-outs. His bowling improved greatly throughout the season and was a steady batsman.

Alec Paterson: A steady batsman and bowler who always gave 100%. Alec also proved to be a very reliable fielder and wicket-keeper taking some great catches.

Harry Clayton: Great fielder who had the uncanny ability to know exactly where to stand for those all-important catches. Harry also proved quiet handy with the bat and ball.

Jamie Alexander: A fantastic fielder, with an exceptionally good arm. Not only did he shock the opposition with his pinpoint accuracy but also many of the spectators. He was also a very steady bowler.

Zach Bull: Zach was the quiet achiever of the team and was a very reliable accurate bowler, keeping the opposition to a low score. Zach also improved as a batsman during the year, adding valuable runs when we needed them most.

Rory O’Connell: A fantastic fast bowler who when not taking wickets, kept the oppositions rate to a low score. Rory was also very reliable in the field taking some fantastic catches and was also pretty handy with the bat.

Ryan Pratt: Ryan is a very good all-round cricketer. He could always be relied on and put his best foot forward. Must be in the genes.

Kiefer O’Brien: Kiefer is another player who is good with the bat, ball and in the field – and a very reliable wicket-keeper who always encouraged his teammates.

Luke McManus: Unfortunately Luke broke his wrist, just prior to the season starting and missed the bulk of it. Luke was a very steady batsman and accurate bowler who fitted in well with the team.

Sam Barrell: A very enthusiastic player whose bowling improved throughout the season. He was unlucky not to get more wickets. Sam could also be relied on to add a few quick runs with his hard hitting.

John McDonald: John is a very calm steady batsman, who notched up runs easily. He scored 37 no against Pirates when we desperately needed runs. He is also a very handy bowler again a very good all-round cricketer.

Joseph Harper: Joseph is a good accurate bowler, who could be relied on to keep the run rate down. His patience with the bat towards the end of the year saw him score some much-needed runs for the team.

Team spirit showed the white way forward

For many of the team it was the first time playing for SPX. The excitement and anticipation for the beginning of the season was on display right from the first game where even though the rain caused havoc and caused a wash out all 15 players of the squad showed their commitment, continuing to practice their catches and ensuring the whites would need a wash in preparation for their first match up against Peninsula Sharks at Narrabeen. It was clearly evident from the first game!

that amongst all the boys there was talent across all facets of the game. We saw an outstanding caught & bowled by Oliver Fitzroy

who was playing his first game of cricket and some real gritty batting by both Oliver Sheather and Joe Colgan who ran out of

overs but no doubt with more time at the crease would have caused havoc for the opposition bowlers continued next page

New talent was evident from first game says coach Dave Krizan

excellent fielding with an unassisted run out and catches from all areas of the park. The second game was for all the boys a special occasion - Watkins Oval Oxford Falls was the perfect venue to build on the confidence and team spirit. The opening partnership of Liam Kinna and Joshua Overton stood out along with the batting of Jackson Carrall. All three ensured Pius lay down the foundation which was carried on with ball special mention to Julien Hyde’s 2 for 5 off 3 over’s and Jack Healy’s 1 for 1 off 3 over’s all in all a great team effort ensuring a win savoured at home and celebrated with what would become the standard end of game war cry. Rounds 4, 5 & 6 saw Pius continue on their winning way. The team spirit and camaraderie amongst the boys was a joy to watch. Performances such as Joe Colgan’s 51 not out against St Augustine’s Green, Manav Purohit’s bowling prowess with 2 wickets from 2 overs

against St Augustine’s Red, Oliver Sheather’s 4 for 2 off 2 over’s against Wakehurst Green were a some of the stand out’s as Will Thomson’s 1 for 0 of 2 balls in this winning streak. By now the words of Sizza Sizza Boom was ringing across the northern beaches and in the parent’s ears. Round 7 saw a more formidable task as the Peninsula Sharks proved to be the competitions frontrunners and deservedly so. Even though we were unable to topple the leaders the team in true Pius spirit continued displaying faith in each other by working hard both with bat and in the field. The final game of 2014 was a one sided affair with Pius attempting to finish of the first half of the season with an outright win with Joshua Osborne displaying all round cricket skills with a wicket a catch and a run out all in a day’s work. A new year and the boys were a little slow to get started with a below par performance in the first

game. Nevertheless over the next couple of weeks we saw the resilience of the Pius outfit with some wonderful results and performances to wrap up the season. Performances such as a team hat trick against St Augustine’s Green. Luka Krizan’s 3 for 4 in the same game, Adam Greenwood’s 27 with the bat against the consistent bowling of the Peninsula Sharks in the following week, whilst in our last game of the season David Cass’s opening batting proved to be a thorn in the side of the opposition

and Tom Kennedy’s bowling caused havoc for the Wakehurst batsmen making for a dramatic end to the season. Even though the final games result may not have gone our way the effort, spirit and all round sportsmanship displayed by all members of the team not just in the final game but throughout the whole season was exemplary. Big thanks to our manger David Kennedy and all of the parents for their support and understanding throughout the year. From the coach and all the boys we would like also to especially say thank you to Michael Kinna, Michael Greenwood, John Healy, Pradesh Purohit & James Colgan for their efforts in umpiring and in scoring during game day, - their assistance was as much a reason for the success of the team’s performance during the season as was the tremendous performance and efforts of all members of the squad during the 2014 -2015 campaign.

Blue is the colour, cricket is their game

If you have a liking for roller coasters than you would have enjoyed the ride that Pius Blue took during the 2014/15 Season in the MWJCA competition. The first and most significant challenge was trying to make it to the ground on time and have the boys ready to be at their best by 8am every Saturday morning. The extra challenge with Pius Blue was a combination of Year 5 & 6 boys with many of the players

meeting each other for the first time while some were actually playing competitive cricket for the first time. From an inauspicious start in the heavy rain last October, there was dramatic improvement from virtually every player. The boys were competitive on a weekly basis, never gave up and played with a terrific spirit despite some long hot mornings in the sun. Overall we finished 4th on the ladder, playing

11 games, winning 5 (1 outright) while there were 6 losses, which was a fair reflection of the season. Riley Kennedy had a stand out season with the bat, 252 runs at an average of 36, including scores of 63 no and 48 no. Liam Chang was something special with the ball and our leading bowler, amassing 24 wickets at an average of 2.8, which included a 5 for 6 effort and a well-deserved hat-trick. Tom Wunsch always took up

the difficult challenge of opening the innings and was a tremendous team player. All 14 members of the squad made significant contributions. Team manager Melanie Bullock, was new to cricket but did an unbelievable job of keeping the team organised. To all the parents who scored, umpired, helped lay out the ground and generally provided magnificent support to the boys can I say a massive thank-you.

Game 1 - Pius Blue defeated by Forest To be fair this was a harrowing day. The team was only named that week, many of the boys didn’t know each other, the coach certainly didn’t know the strengths or weaknesses of the players and this clearly was going to be a massive learning experience for all. Just to top things off light to heavy rain fell for most of the morning but we played on. Batting first in the drizzle wasn’t easy and we were bowled out for a meagre 54. Forest reached the required runs with a couple of overs to spare, but everyone was better off for the initial match. Game 2 - 2 day – 50 over Pius Win Outright v Collaroy Killowatts Most of the boys were playing their first 2 day match. Collaroy won the toss and decided to bat and it didn’t take long for Pius to make in-roads. Adam Gangemi and Cian Hughes opened the bowling and did extremely well. Gangemi finishing with excellent figures of 3 for 8, Ashley Johnson strongly picking up 2 for 9. Matthew Bradley was always up to the challenge to open the batting making 16, Liam Chang had a great day out retiring on 42, while Nick Boxall 11 and Tom Wunsch 17 also retired undefeated. Pius Blue made 5 for 188 off their 50 overs which allowed Pius to send Collaroy back in. Blake Hoolahan 1 for 1, Tom Miles 2 for 6, Gangemi 2 for 5 leading Pius to their first and only outright win of the season. Game 3 - Pius Blue defeated by Seaforth Phoenix – Tania Park Of all things, fog delayed the start of the play at the picturesque Tania Park at Seaforth. Once it cleared, Pius Blue found themselves in trouble at 3 for 21 before Riley Kennedy 33 not out and Liam Chang 36 not out put on a classy partnership in helping amass a total of 133. Missing a couple of key bowlers, Collaroy chased down our total on day 2, Cian Hughes snaring 3 for 7 for his best figures of the season.

Game 4 – Pius Blue defeated the Harbord Hurricanes This was a lovely stress free day at junior!cricket for Pius Blue supporters (pictured above). In some early trouble at 3 for 32, Riley Kennedy and Cian Hughes steadied the ship. Cian eventually caught on 39, while Riley went on to post our first and only half century of the season in polished display, remaining undefeated on 63 not out. With a big total of 171 to defend, Pius Blue knocked over Collaroy for 114, Liam Chang grabbing a five wicket haul and a HAT-TRICK. Game 5 – Pius Blue defeated by Peninsula Pacers Batting first, Pius Blue made 132 (Riley Kennedy 38, Cian Hughes 32 no and Liam Chang 11 no were the mainstays of the innings. Unfortunately at our only match at our spiritual home, Oxford Falls, we clearly didn’t bowl or field well enough on day 2 and Peninsula were way too good.

Game 6 – Pius Blue celebrated a BYE to head into the Christmas Break. Tom Wunsch was often our rock at the top of the order and he again did an outstanding job v Harbord Tigers making 18 not out in a meagre total of only 61. Harbord easily chased down our target for the loss of only 3 wickets. We were sent back in, Wunsch, again top scored with 30 not out. We set Harbord a total of 86 to win off about 15 overs and to their credit Harbord chased them down. Another big learning experience for all the Pius players. Game 8- Pius Blue defeated Forest – David Thomas Oval Tom Wunsch continued his great run of form posting another great 30, while Liam Chang crafted a terrific 39 no in a total of 123. Liam backed up his great knock with a brilliant bowling performance taking 3 for none while Riley Kennedy took 2-1. We sent

Forest back in but our efforts to chase the outright was thwarted by stubborn resistance. Game 9 – Pius Blue defeated Collaroy – Nolan Aggressive bowling from Tom Miles, Cian Hughes, Liam Chang , Ashley Johnson, Blake Ferguson and George Bullock saw Collaroy bowled out for only 38. That allowed Callum Fitzgibbon and Sam Pavel to open the innings, with Bullock backing up at first drop. Bradley and Riley Kennedy guiding Pius Blue to an impressive win. Game 10 - Pius Blue defeated by Seaforth Phoenix – Tania Park Seaforth Phoenix are a very good team and we just let them get away from us. George Bullock, Sam Pavely and Blake Hoolahan bowling well late but the opposition posted a formidable total of 179. Riley Kennedy had a great day out, playing a full array of shots to post a rapid fire 48 not out before being forced to retire after his 15 overs. Callum Fitzgibbon remained not out 3. Seaforth were just too good for us. Game 11 - Pius Blue won v Harbord Hurricanes – Nolan 5 Matthew Bradley and Tom Wunsch again opened the innings and made solid starts. Mark Guerrera bravely went up the order in a great display of team spirit. George Bullock had a dash, while Riley Kennedy (23) and Liam Chang (22 no) were impressive. Chang again did the business with the ball (4 for 2) while Miles, Gangemi, Bullock and Hoolahan were solid. Game 12 Pius Blue defeated by Peninsula Pacers – Nolan 6 Inhospitable conditions for our final game, heavy rain made holding the ball difficult. Peninsula making 5 for 108, Mark Guerrera picking up a well deserved wicket while Sam Pavely bowled tightly. Tom Wunsch and Liam Chang finishing off great seasons with resilient innings of 17no and 18no respectively.
