THE
The Three Trees
As we journey into Holy Week, I’d like to share with you a folklore story that
I’ve come to love…the story is simply known as, The Three Trees.
Once upon a time, three little trees stood in a forest high on a mountain,
dreaming of what they would be when they were grown. The first little tree
looked up at the stars twinkling like diamonds in the night sky. “I want to hold
treasure,” it said. “I want to be filled with gold and decorated with jewels. I
will be the most beautiful treasure chest in the world!”
The second little tree looked down the mountainside at the ocean far below. “I
want to be a strong sailing ship,” it said. “I want to travel mighty waters and
carry powerful kings. I will be the strongest ship in the world!”
The third little tree said, “I don’t want to leave this mountaintop at all. I want
to grow so tall that when people stop to look at me their eyes will raise up to
heaven, and they will think of God. I will be the tallest tree in the world!”
Years passed, and the trees grew. And then one day, three woodcutters climbed
the mountain. One woodcutter looked at the first tree and said, “This tree is
beautiful! It is perfect for me.” With a dozen swoops of his axe, the first tree
fell. “Now I shall be made into a beautiful treasure chest,” thought the first
tree. “I shall hold marvelous treasures!”
Another woodcutter looked at the second tree and said, “This tree is strong! It
is perfect for me.” With a dozen swoops of his axe, the second tree fell. “Now I
shall sail mighty waters,” thought the second tree. “I shall be made into a
strong ship fit for powerful kings!”
The third tree felt its heart sink as the last woodcutter approached. It stood
straight and tall and pointed bravely towards heaven. But the last woodcutter
never even looked up. “Any kind of tree will do for me,” he muttered. With a
dozen swoops of his axe, the third tree fell.
(continued on page 2)
The second tree rejoiced when the woodcutter took it to a shipyard. But the
shipbuilder was not thinking about mighty sailing ships. Instead, he hammered
and sawed the tree into a simple fishing boat. The once-strong tree was too The 2019

first tree rejoiced when the woodcutter took it to a carpenter’s shop. But the carpenter was not thinking about
treasure chests. Instead, he cut and carved the tree into a simple feedbox. The once-beautiful tree was not filled
with gold or decorated with jewels. It was covered with dust, and filled with hay for hungry farm animals.
weak to sail the ocean. It was taken to a little lake, where every day it carried loads of dead, smelly fish.
The third tree was confused when the woodcutter took it to a lumberyard, where it was cut into strong beams and
then left alone. “What happened?” the once-tall tree wondered. “All I ever wanted to do was stay on the moun-
taintop, grow tall, and make people think of God.”
Years passed, and the three trees nearly forgot their dreams. But then one still and silent night, golden starlight
poured over the first tree, as a young woman placed a newborn baby into the feedbox. “I wish I could make a
cradle for him,” her husband whispered. The mother squeezed his hand and smiled as the starlight shone on the
clean and shining wood. “This manger is beautiful,” she said. And suddenly the first tree knew it was holding the
greatest treasure in the world.
And then one humid and cloudy day, a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the small fishing boat. The
traveler fell asleep as the second tree sailed quietly out into the lake. But a thundering storm arose, and the
second tree shuddered, knowing that it did not have the strength to carry so many passengers safely through the
fierce wind and rain.
The tired traveler awoke. He stood up, stretched out his hand, and said with a strong voice, “Peace, be still.”
The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun. And suddenly the second tree knew it was carrying the King of
heaven and earth.
And then one terrible Friday morning, the third tree was startled as its beams were yanked from the old lumber-
yard. It flinched as it was carried through an angry, jeering, spitting crowd. It shuddered when soldiers nailed a
man’s hands and feet to her. It groaned as the man cried out in agony and died. It felt ugly and harsh and cruel.
But at dawn the next Sunday, on the first Easter morning, the earth trembled with joy beneath the third tree, and
it knew that God’s love had changed everything.
It had made the first little tree a beautiful treasure chest. It had made the second little tree a strong sailing ship.
And every time people looked upon the third little tree, they would think of God. That was even better than being
the tallest tree in the world.
My dearest friends in Christ, as we journey into Holy Week, may we always hold in our hearts that God through
Christ Jesus has blessed us with lives that have greater meaning than we could ever imagine!
God’s blessings to each and every one of you,
Pastor Laura
Botanists say that trees need the powerful March winds to flex their trunks and main branches, so that the sap is drawn up to nourish the budding leaves. Perhaps we need the gales of life in the same way, though we dislike enduring them. A blustery period in our fortunes is often the prelude to a new spring of life and health, success and happiness, when we keep steadfast in faith and look to the good in spite of appearances. —Jane Truax

With Sighs Too Deep For Words Thank-Yous
HCLC's worship team would like to recognize and thank all of the musicians whose talents
made our worship "With Sighs too Deep for Words” both beautiful and powerful.
Violinists: Ann Lamar- Heide, William Andersen, Rachel Christensen, Sophie Young,
Lainie Jaeck. Cellists: Betty Peterson and Erik Andersen. Pianist - Gregory Berg, soloist on
the youth song, Isabel Young, and cantor and congregational singing leader, Kate Potter
Barrow. A very special debt of gratitude goes to Ann Lamar-Heide who teaches so many of our young violinists and
helps them to participate in and enhance our worship at HCLC. Your music touched us deeply, making us all experi-
ence the moving and "soul- full" reality of sighs too deep for words.
A warm thank you to the team who brought our Lenten workshop activities to life! Thanks to Shannon Porcaro,
Amy Adelsen, Kerry Perkins, Lisa Lequia and all those who hosted a table. Also, thanks to our Celebrations
and Gatherings Team for the delicious, thoughtful snacks! How fun it was to celebrate and create together as a
church family!
Can you imagine what is like to be a disaster victim and have only a quilt, given to you by Lutheran
World Relief? Disaster victims are so grateful for them and use them for warmth and shelter. Our
quilters will be meeting on Tuesday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 23 at 1:15 in the Mark Hurn room to
work on quilts for LWR. You do not have to have any prior quilting experience to be able to help and we
would love to have more people join us. We are usually finished about 2:30. Come meet the friendly group and
learn what we do! We are grateful for donations of material pieces, king, queen or full size, flat sheets, but please,
no twin size sheets. (We use them as backings for the quilts and cannot use the twin size.) Questions? Please call
Anne Dudycha, 681-8030.
You may notice there is not a list of requested items in the Chalice this month. Instead we have
an Easter tree in the narthex. The tree is decorated with paper eggs. Each egg has a food item
written on it. Please choose an egg (or several of them!), purchase the items and bring them and
the paper eggs back to the church and place them under the tree. With your help we can empty
our Easter tree while we fill the pantry cupboards! (Please remember to return the paper eggs so
we can use them again next year.)
Last year we gave out hams at Easter. Because it was so well received, we are planning to do it again and make it a
new tradition. The Racine County Food Bank is giving us 21 hams, so we have a good start towards reaching our
goal of 80 hams., but we will need your help! You can donate money towards the purchase of hams (please mark
the envelope “Easter hams” or watch for hams to go on sale and purchase one to donate. Please bring donated hams
to the church when the office is open so we can get them into the refrigerator right away. We will need many
different size hams for different size families.
Thank you to all who contribute to or volunteer at the food pantry. We could not continue this ministry without you!
Looking for a good soup recipe to bring to a soup supper, or for a tasty, warm meal on these
cold winter nights? Why not get a copy of Feeding the Flock, the HCLC soup cookbook? There
are nearly 100 recipes included so you are sure to find some you and your family love. Creating an
HCLC soup cookbook was a dream of Jacque Nielsen’s and she began collecting recipes years
ago. Sadly, Jacque did not get to see this project completed. The Celebrations and Gathering Team
took those recipes, added more and dedicated the finished product to Jacque. Each cookbook costs
just $7.00 and is available at the Scrip table on Sunday morning, in the church office during the
week and at our soup suppers on Wednesdays during Lent. Get yours before they are all gone!

Help Wanted
Property Chairperson Are you good
at fixing things? Are you handy around
the house? If so, we are in need of your
skills as property chair. You don’t need
to do the work yourself, but do need to be good at
organizing volunteers to help. The property chair also
serves on church council, but is not required to do so.
New Church Directory Lead We are in need of a
volunteer to lead and organize our new church
directory. This person would be our contact person for
LifeTouch, the company who did our last directory.
Minimal work involved and only for a short period of
time.
If you are interested in either of these positions, please
contact Gregg Albright at 989-6432 or at
Easter Breakfast, Sunday, April 21st

to enjoy fellowship and a delicious breakfast in the
Mark Hurn room. We will be serving from 7:30 to 10:15.
There is no charge for breakfast, but we will be
accepting a free-will offering.
Please consider donating an egg dish or a baked good for Easter breakfast. We will
also need volunteers to help keep the tables stocked with goodies and the dishes
cleared. If you can spare and hour to help or can bring an egg dish or baked goods,
please sign up on the board in the lounge, call the office or email
Offering Envelopes
If you donate to HCLC through electronic giving and
are no longer using any of the weekly envelopes your

"News of the World" by Paulette Jiles is the next selection for the Book Group to
discuss on Wednesday, May 15 at 10:00 in the lounge. In the wake of the Civil War,
retired army captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels northern Texas giving live readings to
paying audiences hungry for news of the world. He is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver
a young orphan -- raised by the Kiowa raiders who killed her family -- to relatives she
doesn't remember. The reunion is neither happy nor welcome. Kidd, a respectable elderly man, faces a
terrible choice of whether to abandon the girl to her fate or to become, in the eyes of the law, a kidnapper
himself. All are welcome to join our discussion!
Join us for a… Night at the Theater
All are invited to join us as we venture out to the Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson on Thursday, May 16th, for an evening performance of Menopause The Musical (and please don’t let the title scare you away )!

See what audiences worldwide have been laughing about for over 16 years! Nearly 11 million people in 13 countries (more than 350 cities) have enjoyed this unique theatre experience. And Men love it too! Men in the audience can relate and understand this time in the lives of their wives, sisters or mothers. Winner of multiple awards around the world, Menopause The Musical, is a theatrical experience not to be missed! It truly will be a fun-filled, entertaining and delightful evening for us to come together in fellowship. We’re hoping that you’ll be able to join us and here are the details:

Hospital Visitation
Please remember to contact the church office if you or a family mem-
ber is hospitalized or in a nursing home. Due to HIPPA privacy
laws medical facilities cannot release information on their pa-
tients, so the church will not know you have been ill. You can
decide if you wish to receive a visit or have your name on the prayer
list read in church or in the Chalice.
If you or a family member becomes homebound, we would also like
to know. If you wish, you can request visits and we will add your/
their name to the mailing list for the newsletters and the
wonderful holiday cards from our Sunday School students.
