Message from Mr.Anand Rao The year 2015 -16 has been a very good year for the microfinance industry. The industry (largely the NBFCMFIs) grew their asset book by 84%. Eight NBFC -MFIs were granted provisional in principal Small Finance Bank (SFB) licenses. Two of the MFIs which got the provisional SFB licenses had very successful IPOs. Bandhan Bank, another MFI which became a universal bank last year has had a good start as a bank. Today, the industry is being perceived as catering to a large un- tapped market, as being well regulated and having good governance standards. With higher expectations, have also come challenges, which the industry has to over- come in the coming years. One, with year on year of rap- id growth, growing responsibly, which is to ensure that over lending to borrowers, which the sector has seen be- fore, does not repeat. Today, MFIs use a credit bureau to check borrowers credit history. However, this needs to be strengthened by improving data accuracy by moving towards Aadhaar authentication and getting all players operating in the space (NBFC -MFIs, NBFCs, banks and NGOs) to operate on agreed common rules of borrower over indebtedness. Another challenge for the sector is to broaden its lending approach, which is today primarily Joint Liability Group unsecured lending to women bor- rowers, if the sector wants to meet the broader financial needs of low income households. At Chaitanya, we are also fine tuning our strategy based on the larger challenges of the industry. We continue to focus on rural markets where the intensity of competition is less compared to urban and semi urban areas. We have also expanded geographically into Maharashtra and ac- tively looking to expand this year into North India. We are moving in the direction of being a multi -Product Company with our operating holding company getting a NBFC license this year. Internally, we are focusing on building the skills for sourcing and underwriting secured loans. Today, our secured loan book has two products – 2 wheeler loans and micro housing loans. Our 2 wheeler loan book is in 6% of our loan book and micro housing is 2.5% of our loan book. By the end of this financial year, 2 wheeler and micro housing should each be around 9% of our loan book. In addition to these two secured loan products, we would also be starting micro enterprise loans this year. Being a double bottom line company, making a positive impact in the communities we work in is very important to us. Our community activities focus on three main ob- jectives. One, any activity we take should have an out- reach comparable to our microfinance outreach. Two, is to focus on improving the economic well being of people. Three, pursue activities which are part of a larger national agenda. Some of the CSR activities we have focused on in last quarter have been: livestock health camps; finan- cial literacy programs and skills development programs. Message from Mr.Anand Rao

The year 2015 -16 has been a very good year for the

microfinance industry. The industry (largely the NBFCMFI’s) grew their asset book by 84%. Eight NBFC-MFIs were granted provisional in principal Small Finance Bank (SFB) licenses. Two of the MFIs which got the provisional SFB licenses had very successful IPOs. Bandhan Bank, another MFI which became a universal bank last year has had a good start as a bank. Today, the industry is being perceived as catering to a large un-tapped market, as being well regulated and having good governance standards. With higher expectations, have also come challenges, which the industry has to over-come in the coming years. One, with year on year of rap-id growth, growing responsibly, which is to ensure that over lending to borrowers, which the sector has seen be-fore, does not repeat. Today, MFIs use a credit bureau to check borrower’s credit history. However, this needs to be strengthened by improving data accuracy by moving towards Aadhaar authentication and getting all players operating in the space (NBFC -MFIs, NBFC’s, banks and NGO’s) to operate on agreed common rules of borrower over indebtedness. Another challenge for the sector is to broaden its lending approach, which is today primarily Joint Liability Group unsecured lending to women bor-rowers, if the sector wants to meet the broader financial needs of low income households. At Chaitanya, we are also fine tuning our strategy based on the larger challenges of the industry. We continue to focus on rural markets where the intensity of competition is less compared to urban and semi urban areas.
