CHALK PAINT With Finishing Wax or Homemade Glaze 1. Wash furniture with warm water & Dawn dish soap to remove dirt & grease. Rinse with clean rag. Let Dry 2. Make Chalk Paint - Mix 2 Tbs Calcium Carbonate with 1 Tbs water. Add 1 C of latex paint in desired color Hint - Home Depot sells 8 oz (1 cup) samples of color paint for about $3 3. Apply 2 coats paint, in opposite directions, 2nd coat add water if too thick. Should dry quickly between coats. 4. For smoother finish, sand lightly with 400 sandpaper. Use rough sanding sponge to distress edges. Dust. Stain?. Hint - Wrap sandpaper around a sanding sponge. May want to sand outside & blow dust with leaf blower APPLY WATER-BASED POLYCRYLIC (matte or satin finish) INSTEAD of Wax, or BEFORE the Wax Advantage - Long Lasting protection important for high-use furntiture. Can be painted over if paint gets chipped. Might look cloudy on dark colors of paint. Still want the wax eect, especially in the grooves? Can add it last. WAX FINISH looks nice on antiques & raw wood. Or skip this step & consider using glaze below. Wax is not good for tabletops as hot cups will melt the wax. Can use clear wax or color it with a dab of oil- based artist paint. Or, heat gently, then add oil-based stain. TO APPLY, use a rag, a round (or old) brush to get it into grooves. Apply in circles, thin layer, then rub o& Repeat. For dark wax, wipe 2nd time with clear wax. Once wax has dried, buto a shine with clean cloth. Optional to sand cured wax with 600 grit sandpaper for super-smooth finish & wipe owith rag as you go. HOMEMADE GLAZE for antique finish or faux wood appearance with wood grain tool. 1. On chalk paint, must first apply a coat of water-based polycrylic, matte or satin 2. Mix brown paint (laytex or acrylic) with Floetrol paint additive (2-3 parts Floetrol to 1 part Paint) 3. Brush on. Wipe partially oquickly, in direction of grain. Can use wood graining tool, cloth or brush. 4. Can repeat with darker glaze or add more to cracks. Seal with more layers of water-based polycrylic WOOD GRAIN TOOL Need to add more distressing? Sand more edges? Can stain sanded spots & wipe oquickly. So-so results?
