By Bruce Morse, WSBDC Region II direc-
tor
“Besides the customary liability and com-
mercial coverage on company assets, are
there other types of insurance I should con-
sider?” Larry, Riverton
I recently had some surgery on my hand,
which has made it painfully clear the diffi-
culty some small businesses would have
operating in the event the owner or key
employee was injured.
Years ago, I worked with an owner-
operator trucking company. The owner was
tarping a large load, and a gust of wind
caught the tarp and threw him off the
trailer, severely damaging his arm. Conse-
quently, he was unable to drive for a period
of time, had to hire a replacement driver
who cost him most of his profits, and this
driver did not take care of the truck like an
owner would.
This unfortunate event nearly cost him his
business. While this was most likely a per-
sonal injury coverage situation, having ad-
ditional coverage would have helped.
I recall another instance when a motel
burned down late one evening. The owner
had the property insured, of course, and
was able to rebuild the structure, but this
took considerable time to accomplish. In
the meantime, he had no revenue coming
in to live on.
These two incidents illustrate that, while
none of us likes to pay for insurance cover-
age, it serves a valuable purpose in protect-
ing a business and lifestyle. Depending on
the type of business, different coverage
options might make sense for the business
owner.
Business interruption, key man or buy/sell,
professional liability, commercial auto, and
something that has been in the news lately,
data breach or cybersecurity, are all possi-
ble needs in addition to basic commercial
property coverage.
I encourage business owners to contact
insurance agents and visit about appropri-
ate coverages for their businesses.
A local SBDC adviser, while not an insur-
ance professional, can help with possible
types of coverage needed and can suggest
questions to ask an agent.
ALL ABOUT TR LODGING ENTERPRISES
TR Lodging Enterprises helps railroads improve safety by providing a
superior rest environment for their engineers and conductors that in-
cludes extra-quiet rooms with light-proof drapes. We also help the rail-
road achieve on-time train performance by giving their employees
rooms without waiting. Our team members analyze available data to
determine the flow of incoming railroad guests, focus attention on
cleaning rooms quickly, and sell rooms that are not guaranteed or
needed by the railroad to our commercial and public guests. At Penny’s
Diner, we provide our guests with high quality, great-tasting, cooked-to
-order meals 24 hours a day in a fun, friendly, ‘50s atmosphere.
Hotel Guest Experience
We aim to exceed guest expectations for cleanliness, friendliness, qual-
ity and speed of service, as we provide a superior rest environment that
is attractive, well-maintained and secure at a fair price.
Diner Guest Experience
We aim to be the first choice for cook-to-order, 24-hour dining in our
town by exceeding guest expectations for food quality, friendliness,
cleanliness and service in a fun, ‘50s atmosphere.
Supporter Experience
Each supporter is empowered to provide excellent quality guest service
and to solve guest problems. We will do this with teamwork, training,
coaching, fairness and respect for each other.
Profit Experience
We meet profit expectations by accommodating every possible railroad
guest and selling all of the remaining available rooms to commercial
guests. We take action to build sales and control costs without sacrific-
ing quality.TR Lodging Enterprises Inc., corporately located in Wichita,
Kansas, began as Lodging Enterprises, Inc. in 1986. Today we own
and manage 45 hotels in 22 states. We manage lodging facilities for the
Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX and Canadian Pa-
cific Railroads, which includes our own independent Oak Tree Inns and
ever-popular Penny’s Diners. Most of our hotels house contract guests
as well as the commercial traveler. Our largest customer is UP, fol-
lowed closely by BNSF. Under the able leadership of our president,
Bill Burgess, whom has retired this past February, the company has
grown from a single property, the Days Inn of Muskogee, Oklahoma; to
the major company we are today. We are one of the largest manage-
ment companies in the United States. Our dedication to quality, value,
and employee empowerment has allowed us to be financially stable and
well respected in the industry.
The company employs approximately 20 people in the Corporate Of-
fice—and more than 900 people nationwide. Our supporters are re-
spected and given the opportunity to grow to their fullest potential, and
we’re proud to be able to offer an excellent training program and many
fine incentive plans.
The ONE Promise
“To make our Guests feel welcome, to provide the highest quality ex-
perience, and to respond to our Clients and Guests every need in a pro-
fessional and authentic manner.”
Talent Management Goal
“To make our team members feel welcome and valued, to provide the
highest quality workplace experience, and to respond to team members
needs in a professional and authentic manner.”
