In this, the Marian Year, the Blessed Virgin, who throughout the whole course of Her life, never departed from the precepts and examples of Her Divine Son, exhorts us in t he same words that She used at Cana, "Whatsoever He shall say to you, do ye." She repeats this same exhortation to us when it is evident that the root of all evils that exist in the world today, have originated in t he fact that many people have forsaken Him. It is the aim of Catholic education to prevent such unfortunate happenings.

Holy Father
POPE PIUS XII
Now Gloriously
Reigning
CIRCULAR Centenary of the Dogma
of the Immaculate Conception
MARIAN YEAR
My Dear Brothers and Affiliated Members,
Sylvester Joseph JUERGENS, Superior
General of the Society of Mary, Missionary Apostolic, to all the Religious and Affiliated Members of said Society
On this anniversary of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, I need not
exhort you to do all in your power to enter into the spirit and to help carry out
the program outlined in the Holy Father's Encyclical "Fulgens Corona." That pro
gram could be aptly entitled: "A Better World Through the Immaculate Conception."
Our heavenly Mother will be most pleased to see us reproduce her thoughts, words,
and actions; we must, therefore, loathe and Bee the least stain of sin, if we wish to
. imitate her Immaculate Conception. Our Blessed Mother spurs us all to accomplish
this . Is is the real purpose of the Marian Year.
In this Marian Year, Christian living can be brought to flourish again, and true
Christian principles can be applied to all social problems in order to bring true
peace to our times. But these principles must not remain theoretical; they must be
put into practice. We must pray that people of matnre age distinguish themselves
by Christian honesty and fortitude; that families remain ioyally united, give a sound
Christian education to their children, and support one another in peace and by
mutual aid .
May our Immaculate Queen and Mother, then, make every one
of you an apostle of the Marian Year and bless all your efforts
with extraordinary success. Affeqionately and devotedly yours in J.M.].

MOST REV. FR. SYLVESTER JOSEPH JUERGENS, S.M.
His Excellency
KARL J. ALTER Archbishop of Cincinnati
In this Marian Year, Archbishop Karl J. Alter is especially trying to instill into his flock a fervent love of the Blessed Virgin. His zealous efforts have in the past born rich fruit and his peerless guidance will continue to accurately chart and direct our course of striving · toward heavenly channels. On leaving Chaminade, a debt of gratitude is owed to His Excellency for the personal interest he has shown in our spiritual well-being. His past example has left in all students an enduring impression that will enable them to accept the responsibilities of Catholic gentlemen in a non-Catholic world.
The Right Reverend MSGR. CARL J. RYAN
For many years, Msgr. Ryan has wholeheartedly thrown himself into the tremendous work of supervising all parochial schools in the Arch-diocese of Cincinnati. In the recent letter of the Holy Father, His Holiness pointed out the necessity of the education of the people so that their faith may be strengthened and their devotion to . the Blessed Virgin increased.
Monsignor has worked industriously to fulfill this request. The students of the Marianist school-Chaminade, Day tonwish to extend their thanks for his untiring efforts in their behalf.
REV. EDWARD CONNAUGHTON
For the past four years, Father Connaughton has devoted his time to the supervision of Catholic education in the Dayton parochial schools. Without his guidance, Catholic education would not have reached its present high level.
In this, "The Marian Year," his work will take on new importance. We know Father will take this task in stride and
DEDICATION
BROTHER MATTHEW Principal Clnd Counselor
For many years it has been the hope of faculty, friends, and students for a new Chaminade. Finally, under the guidance of Brother Matthew, our beloved principal, the work was begun on Oct. 17, 1950. Although many were doubtful as to the outcome of his endeavor, the building slowly took shape and was dedicated on May 25 , 1952.
The senior class, the whole school, moreover, all those who have been connected with Chaminade owe Brother Matthew a debt of gratitude for what he has done for us, his students.
The time has come for Brother Matthew to go on another assignment, but the students he leaves behind will long remember him for his thoughtfulness and inspiring leadership.

RATION Nothing can be more pleasing to our facul
ty, lay and religious, than to read the words of His Holiness in proclaiming a "Marian Year, "-the first in the History of the Church. And who can be more qualified than our Brothers,. who have consecrated themselves totally in making Her better known, loved and served, for carrying out the wishes of our Holy Father? We students are indeed privile4]ed and thankful to be under their guidance, especially for this particular occasion.

BRO. CHARLES ECKHARDT, S.M. Dean of Boys
We have been helped in all our endeavors by the capable guidance of
• Brother Charles. His undying efforts to push forward the "goal of education" will always be appr:eciated by the present students and by those who have graduated. He has given his advice and corrected our errors. His smiling face and helping hand will always be remembered, not only by the class of '54, but also by every class passing through the halls of Chaminade.
We, the senior class, wish you good luck and happiness. May God bless you and protect you through all the years of your life.
REV. PAUL WAGNER, S.M. School Chaplain
The development of our spiritual life and faith is promoted by our Chaplain, Father Paul. He is able to direct us spiritually, since his own life has been consecrated to Mary. His own manner of living serves as an example which will point the way for those who follow and will add lustre to the crown of our Alma Mater.
May the Divine Teacher ~nd His Blessed Mother grant him the necessary grace to carryon this noble task so generously begun.

Our four years have come to an end. We seniors know that it has passed all too swiftly. We look back at our four years, and then glance into the future, filled with uncertainty. But, nevertheless, uncertain as it may be, we 'can rest assured of guidance from our Blessed Mother. Let us, therefore, never prove to .be untrue to our Blessed Mother, fC)r "A servant of Mary shall never perish."

EAGLE LEADERS ... The class of 1954 has selected its senior class officers on the basis of merit.
Peter Brenner was elected Treasurer because of his intelligence and devotion to school. Vice President, Anthony Gaccetta, was selected because of his enthusiasm and willingness to work. Leadership and character are the two m.ain qualities which make Paul Ahlquist an outstanding President. Jack Ditzel's spirit and ambition are reasons for his election as Secretary. All four have served us well; we thank them.

CLASSMEN
The foremost thought in our minds as Underclassmen is to attain the goal of being a graduate of Chaminade High School. Thus, we would be considered a Christian Gentleman, which is one of the highest privileges on earth. To a goal of this height and glory, many obstacles will obstruct our path, but if we weigh our problems in the true Chaminade spirit, we will readily dis-pose of them. .
As Underclassmen, therefore, we tak-~ on with pleasure, the responsibility of conforming with rules and traditions of our school which are to carry honor and Christianity to the highest degree to our fellow Cham~ inade students and to the rest of the world.

A rather important phase in the Catholic student's school life is the extracurricular activities. This year, the Marian Year. has offered the student a special incentive to dedicate all his activities to Jesus through Mary. This act of Filial Piety now. will undoubtedly affect the students in their later life so that they will offer all their activities for the greater 'honor and glory of God. as Jesus did for thirty years while living with His Mother.
8 1
SODALITY Our Sodality at Chaminade this year has taken on a new life with the
combined 'efforts of our new moderator, Father Wagner, and his assistants,
It has switched from a parish basis to groups formed by individual classes so as to create a more inspirational and elevated love for Our Mother during this Marian Year,
This increased love for Mary is shown by a great number of sodalists who this year have ' received their "Gold Pins," officially enrolling them in the sodality,
The rosary, daily Mass, and Holy Communion are the activities emphasized by the members, Added to these accomplishments this past year were: the Opening of the Marian Year Program, Sodality Convention, and the two solemn consecration ceremonies,

Being the Marian Year, all our thoughts, words, and actions should be directed toward Mary. In this way, we honor Our Heavenly Mother and make her better known, loved and served in the world of today.
This spirit prevails to a great extent throughout the school due to the Catholic minded students under the continual guidance of the Marianist Brothers and Priests.
In this picture we have tried to capture that spirit. The servers being a symbol of the students, always looking up to our Mother Mary.

IMMACULATE
First among Mary's titles is that of the Immaculate Conception. This privilege was officially proclaimed a dogma of faith by Pope Pius IX exactly one hundred years ago. In it, God saw fit that the woman who was to bear Christ in her womb should be conceived without original sin. It is only natural to expect that the Son of God have a human mother perfectly free from all sin, even from the first instant of life. This special privilege and honor, which of all women, of all the creatures of God, Mary alone enjoyed, is summed up in the beautiful words which the Blessed Mother herself in an apparition granted to little Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858: "I am the Immaculate Conception."
"0 Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

ASSOCIATE EDITORS-C. Ott, Organizations; B. Mehall, Features; and P. Brenner, Sports.
This year, the yearbook staff has tried to capture the spirit of the Marian year, using our talents to express this theme on these pages. Looking back on the hard work, we only hope we have accomplished this purpose.
The editorial staff, under the direction of Brother John Blank, combined their efforts toward creation. The business staff, under the supervision of Brother Charles Bergedick, supplied the financial means without which this book would not be possible.
The '54 Eagle staff has enjoyed putting this annual together, a memento of our last year at Chaminade and we wish you much success in the future .

A trend in higher education is being brought about here at Chaminade through the fine co-operation between parents and teachers . Discussion among this group has resulted in a more harmonious atmosphere for the student with an increased knowledge in both home and school.
Activities of this organization are split with the fathers sponsoring fishfries and a Father and Son banquet while the mothers have engaged in a pillow case bingo, a covered dish party, be sides supplying volunteers for cafeteria work.
Entertainment for both groups was provided by the Catholic University Players who presented a Shakespearean Play.
Through this spirited co-operation between our parents and teachers, the status of the student with the faculty has undoubtedly been bettered.

To be accepted into this society, a student must achieve either a minor or major letter, maintain a scholastic average of 80 percent or better, a character rating of 90 percent or above, and has distinguished the school and students by their sportsmanship and citizenship.
We here at Chaminade are proud of these athletes and they are truly worthy of our imitation and admiration.

One of the most active organizations in the school has been the 1954 Chaminade Band. Under the direction of Brother Joseph Trageser, with assistant Brother Frank Modica, the band has frequently represented the school and has given a fine account of itself, which was only obtained by the hard work put into their accomplishments.
Engaged in many activities; notable, the football rallies, half-time shows, Holy Name Day Parade, the Variety Show, the Christmas Party, the Christmas Concert, the St. Elizabeth Hospital Dedication, and the annual Spring Concert; we salute this illustrious group.

The Radio Club's purpose this year, under the supervision of Brother Robert Geary, has been to develop its members into full-fledged radio "hams." At their meetings, they are taught code, taught how to intercept the reguired words per minute, instructed on how to acguire a license, how to become a novice and then a "ham." Here is the development of the future radio operator.
Although a small group in its first organized year, the Radio Club is steadily advancing to the attention of the students here at Chaminade.

The Dramatics Club, which made its debut in the regular activities and organizations of Chaminade last year in the newly acquired auditorium, completed another successful year of which all its members can be proud.
Under the direction of Brother John O'Connor, the Club staged their humorous production, "Papa Behaves," various other skits for the students, and "Dress Reversal" for the Mother and Fathers' Club. The audience's applause surely indicated a hope for continued success in the future.

Mary's example to us of clean living and fair play, is the backbone of the sports' program here at Chaminade. Be it football, basketball, or any sport in which the Chaminade students participate, they are taught by Mary's example and coaches' words, to play hard, but clean and fair. The ideals that the students receive from their engaging in sports, will follow them into later life. These principles will enable the boys to lead solid, clean lives, and make them fair dealers in any field of endeavor.

Resume of Year The 1953 football season found Chaminade
facing one of the toughest schedules in the history of the school. There was doubt in the minds of many people as to whether the team could compare with some of the teams that represented the s.chool under Fuzzy Faust. After the first victory over Flaget, there was no doubt at all about the power of the Eagles. In his first season at Chaminade, Mr. Robert Jauron fielded, perhaps, the most powerful team ever to play under the Green and White.

CHAMINADE 53 - 6 LOUISVILLE FLAGET
The Eagles opened the 1953 football campaign in fine style by romping over Louisville Flaget 53-6. Chaminade, with Mr. Jauron beginning his first season as head coach, looked good in . every phase of the game. Flaget threw a scare into the Green and White by scoring in the first minutes of the game, but Chaminade came back quickly and Flaget did not score again.
CHAMINADE 34 - 6 STIVERS
The Orange and Black could not hold the Green and White and the Eagles won number two of the season. Fine downfield blocking and stellar defensive play was the key to Chaminade's win. Zimmerman's faking and DeVanney's hard running were the outstanding features of the game.
VINCENT DeVANNEY Halfback

CHAMINADE 48 - 7 ELDER, Cincinnati
All fifty-two of Chaminade's gridders got into the action as the Eagles crushed the Panthers. Dave Huber, Jerry Raiff, Jim Corbett and Bob Morrella were outstanding as Chaminade overcame an .early 7-0 Elder lead. The defensive unit played well and the game turned into a rout in the second half.
CHAMINADE 35 -13 HAMILTON
With five backs chalking up an average of 4.5 yards or better against the highly rated Big Blue, the Eagles soundly thumped their downstate rivals. King-size portions of blocking paved the way for the Chaminade gridders fourth win. Zimmerman's split-T wizardry was good for two touchdowns; DeVanney scored twice and Dave Huber once.

Don Allgyer and Joe Slater were the key men on the forward wall, while Tom Agnew and Jerry O'Donnell were outstanding on the defensive line.
CHAMINADE 47 - 0 KISER
The Eagles were never pressed as they ground out a smashing victory over the Panthers. The hard charging Ludlow Streeters' line, led by Stein and Lemons, tore terrific holes in the Kiser defense, and the backs were as swift-running as ever. With a victory in their next game the Eagles would be assured of the city championship.

CHAMINADE 40 - 0 ROOSEVELT
A strong defensive unit set the stage for Chaminade winning their sixth straight city championship. The "headsup" ball playing of Caporal, Cable and Pytel along with the powerful running of De Vanney and Morella stopped the Teddies cold. Chaminade took to the air the second half with Zimmerman completing five of five, including two for touchdowns to Jim Corbett.
CHAMINADE 20 - 28 BENEDICTINE
A rugged eleven upset. Chaminade before 8000 fans as Butch Zimmerman starred in a losing cause. Playing against the biggest line they faced all season, the Eagles outgained Bengals 319 yards to 248 yards, but came out on the short end of the score. Zim scored twice and Huber once in the contest.

DeVanney scored three times, Huber twice and Morrella and Stoecklein once to spark the Eagles to the win.
CHAMINADE 33 - 0 PURCELL
Chaminade's crushing game upset the Queen City team before 10,000 fans. Bob Morella was the workhorse for the Eagles scoring three times as they handed the Cavaliers their worst defeat in six seasons, and holding them scoreless for the first time since 1942. As was true most of the season, a hard-charging, sharp-blocking forward wall was the key to the Eagles' success.

In their initial appearance of th~ season, the Eagles looked shaky and dropped the decision to a St. X team which had three games under its belt. The Chaminade team needed practice, got it, and were a much better ball club over the remainder of the s.eason .
48 PURCELL 60 Despite Butch Zimmerman leading the way with 22 points, the Eagles lost their last home game to the hard running Cavaliers. The Eagles were out-shot but not out-fought.
54 PATTERSON 28 Leading all the way, the Eagles were never hard pressed in winning over the Beavers. The rebounding of Jim Corbett and Bob Goecke was a contributing factor to the win.
57 KISER 42 Following a trouncing by the city champs, the Eagles again ' got into the win column by knocking off the Panthers. Fine play was turned in by Zimmerman and Corbett.

33 ROOSEVELT 45 The tall, talented Teddies proved to be too much for the Eagles. Chaminade got only one shot at a time as Roosevelt's height controlled both backboards. Jim Reboulet starred for the Eagles .

Here reviewed in the following pages is an important phase of the high school student's life at Chan:tinade. The social phase of the life of a student may not be the most important but it cannot be disregarded as totally insignificant. It cannot be considered as such because it gives the student a chance to develop his character through social lines. It is not only Chiminade's wish to develop the student spiritually, intellectually, and physically, but also to help him to achieve a Catholic attitude toward . social functions and to help him take. his place in the social aspect of the world. In this section we complete the well-rounded development of the Catholic student.

A gayly colored, musical production, with a South American theme, it was filled with wonderful acts of all sorts and it held the attention of the audience throughout. A grateful thanks should be extended to all the Brothers, laymen, alld students associated with the show who all demonstrated a willing co-operation to make "Yankee Fiesta" a success.

SOCIAL SCENE ...
Phil knows how to pick . em !
Chaminade students enjoy Student Council Dance.
Willie and Dave give us that sly smile.
Cayoda Council plans future dances.
Among the social functions presented to the Catholic student here at Chaminade are the numerous dances held for their participation. Here is a chance for the student to become acquainted with the type of life he will encounter in the future, the company between Catholic men and Catholic women. Today, in a world filled with pagan ideals, the Catholic student also has the opportunity to acquire wholesome attitudes toward proper companionship. In conclusion, we can see that a well-rounded Catholic education has now been presented to the student.
Get the look

TENNIS Another squad in Chaminade's long list of athletic teams is the tennis
team, which finished competition in the city league this season with fair success. The netsters, under the tutelage of coach Ed Regan, ended the season with a 5·3 mark. This year's team displayed a great amount of sportsmanship, and , though their record doesn 't show it, were in the struggle all the way.

BASEBALL After a ten year absence from the Chaminade
sports scene, baseball made its comeback with a rousing 11 to 1 vidory over Stivers, fol· lowed by a successful season and a trip to Cincinnati for the district play·offs.
Under the able coaching of Mr. Tom Fre· ricks, the team showed balance, and joined with sportsmanship, it proved to be the down· fall of a great majority of its opponents.

While the boys art: away, Ma and Pa enjoy themse lves.
A delightful comedy, with excellent acting, best describes this year's play. Performed in our own auditorium, of course, the production, in three hilarious arts and, under the direction of Brother John O 'Conner, afforded an enjoyable evening. In the play, a wealthy bachelor, tries to out-wit his suspecting sons by having ·an old friend pose as his new bride. The sons fight back, the lady of the house fights back, and in the end, Papa loses his artificial wife, and his picture makes the front page of the town's newspaper. A really funny play"Papa, Behave."
