CHAIR MESSAGE
Mission Statement “To facilitate, advocate and cultivate opportunities for the Lisle Area Business
Community”
Peter James, Chair
It’s the last week of March as I write this and I have to
wonder, is it really Spring? Mother Nature doesn’t seem to
think so. Welcome to Chicagoland! Nevertheless, I hope you
all have enjoyed the beginning of the season. March provided
us with a flurry (no pun) of events including the Suburban
Multi-Chamber Luncheon & Expo, two Ribbon Cuttings
(Applied Network Concepts, Inc. and Blend Hair & Skincare),
LINCT meetings, and the First Annual Women’s Conference held on the
beautiful campus of the College of DuPage.
And with Spring Break upon us, thinking about warmer weather is a
no-brainer. As you shift your business focus to the summer, be sure to
take part in and support the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce activities
and events in April, which will definitely help to promote you and your
business even further. Here are some key events for the month of April:
General Membership Luncheon (4/19): “Sexual Harassment In The
Workplace: What Is It and How To Handle It”. Brian M. Dougherty of
Goldstine, Skrodzki, Russian, Nemec & Hoff, Ltd. will be our guest speaker.
Leadership in Networking Committee Team (LINCT) - LINCT has
been crushing it on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. If you are
not attending this opportunity to solely talk about business, then you might
be hurting your own.
2018 Scholarship Deadline (4/6) - If you have a rising senior, he or she
will need money for college. Why not put in an application? Please check
the Chamber website for the Scholarship Application requirements. The
applications are due in the Chamber office no later than April 6, 2018 by
4:00 p.m.
And lastly, continue to shift your own mindset to that of adaptability and
flexibility in this often tumultuous and volatile business environment in
which we operate. It will keep you sane. And it will allow your business to
flourish. See you soon!

CHAMBER NEWS
I attended the Illinois Chamber’s 1st Annual Woman’s
Conference at the College of DuPage. I looked around the
room of 160+ professional women from all industries:
media, marketing and communications, engineers, bankers,
manufacturing, emergency management, chamber leaders,
and nonprofits. Each speaker had a story to tell and an
opinion to share. Business is so different now for all
generations and it doesn’t matter female or male, all are
affected. The technology aspect we have now has evolved to more
texting, e-mailing, and use of social media. Is networking in person not as
effective? I believe that all aspects are needed, but meeting in person helps
businesses give that personal touch and it is an extra value to your
Chamber Membership. You can find leadership, direction, motivation,
vision, inspiration, and support at a Chamber event. Think about attending
one of the luncheons that we have taking place in the month of April. You might find a business connection that you might not have otherwise
connected with. You can register on our website or contact the Chamber.
Tom Ricketts, Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, spoke to the
Business attendees at the Suburban Multi-Chamber Luncheon and Business
Expo at the beginning of March. After he received a standing ovation, you
could hear a pin drop in the room of over 500 attendees. He said, “The
dream continues.” Members in attendance were listening closely to his
message. He related to the business people in the audience and he
mentioned commerce many times. Ricketts said when he took over the
Chicago Cubs he had 3 goals; win the World Series, improve Wrigley Field
and be good neighbors in the Wrigleyville community. The team also
volunteers thousands of hours annually to various community causes. He
said the team raised more than $10 million for philanthropic causes in
2017. He reiterated how important it is to set goals for yourself and your
company. After the luncheon, he even took time for an impromptu meet
and greet for pictures with attendees.
Don’t forget to have your high school senior apply for the Chamber
scholarships. The deadline for the scholarship application is Friday, April
6, 2018. To be eligible you must live in Lisle, attend a High School in
District 202, 203 or 99, or be a child of a parent that works for a Lisle
Area Chamber of Commerce member. Our Scholarship Committee will
meet shortly after that to select the students that will receive the scholar-
ships. For more details, please visit our website, www.lislechamber.com

AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT - Peter James
This month’s featured Ambassador is Peter James of the College of DuPage. Peter has been a Lisle Area Chamber member for about three years and has been on the Ambassador Committee for just as long. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he is on the Scholarship Committee, Lisle Uncorked Committee and takes part in the Leadership In Networking Committee Team (LINCT). At the College of DuPage, Peter is an Assistant Professor of Business, Management, and Marketing. In addition to lecturing, he is also the Entrepreneurship Faculty Lead, the Entrepreneurship Club Faculty Advisor, and the Faculty Lead for the Emerging Entrepreneurs as well as taking part in a number of other committees. He has been teaching for over 10 years. Prior to his current position, Peter spent eight years as a U.S. Army Officer, ten years in Sales & Marketing at a major pharmaceutical firm, various entrepreneurial ventures including a Business and Leadership Coach for his own firm HCG Consulting Solutions. Peter lives in Downers Grove and is married with three daughters. He loves to travel, read and exercise but not necessarily in that order. Being a part of the Ambassadors and other Committees within the Chamber has allowed him to get a better grasp of the value of being a Chamber member. It has also helped him foster stronger relationships with fellow members, which in turn, benefits business in numerous ways. One of his favorite quotes is “Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark.” Jay Danzie.
