Global trade in rice is around 30 milion tonnes yearly as against 110 million tonnes for wheat.

As per the latest global rice price index brought out by the FAO, against the estimated level

of 137 in 2007, during the first five months (January-May, 2008), the index has moved to 234,

showing an increase of 81 per cent.

In case of wheat, wheat price index has moved from 216 in 2007 to 371 during the first four

months of 2008, thus showing an increase of 126 per cent.

Tightness in the world rice market stems from the imposition of export curbs by major rice

exporting countries, including India, as part of packages launched to tame domestic food inflation.
