Champagnat LiturgyToday we held our Champagnat Liturgy via a Zoom link to the rest of the school.

We would usually have this celebration as close as possible to 6 June, Marcellin Champagnat’s Feast Day, but as you would remember we were unable to due to gathering restrictions.

I want to thank the team led by Mrs. Robyn Rebbechi who organised this event and my appreciation also goes to Ms Karina Taylor and her work with event organisation. I am also grateful to Mr. Shane Lebbe and the Liturgical Choir for taking the time earlier this week to record the music used in the Liturgy. The recording and the presentation of the Liturgy was done by local business Nanoo Nanoo, operated by Dan Clancey and Eloisa Tripodi.

A key element of our celebration is the recognition of the recipients of the Champagnat Medals. The recipients are recognised for their Marist qualities of: family spirit; love of work; simplicity; presence; and service in the way of Mary. All who were nominated and the successful recipients of the medals give witness and example of our motto: Strong Minds and Compassionate Hearts. Accordingly, I congratulate:

Student NewsToday our Training Band and Junior Jazz Ensemble attended the Yarram Eisteddfod. This was the Training Band’s first performance and also the first performance for our Junior Jazz since 2019. Well done to Shane Lebbe for his organisation and leadership of this opportunity.

Well done to all involved in the Ski Camp that returned yesterday. By all accounts it was a very successful activity. Thanks to Mr Andrew Wald for his organisation.

Student Mid-Year AwardsDuring Home Room and Learner Adviser time on Friday 12th August students received their Mid-Year Awards for Academic Merit, Diligence and Excellence.

….and FINALLY! Today we were able to celebrate our Liturgy for the Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat. For students who are new to our college, this may not seem like a big deal, but for those of us who have been around a bit longer, we know that Marcellin’s Feast Day is an important date in the college calendar, for Marist schools all around the world.

In our liturgy today, which was live streamed from the Kildare Chapel, we focused on remembering who we are as a Marist community, and listening for the voice of God in all aspects of our lives.

I include an excerpt from our opening reflection, which was led beautifully by our Liturgy Leaders, Amelia Cassar and Angela Francolino.

It was wonderful to be able to ‘gather’ together to pray today, even in our separate places, to stop, to breathe and to focus on the heritage of St Marcellin, as well as how we can carry on his work and legacy in our lives today. Thank you to all those who participated and helped with the organisation of this liturgy. In particular, thanks to Mr Shane Lebbe and the Lavalla Liturgical Choir for their work in providing the beautiful music for our liturgy; music which was pre-recorded to enable the choir’s involvement in a covid-safe way. It really added to our celebration today.

The feast of St Marcellin Champagnat occurs each year on June 6th, the anniversary of St Marcellin’s death in 1840.

This year, although we are commemorating the occasion after the feast day, this is still an important celebration in

our College life.

The feast of Saint Marcellin Champagnat celebrates the connection we have at our school, to the global Marist family.

St Marcellin started schools in the country areas of France over 200 years ago to give an education to children who

would not normally have received that opportunity.

Today, there are Marist schools and other Marist ministries in over 80 countries. To be a Marist is to be a follower of

Jesus, and we live this way in the Catholic tradition.

The founder of the Marist Brothers, St Marcellin, was a man who knew that he was in the presence of God every

minute of the day. While he was a priest and therefore would have celebrated Mass every day, he was aware that

God was also to be found in all other aspects of his life.

The Marist schools theme for this year ‘Breathe’ calls us to listen for the spirit of God, the breath of God, as we

take stock of our own lives, and the world around us.

Let us start with paying attention to what’s in front of us. When we are distracted, it is difficult to concentrate on

what we are doing or who we are talking to. But when we are attentive to people and the events going on around

us, we start to notice things – and quite possibly, notice what’s happening for us as well. So, take a few moments of

silence now, to reflect on what has been happening for you so far today–

Term 2 has again provided our students and staff with the opportunity to show their resilience and commitment to learning and supporting one another. Onsite or remote – our focus remains on learning and supporting our students. We are all relieved and thankful to be back on site after another period of remote learning. The ability of our staff, students and families to shift between these ways of working has been a credit to all.

I would especially like to thank you for your support of students and the College to make these shifts as smooth as possible. The most recent remote learning period came at an interesting time in our assessment calendar, and the ability for staff and students to adapt quickly, allowing for minimal disruption to student learning and assessment, was highly commendable. Students in Years 7 to 10 have been able to complete Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) with only minor delays. Our senior students have returned to on-site classes smoothly. I am particularly proud of the work of the College staff through these challenging times as they have been able to remain focused on student learning and achievement while also supporting the social and emotional needs of students.

Pathways and subject selection

We are completing our subject selection and course counselling period for our Year 8 to 11 students. This is always a busy time for our students and families as they negotiate course selection details. Our Year 10 students are faced with some of the bigger questions regarding their pathway direction as they select a course for their final two years of school.

I am confident that the range of resources assembled by the College have been of great benefit for our students and families as they work through this process. Further, I would encourage all of our students to continue to make the most of the College’s opportunities to support them through this time. Unit 3 & 4 Parent, Teacher, Student Interviews (PTSI)

Parents/Guardians of students completing Unit 3 & 4 subjects should have received an email regarding PTSI interviews to be held on Thursday 26 August from 4 pm to 7 pm. This is an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers before the VCAA exams commence. They can provide advice on how to support them in preparing for the weeks ahead. We will also be offering a Zoom Q & A session on – VCE exam advice and VTAC information for parents on Thursday 26th August from 7.15 pm-8.00 pm.

An email will be sent out on Monday to register for the event.

MUSIC NEWS

On Friday the 20th of August our Training Band and Junior Jazz Ensemble ventured to Yarram to compete in the 60th Yarram Eisteddfod. Despite being met with stiff competition, both of our ensembles took away first place in their

respective sections. This was our Training Band’s first ever performance and the Junior Jazz Ensembles first performance since 2019 and we congratulate both groups for their outstanding efforts. Among the ranks of musicians at Yarram was year 9 Champagnat Medallist, Jackson Lea. Our excursion coincided with the rescheduled Champagnat Liturgy, so it was a real pleasure to present Jackson with this prestigious award amongst his peers who made him feel warmly appreciated for his service to our College community. The excursion culminated in pies from the Yarram Bakery and lunch at the Memorial Park.

Our Liturgical Choir students recently participated in a recording session with Nanoo Nanoo. Our choristers were outstanding while they engaged in this session, recording three pieces to support the Champagnat Liturgy held on Friday the 20th of August. We’re grateful for the support from Nanoo Nanoo and would like to particularly thank our two cantors, Lana Barnes and Jaslynne Salerno, for their contributions.

With the unfortunate disruptions that we have all experienced this Term, the College Musical has had to be rescheduled, and will no longer be taking place this week.

We are very fortunate that we’ve been able to continue with some of our rehearsals, and we have an amazing cast of students this year who have been so flexible in attending online Teams rehearsals when necessary.

We’re blessed to have such a close cast group, who have been flexible and resilient together, always looking for ways they can support one another and keep the show going.

We’re crossing our fingers that with the current Regional restrictions in place, our Musical can still go ahead at this stage, and we would love to see families and friends in the audience supporting all of the hard work these students have done.

Alcohol & Young People

The legal age of drinking in Australia is 18 for very important reasons. Most importantly it is to protect the young budding brain which continues to develop until the age of 25. The earlier drinking is initiated, the longer it will take for the brain to develop the skills necessary for memory retention, and decision making, as well as impacting attention span and influencing behaviours.

Early alcohol intake can also lead to drinking more and more often, and can lead to issues with dependence and addiction.

Parents play an important role in their teen’s perception of positive (and negative) drinking cultures. Current studies are showing that modelling the behaviour you expect from your teen is having a significant impact on their likelihood to either abstain or partake in alcohol consumption.

For this reason, it is important to talk about alcohol with your teen and provide clear guidelines and expectations. Excellent resources are available online including DRINKWISE (drinkwise.org.au), and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (adf.org.au). Both of these are Australian and have easy to navigate pages. Check them out with your teen and use them as a starting point for your conversation. Best of luck!
