A Study on Motivational Level of Youth towardsEntrepreneurship in Tamil Nadu

Hari Krishnan.RDepartment of Mechanical Engineering

Thiagarajar College of EngineeringMadurai.

[email protected].

The days are gone where parents expecttheir children to work under the roof ofGovernment. With Entrepreneurs booming theindustry in almost all the sectors encompassingretail, manufacturing and Informationtechnology, the advent of first generationentrepreneurs have become more predominant.Furthermore, Innovations in every industry arethe crux for its sustenance. This is where theEngineers shoulder the responsibility ofInnovating and managing their own innovationto market viable products and becomesuccessful entrepreneurs.

“No risk is big if the entrepreneur has theintuitiveness and the intensity of effort tosucceed whatever the market conditions are”says the Vice-chairman of Cognizant Mr.Lakshmi Narayanan. Thus the study on theirmotivational level becomes vital.

This case study done on the engineerslead to an interesting conclusion. Here 71respondents from different background wereselected and their response was got in a 5 pointLikert scale.

The initial hurdle to be climbed in anyissue is the willingness to do that thing. Herethe willingness of the target people to becomean entrepreneur along with theirEntrepreneurship coefficient was analyzed.80% of the girls have a positive coefficient/attitude towards entrepreneurship, but a huge65 % of these girls go back when it comes towillingness to take entrepreneurship as a career. On the boys front, 60% have a positivecoefficient/attitude towards entrepreneurship, but only 15% among these boys go back whenit comes to taking this as their career. This clearlygives the picture; girls are much motivatedtowards doing entrepreneurship but given topractical conditions it’s the boys who come out.The societal situation of the girls proved to bethe main reason for this behavior.

The next step after the willingness andmotivation is, getting accustomed to the practicalambience of the market and entrepreneurship. This is what sustains the motivation/ fire builtinside. This was dealt with as the awarenessfactor. Boys had a coefficient of -0.04 and girlswith -0.23 in a scale of -1 to 1. These negative

coefficients suggest that the high level ofmotivation struggles to go to the next step ofmaterializing due to poor awareness of the youthof the Entrepreneurial environment.

Beyond awareness, some other vitalfactors affecting the Engineers’ turning out toEntrepreneurs were found to be

The Initial investment,

Self Confidence and Risk taking ability,

Stress and Time Management,

Business Mind and the motive for socialcause.

The initial investment is a concern; thisgot an Acceptance Level of 76.6% from therespondents. This interpreted the lack ofawareness of current financial assistance by thegovernment, Incubation centers, and the venturecapitalists. Also lacks of practical ideascontribute significantly to this concern. Therewas a 78.2% AL* for the statement that “I willbe rewarded once I take risk”. This shows highself confidence, owing to the considerable highmotivational level. But the 60.2% AL from thesame people for the statement “On choosing tobe an Entrepreneur I have a fear of failure”, (asfailures would de-motivate them) shows thatpeople step back from taking risk despite goodself confidence.

An ample 63% AL* was found amongthe respondents for the statement meaning“Entrepreneurs have a stressed life and a toughtime in managing their time”. This indicates thecurrent youth are prone to stress and areinadequate to manage the stress due to poorTime Manageing skills. An astounding 80% AL

was found among the Engineers favoring thestatement “I takeup entrepreneurship for asocial cause/Social Motive, Eg. Providingemployment to people through their company”.

Suggestions based on the study to improvethe Entrepreneurial potent among the targetgroup:

Setting E-Cells and conducting variousB-Plan competitions.

Organizing stress management competitions/workshops, educating the youth onproper time management methods.

Concentrating more on the women toincrease and bring out theirentrepreneurial talents.

Incubation centers sponsored bygovernment at district levels.

Steps taken by our college:

The study groups at the ThiagarajarCollege of Engineering have implemented theEntrepreneurship Development Forum whichconducts Business Plan contests and alliedcompetitions. It has considerably helped indeveloping the awareness of the students onentrepreneurship.

An Innovation club ‘Students Club forAugmenting Innovation’ under the NationalInnovation Foundation has been implementedand the innovations are being scouted and giventhe suitable platform to showcase it.

On a conclusive note, the motivation andthe attitude of the engineering youth in TamilNadu is up to the mark, but the lack of practicalknowledge and the cognition of real world issuesalong with the fear of failure and stress preventthem from becoming Entrepreneurs andsustaining in the field.

TECH FEST’10 at Jeppiaar Engineering College

Pujeri, VicePrincipal KGISL Institute of Technology, Ms.Saranya Damodaran, CEO, TechnocratSolutions.

Dr.K.Porkumaran,Vice Principal/BranchCounselor – Dr.NGPIT IEEE introduced thepanel members and then highlighted theimportance of the theme and pointed out thefour major phases in engineering education Viz.,Knowledge, Skill, Employability and Competency.

Prof. Ramalatha Marimuthu initiated thatstudents lack in imagination in the currentscenario. Only creativity leads to innovations.A forum of such kind should be created forstudents to make them employable.

Prof. K. Jayaraman added that theindustry look for adaptable engineers who enrichthemselves with the capability of learning. Heinsisted that the technology gap between theInstitution & Industry should be filled toenlighten employability & competency can beachieved only when knowledge and skills areapplied.

Dr. N. Murugananth differentiated thedefinitions of Engineering & Technology byquoting Aristotle. He suggested that learningengineering flaws will help in innovations thanmemorizing engineering laws by relating withEdison’s experiment in inventing incandescentbulb.

Dr. R.V. Pujeri stated that the industrykeenly observes the attitude of students whenthey are interviewed.

Ms. Saranya Damodaran shared thatquantity hardly makes any resource valuableand a disparity exists in today’s engineeringeducation.

Dr. K. Porkumaran concluded that theintellectual ability of students should be

triggered in the right sense to confer futurechallenges.

A forum has been created in whichacademicians & resource persons share theirviews on the topic through e-mail.

The outcomes of the discussion were

It was observed that today’s EngineeringEducation is highly focused on theoreticalconcepts than insisting upon thepractical applications.

The students should in cultivatecreativity and innovations.

They should develop listening, analyzing, synthesizing and applying skills.

Faculty should train the students tobecome adaptable to the industrialrequirements.

The challenges our system of educationlies in interfacing the students with theindustry.
