Two of the most foundational experiences of Jewish memory are commemorated in the Spring: Passover, our redemption from slavery, and Shavuot, revelation of Torah. According to traditional Jewish practice, we link one event to the other through the ritual of Counting the Omer. Beginning on the second night of Passover, and continuing up to Shavuot, we count “a measure” each day such that at the end of seven weeks of seven days we have arrived (spiritually at least) at Mt. Sinai. Expanding on this tradition, it has become custom to undertake a period of study during this time (typically the six chapters of Pirkei Avot) so that we are better prepared to receive and understand Torah. Inspired by this custom, I want to invite each of you to join me in a period of study and reflection during the period of the Omer – study and reflection with a unique Charleston twist. Two weeks after Shavuot, Charleston will mark the second anniversary of the tragic massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church. The first year after that horrific event was devoted to healing, and of course the healing continues. Yet as we approach the passing of a second year, healing demands that we better understand the context and roots of what took place. Following the shooting, a number of academics from around the country contributed what they considered to be the best books, articles, documentaries, novels, poetry, etc. to help provide that context. The result was a lengthy and invaluable document called Charleston Syllabus. Three scholars have since sifted through the substantial material, pulling together brief excerpts of primary and secondary sources, and produced a reader by the same name. As the editors of the book write: Certain narratives began to coalesce in the immediate aftermath of the massacre that revealed a widespread lack of historical understanding and willingness to engage with the substance of what took place in Charleston. … Politicians praised the willingness of the victims’ families to forgive Dylann Roof, using their actions to convey the message that the nation as a whole must also move on from its troubled racial past. This was offered as the basis for a renewed “conversation” about race in America. The Charleston massacre, however, revealed the need for a different conversation, one that as historians we knew had to be grounded in an honest appraisal of the past. Dylann Roof was not an anomaly but, in fact, a product of American history, a history shaped by a legacy of white supremacist thought dating back to the founding of the country. … Talk of forgiveness could not be understood without knowledge of the history of African American religion and the specific role of the black church as a site of both salvation and resistance. Rabbi Alexander’s article continued: So this is the conversation – a different conversation – I invite you to join: • We’ll meet for five Thursdays between Passover and Shavuot, in our Social Hall. April 13,* 20, May 4, 11, 18 from 12:00 – 1:00. • Come for all or just one, as your schedule permits. • Bring a brown bag lunch, if you choose (*kosher for Passover on April 13, please). • Charleston Syllabus: Readings on Race, Racism and Racial Violence (eds. Chad Williams, Kidada

E. Williams, and Keisha N. Blain) will be our text, and I’ll choose a few short readings to focus our conversation each week. You may choose to purchase the book, or we’ll make copies of the selections available in advance of each discussion.

The period of the Omer has been described as a time of both mourning and blessing. We have mourned, and will continue to mourn, as a Charleston community. May the growth in understanding we seek to find through dialogue and reflection prove to be a blessing. L’shalom,

Rabbi Stephanie M. Alexander

President’s Message Ben Glass

What will your legacy be? For some, it is stories of a life well lived and acts of service and kindness, carried in the memories of others. For some it is personality traits and values passed down to children and grandchildren. For some it is a business, or a building, or a cause that carries on long after they are gone. It is a question that occupies many of us at one point or another in our lives, and as I approach the end of my term as President of this historic Congregation, I will confess the question has crossed my mind a time or two.

In the end, I hope I am remembered as a catalyst for change. I hope that I am seen as someone who sounded the call and set our Congregation on the path to changing how we think about our synagogue, our community, and our responsibilities. I hope my legacy is that I helped convince a community that continuing to do things the way we have always done them is simply not good enough to ensure the survival and ascendancy of our Congregation.

This weekend, we have the opportunity to recognize and honor a number of those in our community who have already left a lasting legacy at KKBE. Friday night, April 7, following services, friends will sponsor a special oneg to bid a fond farewell to the Chavin family, as they move to Cleveland, Ohio and no doubt find another community to positively impact. Aside from being dear friends to many in our Congregation, the Chavin’s have been role models of the best sort. They have supported KKBE with both the sweat of their brows and the power of their pocketbook. Ken and Nadine have been Mitzvah Members at the highest levels and were substantial benefactors in our last capital campaign. They have been Officers on our Board of Trustees, President of Sisterhood, and indefatigable volunteers in our gift shop, our Religious School, and our committees. Their daughters, Sammy, Lexi, and Lani have all been deeply involved in our youth group, CHARLEY, and in the larger NFTY movement, as members, officers, and CHARLEY Presidents.

On Saturday, April 8, we will have a special Havdalah service and reception to recognize and honor our newest additions to the Society of 1749. Established in 2008, the Society of 1749 is composed of those members who have had the passion and foresight to create a place for KKBE in their estate planning documents. Begun by a few founding members, its numbers have now grown to nearly fifty members who have let KKBE know that it has a place not only in their hearts, but in their wills or other long-term financial plans. It is only through this sort of legacy giving that we can hope to build the level of endowed funds we know we will need to support our thriving operations in the future.

We will also be marking a very special milestone on Saturday evening. Ten years ago, Steve and Julie Ziff established the Stephen, Julie and Danielle Ziff Youth Fund to assure that KKBE’s youth would be dipped in creative and extraordinary Jewish experiences that our normal operating funds could not supply. Over the last ten years, the revenues generated by this million dollar gift has provided hundreds of our youth with an opportunity to attend Jewish summer camps, NFTY kallot and conventions, and confirmation trips to New York City and Washington, D.C. to build a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Jewish culture and values. Ziff Fund monies have enabled us to try new things, bring extraordinary performers into our community, and provide experiences to our youth that simply are not available in most congregations. They have created a legacy that has positively impacted one generation of our children already, and will continue to positively impact generations of Jewish children to come.

There are many among us who have already begun to construct their legacy at KKBE, and who continue to add to that legacy with each passing year. We must celebrate them and learn from their example. I hope you will join me Friday and Saturday to recognize and celebrate these generous visionaries who have woven themselves into the tapestry of KKBE and, by their actions, made it something more. And I hope you will use the occasion as an opportunity to consider the place KKBE holds in your heart and to ask yourself, what will your legacy be? B’Shalom,

Ben is an outstanding young man. He has so much compassion for others and is always one of the first to volunteer when things are needed to be done.

He truly cares about others. He enjoys acting in theater presentations at school, surfing and gaming with his friends on Xbox. He also has a love of

music and has finally expressed an interest to learn an instrument. Ben likes to spend time with his family going on day trips, summer vacations and our

annual family cruise to the Caribbean. Ben also loves attending Camp Coleman in the summer. Ben’s Mitzvah project was to collect kippah’s and

send them to a school in Israel for special needs children. Ben is a great role model for his younger sister Jordan, who looks up to him. We are so proud of

Ben and look forward to watching him grow and succeed in life. Mazel Tov Ben! We love you!

I had the distinct privilege to host Mark Zuckerberg for Sunday brunch and a tour of KKBE this month. Discretion has been a hallmark of my professional life. Over the course of my career I have worked with rock stars, movie stars, famed Hollywood directors, playwrights, Wall Street moguls, and world renown philanthropists — however, with permission from the team at Facebook, I had the opportunity to share my time with Mark, who is perhaps one of the most remarkable and interesting people I have ever had an opportunity to meet — which is saying something. The weekend kicked off with a private dinner at Nathaniel Russell House on the High Battery, a National Historic Landmark built in 1808 that is considered one of America’s single most important neoclassical dwellings. Former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, and current Mayor John Tecklenburg, clergy, nonprofit leaders in the community and Mark, his hoodie, and his Facebook team all met at this stately home. It was an evening filled with thoughtful dialogue on how people are living, working and thinking about the future across our country. Mark’s challenge for 2017 is to meet and listen to people in all 50 states. I was honored to be a part of this special evening. Sunday, Mark started his day by attending morning services at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He wore a suit. An intimate brunch with a few of our congregants, that I had the pleasure of curating, followed the stop at Mother Emanuel. For brunch the hoodie was back. From there it was a quick walk to KKBE where Mark toured our synagogue and remarkably he then joined the (Star Wars themed) Purim Festival. Turns out his own Bar Mitzvah was Star Wars themed — Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda wore hoodies too you know. B’Shalom,

KKBE Sisterhood, WRJ Sherry Schwimmer , Sisterhood President

In March, Women of Reform Judaism held their Fried Leadership Conference here in Charleston. Six of your Sisterhood members attended the event funded by Sisterhood. They were totally inspired by the speakers and content presented. We attended workshops on Conflict Management and Resolution, Nominating Committees, Purging Your Inner Wonder Woman, Advocacy, Membership, Intergenerational programming, and more. One of the many highlights was Havdalah at KKBE. The women were totally in awe of our Temple. The YES fund is the tzedakah root for WRJ. It stands for Youth, Education and Special Projects. The YES fund trains future leaders of Reform Judaism by providing scholarships for rabbinical and cantorial students, supporting youth and social justice, and strengthening the Movement in Israel and around the world. Your membership in Sisterhood supports this fund. Chosen Treasures, your Sisterhood gift shop, is your vehicle for promoting Judaism within your home and your loved one’s home. We specialize in all your ritual needs for life cycle events. Beautiful items for all your simcha occasions. Items are available locally, without sales tax and enjoy your 10% discount as a Sisterhood member. The slate for officers will be voted on at the Sisterhood Seder. We hope to see you there.

KKBE Brotherhood Martin Hoxenhorn, President By the time this reaches publication two major Brotherhood events will have passed. The first being our Safety Seminar. We had over 60 people in attendance. The program was based on an audit from Charleston Police, SWAT, and the Anti Terrorism Squad on how KKBE should take measures in case there is any kind of violent activities on our property. Thanks to everybody who was involved to help make this a safer place to be, especially our security guard Mike Lyczany. The next event was a joint effort between Adult Learning and Brotherhood. First, we enjoyed a sit down dinner of Chinese food. Then we had a very successful presentation from the Post & Courier Food Editor and James Beard Nominee, Hanna Raskin, on the topic “ Identity Takeout: How Jews Made Chinese Food Their Ethnic Cuisine.“ Attendance was close to 100 people. Thank you to everyone who attended. This was one of the most successful events we have had to date. Upcoming: Second Seder at KKBE on April 11th at 6 p.m. Seder service conducted by Rabbi Kanter. The menu will consist of matzah ball soup, homemade chop liver, brisket, potatoes, candied carrots, fresh greens, sweet noodle kugel, cole slaw with cranberries and nuts, and tabouli . Dessert will be macaroons, cake, and coffee. Vegetarian plates will be available upon request. We will have all the fixings for a seder plate on each table, but if you could bring your own seder plate then we will dress it and it will add to the festivities. Kosher wine will be served. White grape juice will be available. RSVP by Tuesday April 3 at conta.cc/2mvYWV5. Member prices are: adults $35; children, 6-12 years, $15; non-members: adults $45; children, 6 - 12 years, $20. Free for children 5 and under. Tickets are going fast! Reserve your spot now.

KKBE!

April 2017 ChaiLights Nisan—Iyyar 5777 Page 12

I would like to say thank you to all the volunteers, participants, and guests that made the Purim Carnival a huge success. It was such a joy to see our communi-ty come together for such a fun and meaningful event. The carnival is set up as a fundraiser for Camp Jenny. The URJ explains the camp as, “NFTY’s Southern Area and Southern Tropical Region’s mitzvah corps project, giving children from inner-city Atlanta the opportunity to receive the love of big “brothers and sisters,” three nutritious meals a day, and encouragement for the future. They also enjoy activities such as hiking in the mountains, water play, ziplining, arts and crafts, and a variety of sports and team building activities. The camp is held at URJ Camp Coleman every Memorial Day weekend.” This year we raised money for Camp Jenny. Again, the success of this event would not have been possible without the support of our community. Safety and security procedures have been updated for religious school. Staff will be reviewing fire drill procedures with students. All staff will be wearing badges. Parents and other adults visiting or volunteering during religious school hours will need to wear a visitor sticker. No adults are permitted in the classroom areas or in the sanctuary during class time without proper identification. Cooperation in ensuring all security measures are followed is greatly appreciated. Please join us on Sunday, April 2

nd 12:45-2:45 PM in the Social Hall for our BINGO and Silent Auc-

tion Fundraiser. All proceeds go to our religious school. No entrance or game fees are charged for playing. Donations are greatly appreciated! The Sisterhood has been collecting prizes for BINGO winners. Concessions will be available for purchase and amazing silent auction items will be up for bid. Items include theme baskets, Panther game tickets, Folly Beach getaways, River Dogs Family Pack, Children’s Museum passes, a walking tour of Asheville, a variety of gift certificates, and more!!! Space is limited for BINGO. You can guarantee a spot by signing up here: https://goo.gl/forms/29Kcqnts1CAQ3v0P2 Donations are appreciated. You do not need to pay to play. $5 per person is the suggested donation. You can donate by clicking here http://bit.ly/2nH5ROX or by sending a check to KKBE. I look forward to seeing you on April 2

for all the holiday foods. This is a wonderful bonding time with the kids to teach

them Passover cooking skills.

Happy Reading,
