Middletown Area Chamber of CommerceCelebrates MOT In StyleThe Middletown Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated their organization’s 43rd Anniversary in grand style! Members of the MOT community, business owners, Rotarians, residents and guests joined the MACC for their 43rd Anniversary Gala Dinner on at the Townsend Fire Hall.The evening kicked off with a welcome & motivational presentation by MACC’s first woman President, Sital Soni. The annual dinner not only celebrated the Middletown Area Chamber’s anniversary, but also honored local businesses and citizens who continue to make Southern New Castle County a great place to live and work with the Business and Citizen of the Year Awards. The evening also recognized an outstanding board member of the year with the Will Kirkwood President’s Award, the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year, Business of the Year and offered several special recognition awards.The MACC award winners include: MACC President’s Award – Marie Holliday of Cover & Rossiter, Business of the Year – Bailey’s Lawn & Landscape, Ambassador of the Year – Mary Jamieson of Mary Kay, Citizen of the Year Award – Bill O’ Neal

President of MOT Senior Center, and Volunteer of the Year Award – Bob Ryan of Odessa. The MACC also recognized outgoing board members, Ron Vascik of Raymond Book & Associates, Tracy Skrobot -Middletown Main Street Coordinator & Bill O’Neal - MOT Senior Center President for their dedicated service to the chamber. Guests enjoyed a fabulous dinner by the ladies auxiliary and the musical styling’s of the 3 Day Weekend for the remainder of the evening with dancing and networking.

Dear Community Member,

Incorporated in 1861, Middletown was known as the “Diamond Town of the Diamond State.” Owing to the decision of the first town council that the town should be “one mile square commencing at the corner of the crossroads and extending one-half mile in each direction…” roughly forming a diamond shape. From the early times of Middletown functioning as a rest stop for early wagon trains reaching thriving seaports on the Bohemia and Delaware Rivers, to a booming railway depot, and a blossoming suburban community, our area, now over 150 years later, is an emergent commercial center for mid-state Delaware continuing to draw many wonderful businesses and people.

For 43 years, the Middletown Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) has grown to support not just the Middletown, Odessa, Townsend (MOT) area but devoted itself to serving Southern New Castle County. This is an exciting time in the evolution of our growing organization. At over 400 members, MACC serves as the focal point for economic and community development, supports our area businesses and helps our community prosper through advocacy, connectivity, education, relationship marketing, and economic development.

A direct benefit of membership in your community Chamber of Commerce is having the board of directors, ambassadors, committees, and staff working with and for you to make this region a better place in which to do business and to live. The Chamber encourages all area businesses be they MACC members or not to be involved in our events and programs and to provide input on the direction and focus of our activities.

Every 34 seconds someone in America has a heart attack. The American Heart Association has identified seven different measures that play a significant role in a person’s risk of developing heart disease. Many heart related conditions can be prevented by making changes in each of the 7 measures listed below.

Life’s Simple 71. Manage Blood Pressure High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When your blood pressure stays within healthy ranges, you reduce the strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys which keeps you healthier longer.

2. Control Cholesterol High cholesterol contributes to plaque, which can clog arteries and lead to heart disease and stroke. When you control your cholesterol, you are giving your arteries their best chance to remain clear of blockages.

3. Reduce Blood Sugar Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) that our bodies use for energy. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.

4. Get Active Living an active life is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself and those you love. Simply put, daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life.

5. Eat Better A healthy diet is one of your best weapons for fighting cardiovascular disease. When you eat a heart-healthy diet, you improve your chances for feeling good and staying healthy for life!

6. Lose Weight When you shed extra fat and unnecessary pounds, you reduce the burden on your heart, lungs, blood vessels and skeleton. You give yourself the gift of active living, you lower your blood pressure and you help yourself feel better, too.

7. Stop Smoking Cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health.

Whether you’re looking for your first, second, or even third or fourth home in the First State, it’s no Small Wonder that some places are just plain better to live than others—especially when it comes to safety. The Movoto Real Estate Blog took closer look at the 10 safest places in Delaware, the shining gems within the Diamond State, the places with the lowest number of crimes per capita.

#1 Middletown is certainly the Most Improved on this year’s list. I mean, last year it didn’t even make the top 10 (it came in at No. 11), and now this year, it ranked better than the other 32 places we looked at. The reason it came in so high this year was mostly for its impressively low number of total crimes. Middletown Main Street Celebrates Small BusinessThe Small Business Administration held a ceremony at the Everett Theater to celebrate Main Street and small businesses in the MOT area. Downtown is a great place to shop, eat and enjoy small town charm in Middletown. A small business convoy was also held to kick off Small Business Saturday!

Nickle Electric Celebrates Construction ExcellenceNickle Electrical was awarded three Excellence in Construction awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors Delaware chapter. One of the projects given an award at the Excellence level was Hologic DET. The facility, located in Newark, manufactures medical imaging systems for women’s health examinations such as mammograms. The nearly 10,000 square foot addition doubled product and output at the existing facility with cutting-edge tech-nology. The second Excellence award was given to the new, state-of-the-art Delaware City DMV facility. Nickle successfully designed and built the electrical systems for this 48,000 square foot project serving New Castle and Kent County Delaware. The third award was given at the Merit level to Woodbridge High School. This project was almost half a century in the making. The new 160,000 square foot facility opened its doors to more than 600 students in September with modern, state-of-the-art features to educate today’s youth.“ Congratulations to all the employees who worked on these projects,” said Nickle President/CEO Steve Dignan. “It’s a reflection of all the hard work everyone puts out on every project both big and small.” Nickle now holds a total of 31 ABC Excellence in Construction Awards.

IN MEMORIAM

As a driving force for the MOT area, Robin served on the MACC Board of Directors for five years and was elected as the first woman vice president. She was an advocate for business and a dedicated councilwoman for the Town of Middletown. Her ability as a natural born saleswoman was evident at any function that entailed 50/50 tickets. Her love of the community can be seen in the MACC Community Guide and Business Directory which is one of the committees she chaired during her tenure. For her ongoing support of the MACC, her dedication to the MOT community and her love for sales, she was awarded with the Will Kirkwood President’s award, which recognizes an outstanding board member. Her laugh was contagious and she will be greatly missed.

Sue was an entrepreneur at heart. She loved creating things and had a knack for finding new ways to bring people together. During her tenure on the MACC Board of Directors, the Chamber flourished and grew. She was a mobilizing factor in the success of the Spring Expo and was the visionary behind Cosmic Network Bowling, a popular event that brings both the business community and their families together. She was an advocate for business, the MOT Charter School and community involvement. Her innovative marketing creative earned her both statewide and national awards through the Delaware Press Association. Her legacy will be remembered annually at the Sue Symes Golf Invitational. The Chamber will continue to honor her memory as a participant for years to come.
